During 2023 the Association continued to make progress with furthering its objectives.
Significant events were: -

The relocation and reconstruction of the former Sprotborough signal box to the Yorkshire Wolds Railway at Fimber, near Sledmere.

The agreement by NYMR to “house” two of our stock items in their new carriage stable close to Pickering Station – and leaving Goathland where they had been open to the elements for years.

Mr John Wrigley’s agreement to take on board the collation of a stock inventory – partly stimulated as a result of the need to recover materials from the home of a deceased member.
The Annual Accounts of the Association were placed before the members at the Annual General Meeting on 13[th] July 2024 and approved. The Trustees are satisfied that its resources are sufficient to meet all known and anticipated liabilities.
The Organisation pursues its object or restoration of Hull and Barnsley Railway preserved rolling stock though the assistance of its volunteers. Two assets were located at the Hull College with the object that restoration could, in part, be undertaken by students at the College as part of their course work. This was perceived not only to advance the restoration of the assets but also to engage and educate the wider community as to the history of the railway itself and the Hull and Barnsley Railway in particular. The remaining assets are located at the North Yorkshire Moors Railway where renovations are undertaken by our team of unpaid volunteers
The Trustees have recognised that, in order to restore the various assets to a stage where they can be used on heritage railways, external contractors will be required to deal with the mechanical aspects of work required. This is because the Organisation has neither the facilities nor technical know-how to bring the rolling stock up to modern regulatory requirements. Increased fund raising and/or commercial sponsorship and/or grant aid is recognised to be necessary for these objectives to be achieved.
Of some concern is that the Association has a declining membership – and many active members are (to put it politely) in the “third age”. The Trustees are considering methods of attracting new and younger members.
During the year we lost one of our trustees, Mr Nick Stringer. Nick was also the Chairman and a driving force behind the London and North Eastern Railway Coach Association. His dedication to the objects of that association and ours was unqualified. His knowledge and expertise was of great assistance to us all. He will be sorely missed.
