SHALDON THEATRE COMPANY

Registered Charity Number 1192428

During the first reporting period, which is longer than the usual annual reporting period due to becoming a charity in November 2020. Shaldon Theatre Company (STC) have carried out a range of activities that meet its charitable objectives and which also benefit the community. A summer performance of Shout! The Musical was performed during August 2021, our first production post-Covid restrictions. During December 2021 a Murder Mystery Night (MMN) was held in Victoria Hall, Shaldon which acted as a fundraiser and a means of bringing the older members of the community of Shaldon together, some with both limited mobility and social interaction, after a pro-longed period of lockdown. The funds raised by this helped enable the staging of the annual pantomime to be staged at the end of January 2022 and also met one of STC’s primary charitable objectives inasmuch as organising and performing amateur dramatics. An annual play on the village Green - Zebediah Hook (ZH) was also performed during August in order to fundraise for our pantomime charity performances, an openair production and a bucket collection was organised by the committee and members of the audience which to contribute it was via this method rather than through ticket sales.

STC’s annual pantomime was performed in January 2022 which took the form of Alan Frayn’s adaptation of Beauty and the Beast (BATB). Auditions were held with the intention of inviting a broad and diverse section of the community, both adults and children, to attend. Over 40 people attended the auditions, 99% of them coming from within a radius of 3 miles of Shaldon, which resulted in a total of 13 Principal roles and 19 ensemble parts, both for adults and children. This again met another STC primary objective inasmuch as encouraging adults and junior members to develop the work and skills associated with all aspects of performing arts.

Part of the week’s performance of Beauty and the Beast included a specialist Gateway Night and Youth Night. Gateway Night is aimed at inviting members of the community, along with their carer’s, who might have mental health or other specific needs which might be a barrier to them accessing a regular dramatic performance. Tickets for Gateway Night are subsidised by taking surplus income from regular performances and selling the tickets at 50% of the cost of the regular performances pricing structure. Over 180 tickets were sold for Gateway Night and the feedback from the carers and institutions that attended post-event was that it was a great success and the audience thoroughly enjoyed it. This can be confirmed by the fact that most of the attendees have asked to re-book for the next Gateway Night in 2023.

Youth Night is where local youth organisations such a Scouts, Girl Guides and Devon Youth Carers are invited to a specific night just for them and again tickets are subsidised to the same format as Gateway Night. Specific emphasis and priority is given to the Devon Youth Carers organisation where younger members of the community whom look after adult parents or relatives and may not have the time or ability to go to a dramatic performance without the structure and support that Devon Youth Carers gives them.

Both Gateway Night and Youth night meet the STC charitable objective of assisting charitable organisations in the promotion of performing arts.

Audience members within the region of 2200 attended Shout!, BATB & MMN. Across ZH, MMN and BATB there was a total of 55 cast members and 25 back stage and technical crew, Directors, Musical Directors, Musicians and Choreographers whom benefitted from taking part in the two productions. Backstage crew consisted of costume makers, chaperones, lighting and stage personnel and programme sellers with an age-range of 14 to 80 years old and from all sections of the community. MMN and BATB generated a total of £25,096.00 in ticket sales with 98% of them from within an approximate 3-mile radius of Shaldon. Using these figures and the previous percentage of local auditionees confirms that STC truly promotes performing arts and the benefits of participation in a local context whilst offering support and opportunities to less privileged and vulnerable sections of the community who may not have access to performing arts.

STC have also donated to a locally run charity called The Helen Kirk Foundation which supports and encourages young people in the area to develop their talents within the arts.
