Chairs Report

Mums United is a registered charity which started 3 years ago as a community group. I am pleased to say that we have grown from a group of 6 to 80, targeting areas in Sheffield for outreach, engagement and intervention work that are characterised as the most deprived LSOAs (Lower-layer Super Output Areas) by the Government in its Index of Multiple Deprivation. These areas are Burngreave, Spital Hill, Heeley, Netheredge, Sharrow, and Wicker. Our Mission Statement is to listen, engage, act, raise awareness and never give up hope for our members.

We provide grassroots solutions to the rise in youth violence, in knife and gun crime and child drug exploitation. For the past three years, our dedicated membership of volunteers and professionals have been campaigning for greater action on rising crime among some young people in some of the most deprived communities in the city of Sheffield. We believe that the solutions to the problems that afflict our communities must come from the communities themselves. Our work has been recognised nationally as we have been recognised as the 1749th “Point of Light” organisation across the UK.

This year alone there have been over 13 stabbings in Sheffield and over 18 shootings. Sheffield has been labelled as one of 21 ‘violence hotspots’. In order to address this we have been creating positive pathways for young people, mothers whose voice is rarely heard and when is heard no one listens. We need to empower or communities, build strength and resilience from within so that we can ensure our children will grow into healthy ambitious adults.

In the past financial year we have continued to raise awareness about the impact of youth violence, we have continued to grow as a charity, we have increased our group membership and have mothers from different cultural diverse backgrounds engaging and participating in our work. It is this diversity that gives us the strength in changing the narrative.

Our impact is illustrated through the projects we have carried out, our process works because we are mothers who have “lived experiences”, our trauma informed approach focus on prevention, we look at the outcomes, which is youth violence but also ensure that the other side of the spectrum is focused on, how young people change their trajectory towards gangs, we ensure protective factors are in place so that the young people know there is a safe place for them to come. Activities delivered include:

Power in me

As the world learnt to adapt and live alongside Covid Mums United continue to provide online services to mothers and young people. We have been running the ‘Power in Me’ workshops every week since 2020 engaging with mothers who are still unable to come to workshops and are vulnerable. The strength in Power in me lies with the mothers who lead the sessions, we draw strength from each other, from the stories that we narrate to tackle youth violence, we provide a safe space for mothers to speak their truth and narrate their stories from their values and cultural practices. it is through our stories we find the strength and realise that we have the power in us to determine our path and have the strength to tackle the dangers of youth violence, it has made us recognise that youth violence has many different layers and helps us focus on what responsibility do we have as mothers.

Sheffield Wednesday Football community programme

We have continued to work with SWFC at Landsdown, every week engaging with the young people building confidence and resileince

knife and Gun Crime Prevention Training

Following incidents of youth violence in the local area we engaged with the 2020 Dreams to deliver a knife and gun crime prevention training in order to raise awareness regarding county lines, gangs and the importance of community cohesion.

Over 40 community members came online, the session enabled everyone to feel connected and helped gain an insight in the complexities that surround the gang culture

Christmas Appeal for Vulnerable families

At the beginning of the financial year we collaborated with local community organisation to ensure vulnerable children received Christmas presants. We collaborated with Sharrow Community forum and Joy Bank to ensure over 400 presants were distributed to the vulnerable. Local volunteers from the community helped with the distribution

Providing activity packs for the vulnerable

February 2021 -Mums United continued to support low income based families, with basic stationary and craft packs in order ensure the young people would enage and help their well being, ach pack consisted of different activities. Over 200 packs were distributed

Online Games Workshop

February – March 2021

Mums united collaborated with Sheffield Wednesday football club to continue online games workshops. 15 young people would attend the sessions once a week. These workshops proved to be popular with the young people as they engaged in conversations relating to online safety, the dangers of gaming, knife crime. The workshops enabled friends to meet online and play online games safely.

Arabic Classes

In order to build community cohesion we have started Arabic classes, we realised that language barriers with the mothers prevent engagement with each other, by holding classes we were able to take a step towards understanding each other 15 mothers from diverse backgrounds attended the sessions.

Peace in Conflict

March-July 2021

The peace in conflict project took place in Sharrow/Netheredge. This project is a story of two halves, one conflict, two perspectives. We engaged with over 30 young people and 11 mothers, focusing on conflict management, we want to bring two perspectives on youth violence together. We split the project into a series of three workshops. The first workshop was called Empowering the youth with a pen- the purpose of the workshop was to encourage young people to start the creative writing process and understand the power of language and the impact it has. The second workshop focused on mothers, we looked at what conflict is, how conflict can be managed. The purpose of the workshop was to develop mothers perspective on what conflict is and how to manage conflict especially through parenting. The third workshop was the Creative Arts project, through the written word the conflict of youth violence would be addressed Over 25 young people and 14 mothers attended.

Sheffield BAMER Conference

Mums united collaborated with BAMER COVID 19 Action group to organise a conference, we encouraged community members to voice their concerns regarding vaccinations. our guest speakers were professionals in the medical field including the director of public health Greg Fell- over 50 community members joined the live zoom link and ha has been viewed by over 300 people.

Enough is Enough - keeping our communities safe

On May 2021 we organsises a march in protest against gang violence. Over 100 community members attended the protest. This march was mothers standing up to say Enough is Enough. We are providing a voice to those whose voices are not heard. We are standing up against a system that has decimated our youth services.

We are standing up for the victims of youth violence We are standing up against the gangs who are perpetuating hate and apathy towards our children. We are here to say to all those who have been affected by the violence that we are here for them and by standing as one community we can begin to address the problems we are facing with our young people. The march was covered by a number of local media outlets – see Appendices page. The march was documented and uploaded to the Mums United YouTube channel. The first footage shows the protest Link 1. Our Unspoken Truths is created to encourage women to express their stories when they have been subject to different types of violence and exploitation. MUSYC - Mums United Sheffield Youth Club

MUSYC : Sheffield Health Holiday

At the clubs, we have held our Healthy Holiday Activities during the school holidays. These activities have been funded by Sheffield City Council, they are specifically for families who are on free school meals, promoting healthy eating and well being In our workshops we have focused on four areas: Confidence in me - we have learnt about the importance of fitness and healthy eating Strength in me - we have focused on building resilience through self-defence Art-ivate-we have used expression of art as a medium of self-discovery and learning to express yourself in a creative way Ani-Mates - learn about stop motion animation- learning the technical craft of creating short stories through animation. We have engaged with over 40 young people

MUSYC : COVID Station

At the clubs, the workshops were for the young people focusing on how Covid 19 had impacted the on their life and their wellbeing. The purpose of the workshops was to educate and raise awareness. We engaged with over 30 young people

We have been running two clubs in Netheredge and in Meersbrook, due to funding restrictions we have continued to run the club at Meersbrook. The clubs have created a safe place for young people and their mothers, we build resilience, selfesteem and confidence. the clubs consist of interactive workshops that raise awareness about the dangers of gangs, county lines, youth violence.

We have over 30 young people attend our clubs every week. The clubs also carry out physical activities, for example, boxing, archery, selfdefence We ran two clubs in Netheredge and Meersbrook Due to funding we have focused on meersbrook club which continues to run every week The clubs have run our MUSVPP (Mums United Sheffield Violence Prevention proramme) where we have focused on a number of topics including the root caused of youth violence, well being and self esteem, importance of friendship. The clubs have been interactive as the workshops are combined with sport, namely boxing, archer, self defence.

We have see amazing engagement in both clubs from Netehredge and Meersbrook. We have collaborated with harlem bells, Brougt facilitatrs in e.g Denton Wilson, Aspire Boxing, trained boxing coach Shezad Younsis to enagage with the young and the mothes. The clubs have had upto 40 young children aged 8-15 attend over 20 mothers have engaged with the clubs, we have over 10 mothers ebngage on a weekly basis this club has been doing from strength to strength we have such a diverse group of families attending which is amazing to see-this illustrates the importance of ensuring we have protective positive pathways

Mums United delivered their MUSVPP (Mums United Sheffield Violence prevention programme) at Lowfield School.

Mums United have been delivering their programme to two school years comprising of over 40 students focusing on why young people turn to youth violence and examining the importance of peer relationships. consequences of knife crime. The sessions took place once a week for 5 weeks

Vital Signs Report

Mums United were honoured to take part in the vital signs report -the research was carried out to understand the areas for urgent investment and sustainable community development. Hallam University December 2020

Mums United assisted Hallam University department of Law and Criminology. They were carrying out a research project, commissioned by HMI Probation, entitled: Knife crime and young people - exploring promising strategy, interventions and casework in Youth Offending Teams.

The aim of this project is to investigate Youth Offending Team practices in dealing with knife crime, to share knowledge and identify good practices as well as existing barriers and challenges to success. We spoke to them at length about the rise of your violence in Sheffield and its implication and impact on our communities.

Charitable Bank

Mums United Charitable Bank was created following the pandemic where mothers and young people came together to distribute children activity packs/food/clothes to the vulnerable.

The young people believe that it has helped them with their selfesteem and confidence to know that they are helping those in need and has made them realise how lucky they are after seeing such poverty. It has made them question the appeal of the gang culture. it has also strengthened relationships with their mothers as both works collectively on the projects. Packs are distributed to low income based families, refugees, the homeless, women who suffer from domestic violence and abuse. We provide advocacy, access to food, clean clothes and support they need. Through this work, we have illustrated the importance of recycling and taking care of our environment

•The Charitable Bank has brought into focus the poverty that exists and the vulnerabilities of families, how their vulnerabilities are exploited by local gangs. Through the Charitable bank we not only focuses on providing food, we provide clothes and toys to vulnerable families and individuals. It is also a place where young people and mothers can develop their business and administrative skills

Risk Management

The Trustees actively review the major risks, which the charity faces on regular basis and believe that maintaining reserves at current levels, combined with an annual review of the controls over key financial systems, will provide sufficient resources in the events of adverse conditions. The trustees have also examined other operational and business risks faced by the charity and confirm that they have established systems to mitigate the significant risks.
