Trustees’ Annual Report For the period to 31st December 2022
The period to 31[st] December 2022 saw the Organisation making further modest progress in the restoration of its collection and to fostering awareness of the general public of the history of the Hull and Barnsley Railway. It has generated income from membership fees, donations from the public at exhibitions and sales of some memorabilia . At the period end the Organisation held funds of £32,249. It does not own or lease any land and buildings. Its overheads are quite limited – as can be viewed from its Income and Expenditure account.
Restoration of stock items takes place at 2 locations.
Coach no 58, (a six compartment brake third bogie coach built in 1909), and Coach No 1 (a three compartment, four wheel brake third dating back to 1884) are currently located at Hull College. Work is being carried out both by our volunteers and by students of the College. This is a joint venture designed to provide the students with the opportunity to exercise their skills in activities such as carpentry and to fulfil our educational objectives. Progress was slowed by the covid pandemic which itself resulted in some staff turnover at the College. Efforts are now being made to ensure that the venture is fully resumed. The ultimate object is to put both items back in full running condition and for them to be used on a heritage railway.
Coach 40, (a six compartment brake third built in 1907) and Van 2 (a four wheel engineers tool van from 1885) are located at Goathland on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. Restoration work is carried out by our volunteers. Slow progress is being made to both. It is intended that Coach 40 join Coach 58 in service on a heritage railway. Van 2, due to its method of construction and age, is considered unlikely to have a future as an operating item of rolling stock. Its future is nor likely to be as a static historic item – possibly housing a museum exhibiting memorabilia relating to the Hull and Barnsley Railway.
The Organisation also owns two open wagons, numbers 577 and 3679, which are currently in use at Goathland as static tea rooms.
Whilst the time and effort devoted by volunteers is welcome, it is recognised that the members of the Organisation do not have the ability to complete restoration of stock items to full running condition without the assistance of external specialist contractors. This is especially the case in relation to the mechanical/moving parts such as wheels, axles, bogies, braking systems, and underframes. To address this, approaches are being made to suitably experienced and qualified contractors to establish as far as possible the potential cost of engaging their services. The trustees are aware of their duty to apply funds held by the Organisation in further of its objectives, but are equally aware that the funds currently held will not be sufficient to achieve its objectives. There remains a possibility of obtaining external grant funding, a possibility that
can only realistically be pursued once a more precise assessment of the costs involved in the project have been made.
The activities of the Organisation are directed by its 7 member board of trustees who meet quarterly. Day to day activities are delegated to committees, each with its own manager. Committees meet six times a year and also communicate via social media (we have our own Facebook presence) and in the course of working visits to Hull College and Goathland.
Finally I as Chairman wish to express to our three Trustees who are also members of the London and North Eastern Coach Association, and who have assisted us with their knowledge and experience and made available their premises for Trustees meetings.
