We provide numeracy and literacy classes and promote hygiene, clean water, sanitation, and conservation of nature as a living space for man ## **Our values** - Our beneficiaries are at the center of what we do - Provide quality services to our customers and value their views. - We want women to become financially independent - We only focus on our mission, work effectively and - We continually learn and develop new ways of doing things - We liaise with other organisations and women’s charities, to advance knowledge, share experience and help more people - We protect our charity’s money by spending wisely and only what is allowed by the charity’s governing document and policies. - We ensure that our volunteers and money raised matter ## **Report from chair and chief executive** Our organisation Shining Nyota Foundation was officially registered on 18 November 2020. This was in the middle of the Global pandemic of Covid – 19. This pandemic did not only have a remarkable impact on our lives here in the 2 Shining Nyota Foundation 22/10/2023 United Kingdom, but also across the globe - including the Democratic Republic of Congo where some of our beneficiaries reside. As a new charity, our priority was to set up the charity in terms of equipment, communication, registering beneficiaries, spreading the words (social media, website, journal,) and others, but, Covid -19 had a major impact on our beneficiaries who are in most cases, marginalised and disadvantaged women who had to be faced with the Covid-19 crise on top of absolute poverty. Our highest priority became the health and safety of our beneficiaries and volunteers, but also to deal with critical cases such those of domestic violence, which increased especially in England and Wales because of Covid 19 (Women’s Aid, 2020), cases of mental health and self-harm, but also cases of homelessness among women refugees and asylum seekers and child protection as in some cases children were involved. We advised and effectively dealt with these cases or referred them to appropriate organisations such the Home Office, Refugee Council, lawyers, the police, the court, Social Services, Social housing, housing repairs and many others where their cases could be dealt with effectively. From 2021 – 2022, we accomplished more than expected – Not only we managed to create a website to reach out to our target audiences and beneficiaries, to educate them about what we are trying to achieve, but also to let them and our beneficiaries know what we do and why we do it, why our charity matters are crucial and why helping our beneficiaries is the right thing to do. Because the fundings we received last year was for England & Wales only, there was a limitation on what we tried to achieve in the Democratic Republic of Congo, however, we managed to collect fund from cash donation and helped some of the Congo rural women with money for seeds, tools to work in the field such water cans, hoes, rakes and water boots. We also manage to help Congo women rural with masks, hands sanitizers, hand washers and others. Being able to sort out so many of our beneficiaries’ issues and putting smile back to their faces has inspired us to continue to do more. Our help meant so much to them and to their children. Also, the challenge of being a new charity also means that there are things we are still learning to do. Eventually, we are looking forward to year 2023 with a lot of positivity – from recruiting and training more volunteers to fundraising, registering more of our beneficiaries’, and undertaking more women’s projects. We need our trustees, volunteers and all those who want to be part of our organisation to have the right understanding on how things should function within the organisation and by following rules and regulations. We are in the process of printing Information that could be available to everyone, even though our website already plays a key role in terms of communication. Finally, we are so grateful to all those who have helped us move the charity forward. From our doners to our trustees and volunteers who have done an incredible job and still do. **Thank you to you all – we are so grateful.!** 3 Shining Nyota Foundation 22/10/2023 ## **REPORT FROM TRUSTEES FOR THE YEAR ENDING DECEMBER 31/12/2022** ## **Benefciaries in England & Wales** In the words of migrants’ women from Angola living in Manchester (England): “We have relied on Shining Nyota Foundation for guidance, advice, cvs and jobs search. We do not know what we would have done without this charity”. Shining Foundation has helped for almost everything. More recently, it helped us with college admission and claiming benefits that we are untitled to. ## **Testimony 1:** “I am Maria Tulumbo, I am a migrant woman from Angola, I live in Manchester (England), I got four kids under age 10. The beginning of 2022 was very difficult me and my children because of the Covid-19. I would even lack necessities such as washing powder, babies’ wipes, nappies, toilet rolls and female stuff such as pads. And Shining Nyota Foundation was able to assess and provided us these things through Amazon.com. We have been so grateful to this great organisation ## **Testimony 2** “I am Marie Zuzi. I was lacking necessities such as washing machine, pads, sugar, tea, nappies, and others. When I called Shining Nyota, they could not provide a washing machine, however, they sent things such as sugar, tea, pads and toothbrushes and through Amazon.com. I had to take a picture to thank them. 4 Shining Nyota Foundation 22/10/2023 ## **Testimony 3:** “Brenda: “we are migrant women from Kenya living in Coventry. Women Refugees Centre. Shining Nyota visited us to listen to our stories and what we need in terms of guidance, advice or just help with basic necessities…As most of us are from Kenya and English is our first language, we told Eliane from Shining Nyota that we did not need any help in terms of guidance and advice, however, we desperately need coats and jumpers for our kids as it was getting cold, and they did not have warm clothes. Shining Nyota provided us with £200 vouchers to get warm clothes from Primark for our children. Therefore, we thank shining Nyota as we do not know what we would have done for our children as it was very cold. ## **Our most critical cases:** We dealt with 2 mental health cases that needed appropriate judgement and referrals. As someone who has had a training on mental health first aid – I recognised signs on two of our beneficiaries when they were describing their symptoms. I had to urgently take necessaries measures and refer to the appropriate organisations, for example in the health care. We also had to deal with a domestic violence case which is still under investigation. We liaised with the social Services Department as the child was involved. **Testimony 4** ## **the rural women of the Democratic Republic of Congo** “We just want to thank Shining Nyota and the founder “maman Eliane” as we do not know where we would have been without their help at this difficult time. We got money for the seed, water boots and cans, hoes to work in the field and even hats for the sun.
