Aim and purposes
The Parish Council (PC) has the responsibility of cooperating with our priest, the Reverend Father Alexander Haig, in promoting in the parish, the whole mission of the Orthodox Church. The trustees together with the PC are responsible for making certain that the parish meets its responsibilities as a registered charity; complies with the law and is accountable to donors, beneficiaries, volunteers, and the general public.
Objectives and Activities
The PC is committed to enabling as many people as possible to worship at our church and to become part of our parish community. The PC maintains an overview of worship throughout the parish and makes suggestions on how our services can involve Orthodox and those seeking Orthodoxy. Within the community we have many from countries who are predominately Orthodox as well as converts from the UK and other countries. Our services and worship put faith into practice through prayer and scripture, music and sacrament.
When planning our activities for the year, we have considered the Commission’s guidance on public benefit and, in particular, the supplementary guidance on charities for the advancement of religion. We try to enable ordinary people to live out their faith as part of our parish community through:

Worship and prayer; learning about the Gospel; and developing their knowledge and trust in Jesus.

Provision of pastoral care for people living in the parish.

Missionary and outreach work.
2021 in Review
Services were cancelled throughout the Archdiocese owing to the pandemic during the early part of the year. We opened our churches whenever we could for private prayer. A collection was held to raise money for the people of Beirut. In February the parish celebrated 25 years of regular worship. From the middle of the year the purchase of St Martin’s moved forward with our solicitors conducting searches. Archbishop Silouan visited in September and ordained Deacon Mark to the Diaconate. Also in September churches had many visitors at the Heritage open days. Finally, towards the end of the year there was good

news regarding the purchase of St Martins in that the final sale was imminent.
Owing to the disruption caused by the pandemic our statistics are based on 40 Sundays. During the year there were three Child Baptisms, no Adult Baptisms, and one adult Chrismation. There was one Marriage and one Funeral in the parish. The average attendance at the 40 Sunday liturgies held was 62.
Volunteers
We would like to thank all the volunteers who work so hard to make our church the lively and vibrant community it is.
Financial Review
All the property of The Orthodox Parish of St Helen of Colchester (charity number 1134418) was transferred on 31st December 2020 to The Orthodox Parish of St Martin and St Helen, Colchester CIO (charity number 1192469) which has succeeded the former charity in all its activities from the beginning of 2021.
Our unrestricted income for 2021 was £20,049; our expenditure £7,687; Our unrestricted accumulated fund is £71,041. The restricted fund for St Martins at end of year stands at £156,836, making total funds held £227,877.
The reserves remain high compared with our running expenses, but with the ongoing attempt to purchase St Martins it seems prudent to retain a high level of unrestricted reserves.
We use the receipts and payments method of accounts preparation that may be adopted where a non-company charity has a gross income of £250,000 or less during the year. It consists of an account summarising all moneys received and paid out by the charity in the financial year, and a statement giving details of its assets and liabilities at the end of the year.
All gift aid claimed against donations to the St Martins appeal have been credited to the appeal and all future payments will be treated likewise.
In 2013 the Parish Council met without Father Alexander and his wife Khouria Hilary present and voted in favour of an honourarium of £500 to each of them for the hard work that they put in during Lent and in particular Holy Week. These honouraria continue to be paid. No other trustee receives payments other than expenses.
