Objectives
The charity is focussed on preserving, developing and promoting British-Jewish choral heritage, bringing this unique music to audiences of all backgrounds across the UK and beyond. This to be done through the medium of live performances, recordings, films, commissioning of new music, and education programmes, with a view to creating better understanding about Jewish culture and religion.
Activities
Mosaic Voices is a newly registered charity and in this, its first year of activities, it achieved a considerable reach to audiences nationwide despite the severe impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on its live music activities.
When government regulations permitted, as well as internal regulations of The United Synagogues of Great Britain, live sacred services were delivered at its home synagogue, the New West End Synagogue in Bayswater, London. These included the High Holyday services for Jewish New Year and Day of Atonement services, which reach several hundred members of the community.
For the period of 2021, Mosaic Voices’ Musical Director was Michael Etherton (also its Founder) and its Composer in Residence was Benjamin Till.
In addition to live performances, Mosaic Voices continued to deliver new musical content online with considerable success and reach to listeners both in the UK and internationally. New studio recordings were completed for songs, ancient and contemporary, sung in Hebrew and Ladino, including Im Ninalu, Ochila La’el, Adio Querido, Tree of Life, Ve’al kulam, El Melech Yoshev, Adon Olam (Scarborough Fair), Shomer Yisrael, Yismechu, Psalm 23 and Sim Shalom . Arrangements were all by our Composer in Residence Benjamin Till. He also composed new settings for Yisemchu and Psalm 23. Australian composer Meta Cohen had been commissioned for the new setting of Sim Shalom . Music videos were also shot for all of these and the principle platform for their dissemination was YouTube.
During 2021, Mosaic Voices’ music videos were watched by 24,247 viewers for a total of 733 hours. The majority of views came from the UK but there were also significant numbers
of viuyers engaging with their content in the US (2.345). Brdzil (805) and Israel (224). The quality and originality of recordings in 2021 was such that Icading classical music rccord label Chandos Records agrccd to r¢1¢ an album of works by Mos4iiC Voices. scheduled for January 2022.
