Chairs Report

More than 100 serious knife crimes are committed weekly in Yorkshire and northern Lincolnshire. Offences including robbery, assault and murder have nearly doubled in the region in the past decade, according to the latest police data. A total of 5,257 serious offences involving a blade were recorded by forces in Yorkshire and northern Lincolnshire in the year up to June 2022. The figure is a 12% rise in the previous 12 months and up 90% from 2012.

We are practitioners and activist community groups, and this breadth of experience forms the core of our strategy. Our focus is on the transformative potential of education and raising awareness about the hazards to children as young as ten of an expansive informal economy of drugs where their journey to a life of crime begins as couriers for county lines.

At Mums United, we specialise in helping the most vulnerable young people, women, and groups in Sheffield against rising youth violence and child drug exploitation. Our interventions are twofold: We regularly run community activities for young people, for example, boxing and multi-sports sessions and creative writing in the written word.

I want to thank our young people and mothers for supporting us unconditionally and allowing us to spread our message to the broader community. I want to thank our funders and everyone who donated to our cause.

We also design tailored workshops for young people excluded from the mainstream, including from school. Our focus is on the transformative potential of education and raising awareness about the hazards to children as young as ten of a growing informal economy of drugs where their journey to a life of crime begins as couriers for county lines.

The world we live in forces change on us all. Mums United reflects the strength of different cultures, religions and social classes, our diversity is our strength but this strength only comes by challenging traditional models of power. We are dedicated to changing the dominant narrative about who in our local communities is best placed to make meaningful change in our lives.

This year we have reached over 300 young people. We now have two staff members and ten volunteers. We aim to increase capacity and give more ownership to the young people to co-design workshops. Taking ownership of workshops has empowered young people and increased their desire to do more within the community.

I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples. We aim to create a meaningful full, lasting impact.

Never give up hope -success will be found in the journey of our struggles.

We want to empower our young generation and have their voices be heard, which are often lost by the adults’ who know best’. In essence, we are here to protect and serve them in their journey. Their voices must be heard and recognised.

One of our greatest achievements have been creating a safe place for young people and mothers to attend – the clubs have been a perfect place for the young people to come and learn, express themselves and grow

Here is some of the work that has been carried out at the clubs

Meals & More

Healthy Activities & Food

Sheffield City Council has funded activities specifically for families on free school meals, promoting healthy eating and well-being.

Mums United have partnered with Meals & More to deliver much needed activities and food to two clubs - MUSYC at Wicker and Meersbrook

Activities were carried out in December

2021 holidays, Easter Holiday and Summer Holidays. Over 300 young people have been supported.

We have had a fantastic turnout over the Summer holidays and the October holidays we have supported over 147 young people and provided 2472 meals to young people.

We have varied the number of activities this year, these have included:

Confidence In Me – We have learnt about the importance of fitness and healthy eating.

Strength In Me – We have focused on building resilience through self-defence.

Art-ivate – We have used expression of art as a medium of self-discovery and learning to express yourself creatively.

Ani-Mates: Learn About Stop Motion

Animation – Learning the technical craft of creating short stories through animation. The young people talked about emotion and

used a wide variety of materials to create a story and learned through play. They worked together in small groups or on their own to produce animations.

Recycling Art Workshop – Young people have learnt about the importance of recycling and the impact it has on the environment.

Learning About First Aid – Professionals taught young people invaluable life skills, helping them to be more risk aware and equip them with skills to help themselves and others.

Building Resilience Through Sport

We used multi -sport sessions and boxing to engage with young people, we focused on resilience by talking about identity, improve their sense of control and self esteem.

Protest Against The National Borders Bill

Young people at the club made cards and placards for the protest gainst the National borders bill, we raised awareness on what was taking place and ensured the young people understood its implications.

This protest was against a bill that is racist - It is reflective of this government’s systematic failure of fostering a hostile environment - We must stand together in solidarity.

Under the Nationality and Borders Bill, which is being debated in the House of Lords. If the British government wants to remove someone’s citizenship it will no longer need to tell them. Home Secretary Priti Patel has stated that the law would be used in “exceptional circumstances” on people who pose the most risk to the UK.

Protests have been taking place against the plans - some fear that ethnic minorities could be treated differently to white Britons for committing the same crime. Campaign against the borders bill, mums united trustees spoke about the dangers of the bill

4th Infantry In Meadowhall

Educational Workshops

Workshops focused on young people who are We took young people to visit the infantry who at the risk of exclusion or have been receiving were demonstrating how to administer CPR a high number of detentions. We focused on English and Maths

The facilitators stated:

‘The difference I have seen from week one to now is so significant – they are listening / engaging / having fun and that’s what learning should be about - why are they being so positive? It’s because the tutors are spending quality one to one time with them and are actually hearing them.’

South Yorkshire Legal Service

The club was invited by the The High Sheriff to his Legal Service on 20 March 2022. Martn Macvery wrote :

‘….I have during my time in office had the privilege of getting to know you all, and seeing first hand all of the tremendous work you all do with and for young people right across South Yorkshire. Your work is so special, important and valuable.

I want young people to have a presence and to be a big part of the South Yorkshire Legal Service. I know that many young people will not be aware of the Legal Service and many will never have been to Sheffield Cathedral. I want to try and do something about that.’

Who Am I Online

Workshops were run by Sheffield City Council at the clubs highlighting the dominant force of social media, we created a safe space to talk opening and anonymously about what they are experiencing. Ruth from Sheffield City Council worked with the young people and mothers separately discussing the impact of social media and the impact it has on our self . Each group have spoken honestly and openly about their vulnerabilities about being exploited and what can be done to keep our young people safe

Building Resilience After Trauma

Workshops Preparing For The Platinum Jubilee Event

We have run workshops for women who have suffered from gender-based violence, namely Domestic Violence by raising awareness and building confidence in women who have low self-esteem through workshops and multisport activities

Young people spent time at the allotments learning about their environment, wildlife, building resilience, raising awareness. This project was amazing as it gave young people ownership and encouraged confidence in seeing a project develop and grow. The young people planted seeds, ensured they took care of their allocated spaces.

We held a series of workshops preparing for our community event celebrating the Queens Platinum Jubilee, the young people created art to display at the event, painted potraits of the Queen.

MMAP workshop/Knife crime victim support founder Quinton Milise came to Sheffield and worked with the youth club on written word poetry, the young people and mothers wrote about how their culture and the monarchy has impacted their communities.

Preparing For Pride, Gypsy Roma Travellers History Month

Islamic Perspective

The young people wanted a series of workshops that focused on healthy relationships and how strength can derive from religion when young people are to the gang culture. These workshops are also an opportunity for non -Muslims to understand the religion of Islam and how there are similarities and differences between different faiths.

Young people learnt about the history of the Roma community and created art work for the event, the sessions were significant as they enabled young people to learn about the Roma community.

Remembering Queen Elizabeth II

The young people wrote cards and drew pictures remembering the late Queen, the letters and cards were sent to the Palace.

Lighting Of SculptureCelebratory Burn

The club joined Chatsworth House to build lanterns for the ceremony, and the young people went to the ceremony and enjoyed the great sculptures that has been built.

IGNITE - Lantern Making

Ignite came to the clubs and worked with the young people to make jar candles.

Root Causes

The young people have been focusing on exploring the root causes of youth violence by exploring the socio ecological model of youth violence.

We have separated the group into three cohorts- boys, girls and mothers, each group will be exploring each of the factors that influence an individuals based on the socio ecological model of youth violence. The purpose is to explore what the views are of each cohort, how are they similar and how are they different, what risk factors have they identified and what are the solutions.

This project is ongoing, below is some of the work that has been completed so far.

Mitzah Day

Seven Hills Shul came to the Youth Club, together with the young people they packed the food that was donated. Over 120 food parcels were distributed to the homeless shelters and to vulnerable families. This was a great opportunity for the young people to understand what Mitzah Day is and speak to the volunteers from Seven hills Shul about their Jewish faith

The clubs have welcomed guests to their safe place, we have had prospective MPs Abtisam Mohamed, Rizwana Lal, Mike Buckley to the clubs, and each candidate has spoken about politics, and why it was important.

We had Akhmed Yakoob visit our clubs, he is a lawyer and inspirational speaker, he spoke to the clubs about the impact and consequences of the gang culture and really inspired the young people

All our activities appeared to have a significant influence on the users of our services, as one of them answered on our feedback form when we asked her about the service;

Indeed, before summarising our input and services to communities and families, we would like to thank our donors and volunteers. Thank you to everyone who has donated to the charitable bank. We have included the names of everyone who has donated. Some have wanted to remain anonymous. A special acknowledgement goes to those who want to stay anonymous.

This is what we are aiming for, to improve the social cohesion and strengthen the fabric of Sheffield and its sense of humanity and solidarity for others who need help.

Helping others and devoting my time to this organisation gave me a sense of pride. I now know that I can accomplish a broad spectrum of tasks. Working for Mums United has given me a positive outlook on life. While doing so, I met numerous people, whether they were clients, co-workers, or volunteers. I learned how to share similar interests with others, which created friendships. I have learned my strengths and weaknesses along with how to overcome failure. I started volunteering at Earl Marshall by dropping off food from CO-OP every Tuesday. My volunteering experience allowed me to experience the environment and face situations I otherwise would not. It opened my eyes to the harsh reality and lifestyle that many individuals in our society face today. It has helped me understand the importance of giving. Helping is the most powerful way to show love and affection for others. Being there for someone going through a hard time means more than anything for that person.

We want to thank Penny Appeal and Coop, who, without their help and support we could not serve the communities.

Mums United charitable bank is also proud to be part of the religious celebration of all faiths. Our activities and engagement have a tremendously positive influence on our communities understanding of each other’s culture and respect for each other faith and religious practices.

The Charitable Bank serves the community of Iraqi, Afghani Slovakian, Yemeni, Syrian, English, Somali, Bulgarian, Sudan, Pakistani and Somalia.

From zahira’s words, we can see the future of the bank blossoming by not only giving food, advocacy, help, support, completing forms, listing, and teaching others, but also we see ourselves as part of the community of green where we help people recycle their unwanted materials and help mainstream market make better use of the food that they thought it would be wasted.

In addition, we are proud to help Earl Marshal shelter and the vulnerable people with weekly food donation to ensure they receive the nutrition and warm food. Mums united service users include low-income/ single parents from both genders, males and females, refugees with disabilities, singles with low incomes, asylum seekers, women surviving domestic violence and young people.

We aim and work hard to be one of our services users stated; “they go above and beyond my expectations”.

We are, as the Trustees of Mums United and Managers of the Charitable Bank very confident that the bank in the coming year will be flourishing with the ongoing support and great engagement of our communities and those who love Sheffield as we do.

The total number of families using our services regularly reached 45 families living in different Sheffield areas.

Unlike many other charities, our Charitable bank believes young people should learn to show solidarity with vulnerable families and individuals and have placed them at the forefront of campaigns to instil ownership and leadership skills.

The Charitable bank has carried out campaigns- organised collecting, supporting and helping Ukraine, Afghani, and Pakistani. Yemini and Syrian refugees in need.

Advocacy

Through Mums United Charitable Bank, we have identified a need for advocacy and support for mothers and their families. Mums United we have a holistic approach. The Charitable Bank has enabled us to see and hear the mothers’ needs and empower them as they try to meet the needs of their children.

As the rising cost of living has impacted so many people the donations from Penny Appeal & Coop have been vital in providing much needed food for the vulnerable

Through donations received from co-op and penny appeal we have been able to support the following number of people

The rising cost of living has marginalised the already marginalised, and as mothers have come to us to speak about their children, they have identified the great for us to see the whole picture. As one mother said; ‘how can I tackle I think about these gang members that come to my child and give them money when I cannot bring food to the table, I have issues with my housing, I cannot speak the language to tell the council that I need help… thank you to Mums United for helping me. I can now focus on what my child is doing and have time to listen to you when you talk about looking for signs if your child is in a gang .’ Through advocacy/signposting, we have helped 125 people.

Palfest Sheffield is a festival of friendship Monsoon rains caused widespread flooding with Palestine Mums united took park in and landslides across Pakistan, affecting Palfest, we facilitated discussion about the millions of people. Power In Me

As the world learnt to adapt and live alongside Covid Mums United continue to provide online services to mothers and young people. We have been running the ‘Power in Me’ workshops every week since 2020 engaging with mothers who are still unable to come to workshops and are vulnerable.

The strength in Power in me lies with the mothers who lead the sessions, we draw strength from each other, from the stories that we narrate to tackle youth violence, we provide a safe space for mothers to speak their truth and narrate their stories from their values and cultural practices. it is through our stories we find the strength and realise that we have the power in us to determine our path and have the strength to tackle the dangers of youth violence, it has made us recognise that youth violence has many different layers and helps us focus on what responsibility do we have as mothers.

Mums United is a constituted by a registered Charity No: - 1192570

Objectives

Mums United is a registered charity which started 4 years ago as a community group. I am pleased to say that we have grown from a group of 6 to 80, targeting areas in Sheffield for outreach, engagement and intervention work that are characterised as the most deprived LSOAs (lower-layer super output areas) by the Government in its Index of Multiple Deprivation. These areas are Burngreave, Spital Hill, Heeley, Netheredge, Sharrow, and Wicker.

Achievements and performance

Our Mission Statement is to listen, engage, act, raise awareness and never give up hope for our members. We provide grassroots solutions to the rise in youth violence, in knife and gun crime and child drug exploitation.For the past three years, our dedicated membership of volunteers and professionals have been campaigning for greater action on rising crime among some young people in some of the most deprived communities in the city of Sheffield. We believe that the solutions to the problems that afflict our communities must come from the communities themselves. Our work has been recognised nationally as we have been recognised as the 1749th “Point of Light” organisation across the UK.

This year alone there have been over 13 stabbings in Sheffield and over 18 shootings. Sheffield has been labelled as one of 21 ‘violence hotspots’.

In order to address this we have been creating positive pathways for young people, mothers whose voice is rarely heard and when is heard no one listens. We need to empower or communities, build strength and resilience from within so that we can ensure our children will grow into healthy ambitious adults

In the past financial year we have continued to raise awareness about the impact of youth violence, we have continued to grow as a charity, we have increased our group membership and have mothers from different cultural diverse backgrounds engaging and participating in our work. It is this diversity that gives us the strength in changing the narratived for our members.

Our impact is illustrated through the projects we have carried out, our process works because we are mothers who have “lived experiences”, our trauma informed approach focus on prevention, we look at the outcomes, which is youth violence but also ensure that the other side of the spectrum is focused on, how young people change their trajectory towards gangs, we ensure protective factors are in place so that the young people know there is a safe place for them to come. Activities delivered include:

•Engaging young people in sport and culture as a means for self-expression to counter the rise in youth violence

•Focusing on the well being, building confidence and resilience of young people

•Creating projects where mothers and young people can engage in safe open dialogue

•Supporting positive change in the wellbeing of young people and adults who are at risk.

•Focusing on the wellbeing of mothers, identifying the trauma and working with mothers to find the power in them to enable change to take place

•The Charitable Bank has brought into focus the poverty that exists and the vulnerabilities of families, how their vulnerabilities are exploited by local gangs. Through the Charitable bank we not only focuses on providing food, we provide clothes and toys to vulnerable families and individuals. It is also a place where young people and mothers can develop their business and administrative skills

We would like to thank our funders : South Yorkshire Foundation , National lottory, Graves Trust, SWC-Scurrah Wainwright Charity, Sharrow Community Forum, Magic grants, Sheffield City Council for funding our projects .

Thank you to all the mothers and the young people who have come to the clubs, local schools who have supported the charitable bank and our projects, our mentors who deliver the workshops.

I would like you to come and join us in 2023 as this is going to be a year where we are looking to expand Mums United to provide a whole range of services that meet an identified need for our members.

Risk Management

The Trustees actively review the major risks, which the charity faces on regular basis and believe that maintaining reserves at current levels, combined with an annual review of the controls over key financial systems, will provide sufficient resources in the events of adverse conditions. The trustees have also examined other operational and business risks faced by the charity and confirm that they have established systems to mitigate the significant risks.

The Trustees’ are required by charity commission to prepare financial statements for each financial year

I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of the above charity (“the Trust”)
for the year ended 30/11/2022.
As the charity trustees of the Trust, you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in
accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (“the Act”).
I report in respect of my examination of the Trust’s accounts carried out under section 145 of
the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination, I have followed the applicable Directions
