## **Structure, governance and management:**
The Back Home Project is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation, registered as a charity on 1st December 2020. We are run by a board of trustees that meet on a monthly basis.
We employ a teacher, and a teaching assistant that deliver lessons in Nigeria through the Otukpo Tech Academy. Teacher training and additional ad hoc (direct to students training) is provided by the trustees and volunteers based in the UK remotely.
## **Aims and Objectives:**
The Back Home Project provides free IT training to young adults in Nigeria, enabling the next generation to drive their own future.
We do this by running free, in person, IT courses. We teach a programming language and the skills necessary to get a job in the IT industry. To add some context, unemployment for young adults is around 42% in Nigeria.
## **Our impact in 2021**
We launched right at the end of 2020 right in the middle of the Covid pandemic which required us to be flexible and creative in our activities and plans. Over the course of 2021 we:
- Ran four “Introduction to coding” courses. Each course was a week long and 30 students (aged between 18 and 29) were trained on how to build basic websites using html, css and javascript. Feedback we received included: “It’s a dream fulfilled for me to know how to create a website”
- Ran a coding bootcamp (10 Weeks): We trained 18 students on the skills necessary to get a job as a web developer. 16 students completed the course which ended with an intense 72 hour hackathon. Since the course finished 3 students have gone on to university and one student is self-employed building websites.
- We recruited and trained a teacher in Nigeria
- We acquired and deployed 11 computers, 2 projectors and other teaching resources to Nigeria
- Established ourselves in Otukpo: The teaching venue we used was donated by a local hotel, and we established connections with local community leaders (School Principal, Pastor) who supported our courses
All our courses were completely free and held in person. We also provided free lunches for all the participants.
## **Our goals for 2022:**
- Fundraise through grants
- Run 2 coding bootcamps
- Deliver vocation skills workshops (Such as CV writing, Presentation skills)
- Resolve issues we faced with intermittent power supply in Nigeria
## **Public benefit statement**
The charity continues to provide free IT training that enables individuals to generate a sustainable income and be self-sufficient.
