Marie-Therese Woodward joined the YCW Board of Trustees in January 2022. She
had been providing financial accounting support, as a volunteer, prior to becoming Trustee and Treasurer.
**Our Vision:** To inspire a national team of ‘young climate warriors’. All children in KS2 and KS3 will have the opportunity and resources to help them learn about and understand climate change, and feel empowered to reflect, discuss and choose their own informed path of action.
## **Our Goals/Objectives:**
- 1) To increase children’s awareness and understanding of climate change - to inspire learning, increase knowledge and understanding, encourage values-led discussion and cultivate cross-curricular thinking.
- 2) To inspire behavioural change by the use of positive messaging and a ‘that’s doable’ mindset. Encourage awareness of the impact on climate change of daily activities, alongside normalising carbon-emissions cutting actions. ‘Little by little, a little becomes a lot’.
- 3) To encourage an appreciation and respect for nature and a shared responsibility for our planet and the values of social justice, inspiring empathy for others.
## **Our activities:**
- 1) **Weekly challenges** - YCW sets fun, age-appropriate, weekly term-time challenges to help children learn about our environment, climate change and ways to reduce carbon emissions. Weekly challenges are shared via our blog, social media, by email, and teachers receive a related weekly ‘schools pack’. Simple resources introduce the weekly theme with contextual information, images and video links, as well as suggested text for communicating the topic to parents.
- 2) **Climate Change Club in a Box** - A series of 10 ready-to-use, off-the-shelf, zero-cost
‘climate change club’ sessions, for use as an after-school club, or with an ‘eco-club’. Links to these materials are emailed to teachers who request them.
- 3) **Additional resources** - Our website provides additional YCW materials – assemblies and a Kahoot! Quiz, as well as curated links to video clips, webpages and news articles. Where practical we offer school visits.
## **Our achievements in 2021**
## **Overview**
- January 2021 – Social media assistant joined team – 1.5hrs a week.
- Spring 2021 – YCW Business Plan and Impact Statement produced.
- April 2021 – Climate Change Club in a Box launched on Earth Day 2021.
- September 2021 – Communications and Administrative assistant recruited – 16hrs a week (term time only).
- COP26. YCW was part of the ‘working group’ producing the ‘COP26 Schools Pack’ and the Forest of Promises initiative. This group was chaired by WWF, and the resources were produced by Twinkl.
- Autumn 2021 – Achieved £24,484 in a combination of grants – from the Aviva Community Fund and Aviva Climate Fund, Nineveh Trust, the Postcode Society, and an Aviva Crowdfunder.
- YCW Ambassador Programme in initial design stages.
## **Engaging with schools and families**
- 148 teachers signed up to receive our weekly resources over 2021, in addition to the 89 teachers already signed up by end 2020.
- Climate Change Club in a Box was requested by 84 teachers from launch to Dec 2021.
- 15 class certificates were sent to schools particularly engaged with COP26 activities, and 107 badges.
- School visits curtailed by Covid19. Summer 2021 – one assembly, and one as a ‘guest speaker’ at Speech Day.
- Families engaging directly with YCW has remained fairly static at just under 900 families. Without any focused attention the attrition rate balances new sign-ups. 200 badges were sent out to individual children, via their schools for ‘Hitting the Red Button’
## **‘Getting us out there’**
- YCW achieved press coverage in The Primary Times, The Week Junior (as Charity of the Week), JUNO, Sustainable Merton newsletter and the Henley Herald; and
one of our Young Climate Warriors wrote an article about YCW that was published by his MP.
- YCW Article published in Autumn, by Britmums – ‘How to inspire a green mindset in your children’
- Educational Recording Agency chose Young Climate Warriors as their Guest editor for their Climate Change playlist.
- In early 2021 we took some external social media advice, and started actively engaging with Instagram on a weekly basis, followed by Facebook in the Summer, and Twitter in the Autumn.
## **‘Working with others’**
- ‘Little by little, a little becomes a lot’ underpins the Young Climate Warriors initiative, and along these lines we also recognise that we are a small charity working in an increasingly busy space – but all pulling together, towards the same aim.
- We are active members of the Climate Coalition, and enjoy the value of this umbrella organisation – we supported their Show the Love, Time is Now, and Great Big Green Week campaigns last year.
- The Young Climate Warriors resources can be reached via signposting from a number of platforms. In 2021, we developed our relationship with Global Dimension (the education arm of Reboot the Future), they now share our resources, and ‘Count Us In’ for whom we are a ‘community hub’. We continue as a ‘showcased programme’ with Transform our World.
YCW challenges often link to initiatives, campaigns and resources provided by others. Over the course of 2021 this included: BBC News, Newsround, Bitesize, CBBC, The Royal Institution Christmas lectures, The Perfect Planet, EarthShot Prize – Repairing our Planet, Ted-Ed talks. WWF, Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust, RSPB. The Woodland Trust, Orangutan Alliance, Wildlifewatch, Just One Tree. EU, European Commission, European Space Agency, NASA National Centre for Atmospheric Science, , British Antarctic Survey, UK Met Office, Gridwatch, Inside Science, Natural History Museum. Seaweed manifesto, Seaweed farm/biofuel projects, Surfers against Sewage, Conservation International, Ocean Conservation Trust. Eat the seasons, Pick your own, Lovefoodhatewaste, Walkers recycling, Recycle Now. Global Goals, WaterAid, SolarAid, Fairtrade, Crack the Crises, Cafod, Earth Hour, Hubbub, Amazing People, Bill Gates, Amanda Gorman, Andy Goldsworthy, 26,000 conversations.

I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of the above charity (“the Trust”) for the year ended **31 / 12 / 2021** .
## **Responsibilities and basis of report**
As the charity's trustees, you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (“the Act”).
I report in respect of my examination of the Trust’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination, I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.
**Independent** I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material **examiner's** matters have come to my attention in connection with the **statement** examination which gives me cause to believe that in, any material respect:
- the accounting records were not kept in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act; or
- the accounts did not accord with the accounting records; or
- the accounts did not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a ‘true and fair’ view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.
I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
