The Trustees present their report and the unaudited financial statements of the Charity for the period ended 30 November 2023.

## **THE TRUSTEES** 

The following trustees served the Charity during the period and until the date of this report:

All major decisions are taken collectively by the Trustees guided by the Charity constitution. 

Dr Hawa Yatera continues to manage the administration and day to day operations of the charity until the Charity is able to employ an administrator to manage its projects. 

## **STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT** 

The charity started operations as a community group supported by well-wishers and Trustees using their own personal resources on 14 October 2019.  It was later registered with the Charity Commission for England Wales on 12 November 2020. The Charity is governed by its Trust Deed adopted on 05 November 2019. 

## **Recruitment and appointment of trustees** 

Recruitment and appointment of new trustees is made in line with the Trust Deed and with the consent of the Trustees.  The criteria set for the suitable candidate would be someone who is sensitive to the needs and demands of the organisation. 

In order to bring a range of skills and cover the broad reach of the charity, the trustees are from backgrounds that reflect the diversity of the people that the charity works with. 

## **Membership, Trustee’s induction, and training** 

Membership of the charity is open to any individual interested in helping the charity achieve its objectives and abide by the constitution.

New trustees are briefed by the existing trustees on the objects and operations of the charity and are referred to the guidance for new trustees published by the Charity Commission. 

In addition, all new trustees are encouraged to read the trust deed and discuss any queries arising from this with existing trustees. 

All trustees are expected to be familiar with the work of the charity and get involved in events and services regularly. The charity places emphasis on staff and volunteer development and where financially possible, trustees are also sent on training courses seen as beneficial to the charity. 

Trustees also discuss the future plans of the charity in relation to the objectives of the charity and ways to secure and strengthen the financial position of the charity. Plans for the charity are also put to the AGM at least once a year in which the ordinary members all have a chance to speak and vote. 

## **Risk review** 

The Trustees have assessed the major risks to which the Charity is exposed, in particular those related to the operations and finances.  They are satisfied that systems are in place to manage exposure to major risks. 

## **OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES** 

## **Objects of the Charity, principal activities and organisation of our work** 

The objects of the Charity are to preserve, protect and promote physical, social, and mental wellbeing of underprivileged women and girls of colour through increasing awareness, education, training, and social support. The Charity wants to empower, build resilience, improve confidence, and promote positive social and cultural togetherness while enhancing love and trust within the society. The Charity also advocates for quality education, social-economic support, and social entrepreneur skills for underprivileged women to fulfil their potential and achieve their dreams. The Charity currently covers communities in and around Sheffield. 

## **Public benefit** 

The Trustees confirm that they have complied with their duty to have due regard to the guidance on public benefit published by the Charity Commission in exercising their powers or duties. 

The charity has outreach community services, which empowers families that are disabled and also works in partnership with other organisations with similar objectives. 

The charity also works in collaboration with the local council and is a member of voluntary Agencies in Sheffield working with schools and social services to ensure collective actions for the improvement of health and social inequality within the city.

## **ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE** 

During the period, United Women Affiliation (UWA) continued to service the underprivileged population in Sheffield and surrounding areas. UWA continues to provide help, support, and empower disadvantaged women, single mothers, young people, and single fathers through awareness, educational training, life skills and educative meetings on the preventable social determinants of health, including promoting financial wellbeing, emotional well-being, and nature connection through allotment activities. UWA's focus is to improve the quality of life for underprivileged families and their children who face social injustice and inequalities. 

## **Services Highlights** 

In the period November 2022 to December 2023, UWA was able to deliver the following: 

- Outreach service for 178 families, most of the families experiencing long-term health conditions, mental health challenges, social isolation and anxiety, loneliness and exclusion. 

- We provided 54 culturally appropriate educative sessions and meetings. These meetings provide a safe space for the women to meet and share their experiences, do some exercise, meet professionals and discuss their health and family issues. Being in a unit has empowered the women and increased their confidence. Given this space, we have improved 89% of the women's mental health and emotional well-being. 

- We have provided 8 ESOL sessions to the 13 most deprived women and young people. Three qualified for advanced functional skill pathway. 

- We provided six (6) employability sessions to 10 young people. One young person is self-employed. 

- We had 178 activities to engage with nature, including participating in the allotment activities, including training sessions, harvesting sessions, and visits to farms. 

- We have provided information, guidance and advice to 102 women. 

- We supported four young people at school, engaging with parents, social workers and teachers. 

- We also provided digital skills for 16 women. Two of them are confident in using computers and are utilising the opportunity to do more courses. The goal of digital learning is to gain confidence and learn new qualifications that will give them opportunities for further education and employment. Also, they will improve their English and life skills.

The women at UWA achieved significant milestones. They were selected and won the Advanced Learning and Employability Award. As a result, four women have reached functional skills level 3, two have secured permanent employment, and two have become self-employed. These achievements are a testament to the success of UWA's programs and women's empowerment.  Below are some of the service user testimonies:

**Promoting children wellbeing and making them happy is the core business for UWA** 

_**“ I have story to talk about when I go back after school holiday”**_ 

UWA service users continue to experience inequality and social injustice that contributes to the increase of mental and social health challenges to the parents and their children. Taking into account that many people we serve live with long-term and complex health and social conditions and are also experiencing language barriers and digital skills limitations. Cultural appropriateness education and health awareness are promoted to increase mutual understanding between and within the community and professionals. Through this strategy, women could engage and participate in different community activities and events. 

Similarly, working with social services and some GPs, we could support a few service users who had difficulty accessing basic health and social services because of language issues and lack of trust due to past experiences. 

Furthermore, UWA continues experiencing financial difficulties, which puts the charity in a position of limited capacity to meet the needs of service users. As a strategy to ensure service users who completely depend on UWA are supported, with a culturally appropriate approach, we advocate for underprivileged voices; we work in partnership with other organisations to ensure we secure basic support for the families we serve. We had medical students and social accountability university students help us to conduct a social inclusion and equality survey; the outcome of the study supported the strategic implementation of culturally tailored service, appropriate training, and education, including university students' outreach support and introducing a social accountability program this year, we met many families and supported them in meeting their needs.

## **Transactions and financial position** 

The Statement of Financial Activity shows net expenditure for the period of £3,565 - surplus (2022: £7,172 - deficit). Net assets at 30 November 2023 stood at £9,449. The Charity continues to rely on donations and grants and is particularly grateful to the cooperating patterns above and those individuals and organisations who donate to it. 

## **Reserve Policy** 

The Charity carries reserves sufficient to meet its immediate needs. Its reserve policy is to minimise overheads and only commission projects once specific project funding is secured. 

With great appreciation we thank and acknowledge our funders listed below because we wouldn’t have been able to achieve the social value and community social impact without their support. We give you all a big thank you.

I report to the charity trustees on the financial statements for the year ended 30 November 2023, which comprise the statement of financial activities and statement of financial position and the related notes. 

## **Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner** 

The trustees are responsible for the preparation of the financial statements. The trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year and that an independent examination is needed. The charity's gross income did not exceed £250,000 and I am qualified to undertake the examination by being a qualified member of The Chartered Association of Certified Accountants (ACCA). 

Having satisfied myself that the charity is not subject to audit and is eligible for independent examination, it is my responsibility to: 

- examine the accounts under section 145 of the 2011 Act; 

- to follow the procedures laid down in the general Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act; and 

- to state whether particular matters have come to my attention. 

## **Basis of independent examiner's report** 

My examination was carried out in accordance with the general Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts and seeking explanations from trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a 'true and fair view' and the report is limited to those matters set out in the next statement.

## **1. General information** 

The charity is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO), registered with the Charities Commission and companies house in England and Wales. The address of the registered office and other administrative information is as given in the Trustees Report. 

## **2. Statement of compliance** 

These financial statements have been prepared in compliance the Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (Charities SORP (FRS 102)) and the Charities Act 2011. 

## **3. Accounting policies** 

## **Basis of preparation** 

These accounts have been prepared on a receipts and payments basis under the historical cost convention with items recognised at cost or transaction value unless otherwise stated in the relevant note(s) to these accounts. 

The financial statements are prepared in sterling, which is the functional currency of the entity. 

## **Fund accounting** 

Unrestricted funds held by the charity are funds that can be used in accordance with the charitable objects at the discretion of the trustees. 

Restricted funds held by the charity represent funds where there is a contractual requirement for it to be spent on a particular purpose and returned if unspent. 

## **Incoming resources** 

All incoming resources are included in the statement of financial activities when received or when the economic benefits associated with the transaction flows to the charity and the amount can be reliably measured. The following specific policies are applied to particular categories of income: 

- income from donations ,gifts for grants is recognised when received and its amount can be measured reliably. 

- legacy income is recognised on receipt and entitlement is established. 

- income from donated goods is measured at the fair value of the goods unless this is impractical to measure reliably, in which case the value is derived from the cost to the donor or the estimated resale value. Donated facilities and services are recognised in the accounts when services are received and the value can be reliably measured. No amounts are included for the contribution of general volunteers.

- income from contracts for the supply of services or goods is recognised when received. This is classified as unrestricted funds unless there is a contractual requirement for it to be spent on a particular purpose and returned if unspent, in which case it may be regarded as restricted. 

## **Resources expended** 

Expenditure is recognised on a payment basis. Expenditure includes any VAT which cannot be fully recovered, and is classified under headings of the statement of financial activities to which it relates: 

- expenditure on raising funds includes the costs of all fundraising activities, events, non-charitable trading activities, and the sale of donated goods. 

- expenditure on charitable activities includes all costs incurred by a charity in undertaking activities that further its charitable aims for the benefit of its beneficiaries, including those support costs and costs relating to the governance of the charity apportioned to charitable activities. 

- other expenditure includes all expenditure that is neither related to raising funds for the charity nor part of its expenditure on charitable activities. 

All costs are allocated to expenditure categories reflecting the use of the resource. Direct costs attributable to a single activity are allocated directly to that activity. Shared costs are apportioned between the activities they contribute to on a reasonable, justifiable and consistent basis.

The charity is a registered charity and therefore is not liable to income tax or corporation tax on income derived from its charitable activities, as it falls within the various exemptions available to registered charities. 

## **11. Related party transactions** 

Other than reimbursement of reasonable expenses of carrying out duties of a Trustee, no remuneration was paid to the Trustees or persons connected to them. 

## **12. Going concern** 

There are no material uncertainties about the charity's ability to continue as a going concern.
