This is our fourth year of reporting since registering as a Charity in November 2020 and the annual reporting period is 1[st] April 2024 to 31[st] March 2025. Shaldon Theatre Company (STC) have carried out a range of activities which meet its charitable objectives and which also benefit the community.
In July we staged a very successful production of 9 to 5 The Musical, this brought in some new members to the theatre company and boosted our membership. The rehearsals were in the village hall and was performed at our local theatre in Teignmouth. This was the biggest production the theatre company has staged, proving that live theatre in the local area is very popular, it was well attended and ticket sales were very good.
We have an annual summer performance of Zebediah Hook (ZH) which was performed during August 2024, this is held to raise funds to enable us to continue putting on our charity performances for members of the community who may find it difficult accessing local live theatre at reduced costs for our pantomime but is also where members of our community can see an open-air performance. The play is written by a local writer who is a long-standing member of the theatre company, the cast are also from the village and surrounding area. It is an open-air production with committee members doing a bucket collection afterwards and audience members can contribute if they so wish, making the play accessible to everyone as tickets are not sold for this production.
STC’s annual pantomime was performed in January 2025, this was a celebration of our 40[th] pantomime and a committee member wrote a bespoke script for us called Once Upon a Time in Pantoland. Our auditions in the local village hall were during the summer of 2024 with the purpose of inviting a varied section of the community, both adults and children, to attend. Just under 50 people attended the auditions, 99% of them coming from within a radius of 3 miles of Shaldon, which resulted in a total of 16 Principal roles and 15 ensemble parts, both for adults and children. This is in line with an STC primary objective of encouraging and enabling adults and junior members to enjoy and develop their talents and skills linked to all aspects of performing arts.
Two performances of Once Upon a Time in Pantoland were performed for our two charity evenings, Gateway Night, and Youth Night. Gateway Night is aimed at inviting members of the community, along with their carer’s, who might have mental health, physical disabilities or other specific needs which might cause difficulty for them to attend a regular theatrical performance.
Tickets for Gateway Night are subsidised by taking surplus income from regular performances and sponsorship from local businesses and individuals, enabling us to sell the tickets at 50% of the cost of the regular performances pricing structure. As in previous years we had lots of positive feedback from the staff of residential homes, carers and audience members that attended many saying it was the highlight outing of the year and was enjoyed hugely, with many enquiring when the next production would be.
Youth Night is for local youth organisations and youth clubs such a Scouts, Girl Guides and Devon Youth Carers who are invited to a dedicated performance just for these groups and again tickets are subsidised to the same format as Gateway Night. We are very pleased that one group who benefit from this charity
performance are the Devon Youth Carers organisation, where younger members of the community whom look after adult parents or relatives and may not have the time or ability to go to a theatre performance, are able to attend with the support that Devon Youth Carers gives them, this has become an enjoyable tradition for many of their members.
Both Gateway Night and Youth night is incredibly rewarding and a very important part of our ethos of making theatre accessible to all within our community and this also meets with the STC charitable objective of assisting charitable organisations in the promotion of performing arts.
We also held a fund-raising murder mystery evening in June and this was well attended by the local community and members of our theatre company, this was held in our local village hall and was to raise money to put towards our pantomime charity performances. We also held another fundraiser which was a themed Halloween night, again held in the village where the audience enjoyed bingo, a quiz and disco, this proved very popular with the attendees.
Audience members within the region of 2600 attended our performances during the 2024/25 season. We have the involvement of over 70 cast members and 30 back stage and technical crew, Directors, Musical Directors, Musicians and Choreographers all of whom benefitted from taking part in our productions. Backstage crew consisted of costume makers, prop makers, chaperones, lighting and stage personnel and programme sellers with an age-range of 8 to 80 years old and from all sections of the community. Our musical 9 to 5, pantomime and fundraising events have generated ticket sales of £43,859.00, with the vast majority of this coming from within the village of Shaldon & Teignmouth and its close surroundings. This, coupled with the fact that the percentage of auditionees from the local area is exceptionally high which re-enforces that the charity is formulated for the promotion of performing arts for the benefit of the local community. As well as this, the charity offers the ability for people from a dis-advantaged background or who have a disability that prevents them from attending conventional performances to access performing arts in a safe and inclusive surrounding. This has proved so successful within the local area that the groups of people have expanded in recent years, as word has spread within the community about the theatre company’s charitable performances that supports them.

## **Accountant's certificate**
We have examined the financial statements in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles.
The Theatre Company's income is derived from shows, voluntary donations and fund raising activities, which by their very nature are often in cash form and therefore cannot be fully controlled until entries are made in the accounting records.
In our opinion, subject to the foregoing, the accounts for the year to 31 March 2025 reflect a true and fair view of the Theatre Company's financial position and trading for the year.
We have not carried out an audit.
