This is our second year of reporting since we registering as a Charity in November 2020 and the annua reporting period is 1[st] April 2022 to 31[st] March 2023. Shaldon Theatre Company (STC) have carried out a range of activities which meet its charitable objectives and which also benefit the community. Our annual summer performance of Zebediah Hook (ZH) was performed during August to raise funds to enable us to continue putting on our charity performances at reduced costs for our pantomime. The play is an open-air production with committee members doing a bucket collection in which members of the audience contribute if they so wish, tickets are not sold and some audience members give aa voluntary donation.
During December 2022 a Murder Mystery Night (MMN) was held in the Victoria Hall, Shaldon which also acts as a fundraiser, the profit going towards the staging of our annual pantomime. It is also a means of bringing the community of Shaldon together, many of the audience are from the village some with both limited mobility and social interaction. This also meets one of STC’s primary charitable objectives inasmuch as organising and performing amateur dramatics.
STC’s annual pantomime was performed in January 2023 which took the form of Alan Frayn’s adaptation of Robinson Crusoe and the Pirates. Auditions were held locally during the summer of 2022 with the purpose of inviting a varied section of the community, both adults and children, to attend. Over 45 people attended the auditions, 99% of them coming from within a radius of 3 miles of Shaldon, which resulted in a total of 14 Principal roles and 18 ensemble parts, both for adults and children. This was another of STC primary objective encouraging adults and junior members to develop their talents and skills linked to all aspects of performing arts.
Two performances of Robinson Crusoe and the Pirates were dedicated to our charity nights Gateway Night and Youth Night. Gateway Night is aimed at inviting members of the community, along with their carer’s, who might have mental health or other specific needs which might cause difficulty to them accessing a regular dramatic performance. Tickets for Gateway Night are subsidised by taking surplus income from regular performances and selling the tickets at 50% of the cost of the regular performances pricing structure. Over 190 tickets were sold for Gateway Night and the feedback from the carers and groups that attended was very positive and the audience enjoyed it immensely. Many groups have been enquiring that they come again in 2024 for our next Gateway Night in 2023.
Youth Night is for local youth organisations such a Scouts, Girl Guides and Devon Youth Carers who are invited to a dedicated performance just for them and again tickets are subsidised to the same format as Gateway Night. One particular group who benefit are the Devon Youth Carers organisation where younger members of the community whom look after adult parents or relatives and may not have the time or ability to go to a dramatic performance without the organisation and support that Devon Youth Carers gives them.
Both Gateway Night and Youth night meet the STC charitable objective of assisting charitable organisations in the promotion of performing arts.
Audience members within the region of 1700 attended our performances and a total of over 50 cast members and 25 back stage and technical crew, Directors, Musical Directors, Musicians and Choreographers whom benefitted from taking part in our productions. Back-stage crew consisted of costume makers, chaperones, lighting and stage personnel and programme sellers with an agerange of 14 to 80 years old and from all sections of the community. Our Murder Mystery Nights and our pantomime Robinson Crusoe and the Pirates has generated ticket sales of £25,096.00 with the vast majority of them coming from within the village of Shaldon and its close surroundings. This, coupled with the fact that the percentage of auditionees from the local area is exceptionally high re-enforces that the charity is formulated for the promotion of performing arts for the benefit of the local community. As well as this the charity offers the ability for people from a dis-advantaged background or have a disability that prevents them from attending conventional performances to access performing arts in a safe and inclusive surrounding. The area from which these groups of people have come from has expanded in recent years as word has spread amongst this community about the charity’s events that supports them.
STC have also donated to a locally run charity called The Talent Box which supports and encourages its members, who all have disabilities, to stage several musical shows to members of the public, giving them a unique opportunity to develop their talents within the arts.
