document|The objects of the CIO are to advance the education
of young people living in the Hangdewa region of
Nepal (and neighbouring areas) in such ways as the
charity trustees think fit, including (but not limited to)
by:
(a) Making grants and providing facilities for
schools in Nepal.
(b) Awarding to such young people scholarships,
maintenance allowances or grants in order to
further their education.
(c) Providing funds for their education, to
undertake travel in furtherance of that
education or to prepare for entry to any
occupation, trade or profession on leaving
any educational establishment.|

identified in the accounts.|The main activities of the CIO are fundraising for
regular, one off and other larger donations
(principally from UK individuals with Gift Aid
elections) to enable the provision of grants to specific
Hangdewa schools for the education of c260 children
and young people from reception classes up to class
8, as well as some c25 bursaries for support at class
9 and 10 in local schools and/or university.
School leavers averaged a B+ (all students and all
subjects) in the public Basic Education Exam. It is
recognised as the best school in the district - indeed
for the whole area - and all classes are full with a
waiting list.
We take pride in providing equal opportunity for
education to girls and poorer families in Hangdewa
by subsidising their education and fees more than
boys in the region and encouraging families to send
their girls for a global standard of high quality and
broad education evidenced by our results and the life
chances provided to our pupils.
Projects during this period have included enhanced
learning experience through new buildings, widened
extra-curricular activities and school trips; attention|

those struggling with school subjects; and
engagement with other schools in the UK and Nepal
through volunteer teachers, student visits and inter-
school competitions.|

## **Achievements and Performance**

as a whole.|The major achievements for this year have been in
seeing funding result in schools and students
making progress in: school results obtained;
enhanced learning experience through new
buildings, widened extra-curricular activities and
school trips; attention to indigenous, poorer and
vulnerable children and those struggling with school
subjects; and engagement with other schools in the
UK and Nepal through volunteer teachers, student
visits and inter-school competitions.
Specifically:
1) Funding the Q. Learning Nepal School in
Hangdewa, NE Nepal, thereby enabling 262
children aged 4-14 to receive a quality
education. School leavers averaged a B+ (all
students and all subjects) in the public Basic
Education Exam. It is recognised as the best
school in the district - indeed for the whole
area - and all classes are full with a waiting
list. It achieved the local government status
as an approved location for taking public
exams.
2) Funding 28 school leavers aged 14-16 to
attend Kangchenjunga School in Taplejung
as weekly borders. This years' leavers all
passed their School Leavers Exam with 7
obtaining scholarships to attend the South
Western State College in Kathmandu to
study sciences and computers at Plus 2 level
(aged16-18).
3) Commissioning, completing and opening the
second building at the Early Years
Montessori School with 2 classrooms, an
office and a computer room/library, toilets
and a shower. The Montessori School has 5
classes and 150 students.
4) Funding the widening of the school's extra-
curricular activities to include boys' and girls'
football, badminton, table tennis, martial arts,|

chess, piano keyboard, guitar, singing, traditional dancing, drawing and painting. Extra classes are now given in the Limbu language and culture (the major indigenous tribe), and to help any struggling pupil in school subjects. There are also inter-house and inter-school competitions in spelling (Nepali and English), handwriting, general knowledge quizzes, speech making, drawing, chess and sport; all of which see pupils doing well or excelling. Class 8 (aged 14) again had a funded school-trip to Ilam and Darjeeling, thereby enabling many to travel for the first time more than a few miles from home. They visited a museum, zoo, rock garden, went on a horse, in a boat and in a cable car, as well as experiencing the culture of a different country and visiting a city for the first time. 5) Receiving donations to the CIO which have exceeded costs, thereby enabling the CIO to build a contingency fund. Other non-financial donations to the CIO for the school include 500 library books from Australia, uniforms and books from New Zealand, reconditioned laptops from the Turing Trust in Scotland and monthly sponsorship by approximately 60 'mentors' who sponsor one (or more) child. This covers eye tests and glasses for those who need them, sanitary pads for older girls, food for hungry children and requirements for celebrating festivals. 6) School reviews have been requested and have taken place including: a visit by the Social Welfare Council from Kathmandu who renewed their approval for the school based on the visit and the audited annual accounts; a new format at-risk register focussed on children boarding with villagers, relatives or a single parent (rather than both parents in a stable relationship) and those who walk each way to and from school for more than 2 hours (total 4 hours) each day; and because of the increased value of the buildings and contents, new insurance policies have been funded. 7) Volunteers continue to be encouraged: teachers from Pangbourne College and graduates from the Birmingham Conservatoire were asked to demonstrate new pedagogy in Maths, English, sport and music.7 dentists from Kathmandu made camp for three days at the school and checked all children's and teachers' teeth (and some parents' and grandparents'), filling decayed ones where necessary and
removing some bad ones; they also provided advice to students in dental hygiene and diet. 8) Visitors bring new experiences for the children. 30 teenagers from Millfield School and 15 from Charlotte's Haven on Earth in Kathmandu stayed for 10 days each. They led sports and games and went on joint trips with older children from the school to cultural centres, temples and cafes, as well as treks up Mount Pathibhara and to fly kites.
