Sunrise Diversity
Trustee Annual Report
Year ending 31 March 2023
This has been a challenging year for Sunrise Diversity but one where the combination of the
staff team, a growing group of volunteers and dedicated trustee5 have risen to challenges
we've faced.
The war in Ukraine has been an overriding influence through the year but supporting Ukrainian
refugees in addition to many others has stretched our capacity but also helped us learn and
grow. The scale of the i55ue and the positive and welcoming reaction of many of the public has
given us an opportunity to educate more widely, using p051tive examples. We've worked in
concert with other organisations to provide support and strengthened our relationships and
profile a5 a result. We've also learned hov4 needs can change swiftly over time through the arc
of the crisis and have adapted our services accordingly and have embraced new volunteets
from the body of people we 5UPPOrt which has been a wonderful development.
While we've witnessed great acts of kindness, we've also had to deal with members of the
public behaving in a les5 Posltive way when their stressed community has been stretched to
the limtts and they have reacted against new overnight arrivals on their doorstep with no
warning or explanations. Balance has been key.
i Gender identity issues have also domlnated the year and have come to the fo￿ in local
communities throtsgh opinions in the world of sport. We've intervened where there have been
prejudiced and unreasonable reactions and looked at ways to work with the community to
promote better understanding an(1 support.
Our unexpected learning has perhaps tome from coping with situations caused by the actions
of other parties in the mix. We've learned to challenge more strongly where we see other
organisations not carrying out the duties which are within their power. and we've seen the
need to hold local and natlonal government to account.
Our CEO left u5 early in the year for a new role with more time for her family and it gave us the
opportunity for a restructure. Trustees have stepped up to provide additional support during
this time which has been much appreciated. We've been very pleased to appoint Ana as Our
new CEO who has developed her career while at Sunrise and is now proving to be an
i empathetic but strong leader of our team.
nan¢ial Performance
The financial year 2022-2023 has been a difficult one for all tharitable institutions. The impact
of rising inflation, together with redu￿￿, or minimal. economic growth has led to a general
reluctance to spend or to give. This applies to both the public, private and the third sector,
including trusts and foundations, many of which have seen a huge rise in demand for their
I grants.
Sunrise has adapted to this new environment. We are sourcing new funding opportunities,
whilst continuing our core activities without interruption. It has not been easy and we are
indebted to our staff for their unfailing commitment to our aims. We ended the year close to
our budget, financially, but achieving many of our aims. We look fOn￿ard to a new yeaf of
challenge and expansion of our activities in North Devon.
Total income for the year from all activities was £204,99712022 £150,310), with expenditure of
£182,90612022 194,8061. The difference between the years is accounted for mainly by the
timing of a grant from the National Lottery Community Fund INLCFI, referred to in last year's
! report. We are mindful of our reliance on NLCF funding and we are undertaking a major
l exercise to source new funding opportunities in support of expanded planned activities in the
future.

Reserves Policy
The Trustees recognise that we must ensure that there are sufficient funds in resetve to cover
the costs of unexpected closure. The costs involved are mainly staff related, including
redundancy, but also include the c05t5 of cancelling contracts at short notice, our leased offices
and any overheads incurred during the period of closu￿.
Our policy is to ensure that we have sufficient funds to enable us to continue our work, whilst
winding up Commitments, for a minimum of six months. A5 at the year end, we are confident
that our reserves are sufficient to achieve this.
Declaration by Trustees
The Trustees have tonsidered the Report and Accounts in formal meetlng on
