Objectives and Activities

SORP reference
Summary of the purposes of the
charity as set out in its governing
document
Para 1.17 The object of the CIO is to advance the Christian
faith for the public benefit in accordance with the
statement of doctrines and practices in the
Schedule hereto in Somerset and in such other
parts of the United Kingdom, or the world as the
charity trustees may from time to time think fit.
Summary of the main activities
in relation to those purposes for
the public benefit, in particular,
the activities, projects or
services identified in the
accounts.
Para 1.17 and
1.19
The church's charitable objects are primarily
focused on the advancement of the Christian
faith. All regular public worship is provided free of
charge in the Chapel building. Anyone may attend
worship services on most Sunday mornings and
evenings. Teaching the Christian faith provides
advancement of education to both adults and
children on Sundays via the worship services and
Sunday School, children’s clubs and weekly Bible
studies. In 2020/21 most activities were both in
person and also via Zoom so that during the
Covid situation more people could attend.
Children's clubs normally in person had to be
changed to online via Zoom in 20/21.
Coffee mornings on a monthly basis had to be
postponed due to Covid in 2020/21.
Special events with community activities,
refreshments, providing meals, singing and
teaching, were limited due to Covid in 20/21.
These activities are advertised by word of mouth
and on notice boards, with flyers and in the local
village magazine. Men’s Breakfasts continued in
the local Village Inn.
Gifts of Real Easter Eggs were given to the local
Catcott Primary School, which contain a book
with the story of Easter inside, also given to the
children of SSchool and KidsZone club at the
Chapel.
Charitable giving was continued in 2020/21 to a
range of individuals and Christian organisations.
These provide public benefit in the relief of
poverty and humanitarian need, often for minority
groups with particular needs such as the elderly,
eg St Margaret’s Hospice in Taunton, Christmas
shoe box appeal and donations to Barnabas Fund
and Leprosy Mission. People in other countries
who are disadvantaged, or suffering from natural
disasters benefit from these donations and gifts
from the church.
First Aid training, Fire Warden training and
Safeguarding training was arranged, for several
volunteers and is a benefit for all at the Chapel.
Statement confirming whether
the trustees have had regard to
the guidance issued by the
Charity Commission on public
benefit
Para 1.18 As trustees of Edington Chapel, we confirm that
we have followed the guidance as issued by the
Charity Commission on public benefit.

Para 1.20 20 to 30 people attended morning services and 8 to
15 for the evening services, both in person and via
Zoom. This enables many to join in worship and
benefit from Bible teaching.
All services between late December 2020 and April
2021, were via Zoom due to Covid situation. This was
a real benefit to all who joined. Three volunteers were
trained in the use of Zoom and this was beneficial in
beneficiaries and any
wider benefits to
society as a whole.
the following year when services have been both in
person at the Church and via Zoom.
Refreshments after morning services resumed after
Covid restrictions lifted. This was good for
encouragement and support among the congregation,
some who had been very isolated.
Sunday School for 6 to 8 children enables children to
have fun and learn Bible teaching and the Christian
message.
A children’s club was held most Fridays in term time.
This had to be on Zoom and was intended to resume
in person but there was not a leader able to do this.
Our part time paid Church / children’s worker left the
chapel in February 2021. We do have in mind to
appoint another part time children’s / community
worker in the future.
Safeguarding training was completed for all volunteers
with Children and some Trustees. This benefits the
work with children and ensures the Chapel complies
with Gov regulations.
18 real easter Eggs with story books were given to
Catcott Primary School, which encouraged the school
and children to understand the message of Easter.
Regular weekly prayer meetings continued for those in
need. Many cards and flowers, expressing care,
sympathy and concern have been sent to those with
health, or other care needs. Supporting friends and
families is an important part of the work of the Chapel,
listening to people’s worries and problems especially
those with mental health issues.
Regular monthly visiting was continued by a local
Christian worker and Chapel members, to homes in
the surrounding Polden villages area. This aims to
share the Christian message and was welcomed by
many of those visited and they were given Chapel
welcome leaflets and Christian booklets.
The Men’s Breakfast was restarted, every 3 months
and were well received and attended by 10 to 15 local
men, at the Crown Inn, Catcott. This is a great
encouragement to men and also supports the local
Inn.
A Coffee Morning in aid of The Leprosy Mission UK
(TLM), was held via Zoom, in February 2021. This
raised awareness by participants of the needs to
support a hospital in India. A donation was made to
TLM.
Harvest produce was donated by church attendees
and taken to St Margaret’s Hospice in Taunton. In
addition, a gift of £250 was given to help the work of
care at the hospice.

£500 was donated to Barnabas Fund in October, to help people in other countries with a range of difficulties. This is one example of the £8077 given to various Missions to support individuals and mission organisations both overseas and in the UK. 37 Christmas shoe boxes were sent to Blythswood, a UK charity. 19 of these were filled by people from the Chapel. This was a Chapel and community project which encourages local people and helps and supports disadvantaged people in Eastern Europe. Maintenance of the chapel buildings and grounds continued. This ensured the buildings were in a good state for use of the congregation and community, eg. painting of the interior walls of the main hall was completed in March 2021. A 5 yearly Inspection of the Church buildings was carried out in August 2021, by the Trust who own the Chapel. They were very satisfied with the state of the property and that we are compliant with current government regulations, Health and Safety etc.

Independent Examiner's Report to the Trustees of Edington Chapel.

I report on the accounts of the charity for the year ended 31 December 2021, which are set out on pages 4 to 5.

Respective Responsibilities of Trustees and Examiner

As the charity's trustees you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts; you consider that the audit requirement of Section 43(2) of the Charities Act 1993 (the Act) does not apply. It is my responsibility to state, on the basis of procedures specified in the General Directions given by the Charity Commissioners under section 43(7)(b) of the Act, whether particular matters have come to my attention

Basis of Independent Examiner’s Report

My examination was carried out in accordance with the General Directions given by the Charity Commissioners. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently I do not express an audit opinion on the view given by the accounts.

Independent Examiner’s Statement

In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention:

to keep accounting records in accordance with Section 41 of the Act: and to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and to comply with the accounting requirements of the Act

have not been met; or

(ii) to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
