## **CUDDINGTON WI ANNUAL REPORT 2022-23** 

Yet again we have had a very busy year. It started in November 2022 with our AGM and a light-hearted quiz. Jenny Sadler continued as our President but two of the committee stood down after many years, Angela Weallens and Teresa Terrazas. This year we have welcomed Julie Matthews and Sue Hostler to the committee. (I would just like to take the opportunity to thank all my fellow committee members, past and present, for the work they have done or do to make this such a thriving and fun WI.) 

In December we held another Christmas Fair and a Christmas raffle, raising £225 for the Epsom Food Bank. Members also helped out at the Epsom and Ewell Silver Band Christmas Concert at St Mary’s church.  This month we swapped our regular coffee morning for a well-attended and enjoyable afternoon tea with homemade cakes at Nicola Davies’ house. 

In January we continued to socialise with a lively Beetle Drive at our monthly meeting and enjoyed a roast meal at the Hogsmill Carvery for our New Year Lunch. 

In our February meeting, Sophie Fryer taught us about making hats, feather and all. We also voted on the proposed 2023 resolutions with a clear majority voting for the resolution on clean rivers and Denise Gould organised the first of our new regular fundraising raffles. In February, we also had our first trip of the year with a group off to see Dirty Dancing at the Dominion Theatre. 

Rosemary Hilton entertained us in March with an interesting talk on making English cheese with some yummy samples to taste. Another group of members were off to Covent Garden Opera House for a backstage tour and we finished the month with litter picking around Wandgas in support of the Great British Spring Clean. 

Our speaker in April was Mike McSweeney who came to talk to us about the work of the Fulham Foundation and their plans at Wandgas. Some members and their families took the opportunity of the free tickets Mike provided to enjoy seeing the Fulham football team in action. 

May was the coronation of our new King Charles III and we celebrated in style toasting the new king with prosecco and enjoying a coronation buffet lunch with quiches, coronation chicken, salads and lovely desserts.  Volunteers also helped out at the Residents Association’s Coronation celebration at Wandgas in May. 



We continued our royal theme into June when Richard Griffin came to talk to us about his life as a bodyguard to the late Queen Elizabeth and other members of the royal family.  Some members also headed off on a coach trip to visit Windsor Castle on a hot but successful day out. 

June also saw us fundraising with a plant stall at our main meeting and a bottle tombola at the Big Day Out in Shadbolt Park. 

In July Phil Neale spoke to us about the work of the Epsom Repair Café and some members also had an enjoyable afternoon tea at Tasha’s Tearoom in Cheam. 

Even during our formal summer break in August we kept going, with a well attended informal picnic in Auriol Park. 

In September we had a talk from Tanya Stafford on the work of the Brigitte Trust. We also had another successful trip out – this time to Nonsuch Mansion and Whitehall Museum, complete with pizza lunch. 

In our October meeting, an author Victoria Scott talked to us about her work including her inspiration and research methods. We also donated used towels to be sent to Ghana. Also in October a few members joined the resurrected Heathlands meeting at Banstead to hear about costume making for Strictly and we rounded off the year with another trip out to see the lively musical Crazy for You in Covent Garden. 

It has been incredibly busy and vibrant year but on top of all of this we have been supporting the Terracycle initiative; had our monthly coffee mornings with book swap included; the Book Club discussions went on monthly; the walking groups walked weekly; the Knit and Natter group knitted and nattered together and a new Members on Their Own Whats App group was put in place where members seeking company can post an invite to others to join them. Although slow to really get going, it has facilitated a trip to an art exhibition and an outdoor summer concert.  We are also adding a new Lunch Club to our regular activities for next year. 

Thanks to the creative work of Julie Matthews, Sue Hostler and Maureen Jones we now also have a lovely new banner for our WI. 

Looking back on the year, we should be incredibly proud at how active we have all been - learning, fundraising, helping the community and most of all enjoying ourselves.
