## **Sunrise Diversity Trustee Report**
## **Objectives and activities**
Sunrise provides activities, services and events for people living across Northern Devon with diverse identities and ethnicities and also works in the wider community to celebrate diversity, change attitudes and challenge discrimination. Our aim is that all people in Northern Devon are accepted and respected within a truly inclusive, supportive and welcoming community.
## **Summary of Purposes** :
1) To promote equality and diversity for the public benefit, in particular, but not exclusively by: (a) promoting activities to eliminate discrimination in all its forms;
(b) raising public awareness in issues relating to equality and diversity;
(c) promoting activities to foster greater understanding and good relations between people from diverse backgrounds; and (d) cultivating a sentiment in favour of equality and diversity among the general public, in particular in Northern Devon
2) To promote social inclusion for the public benefit by preventing people from becoming socially excluded, relieving the needs of those people who are socially excluded and assisting them to integrate into society. In particular to promote activities designed to improve the skills, capacity and understanding of people in socially excluded groups across Northern Devon to enable them to challenge discrimination and participate more fully in society and local governance systems. To engage the wider community in activities to help raise awareness of the needs of socially excluded people and the benefits of a socially inclusive society, and to encourage greater public acceptance of, and engagement with, people and communities who are socially excluded.
## **Achievements and Performance during 2021-2022**
This has been another busy and challenging year for everyone at Sunrise. Covid continued to impact our work and plans, but one of our strengths as an organisation is our ability to quickly respond and adapt to changing needs and situations accordingly.
The direct activities and services Sunrise provides are guided by the needs of individuals and in the last 12 months we have provided advocacy, skills and knowledge activities, English Language activities and social opportunities.
This work included advocacy support for 50+ families dealing with issues ranging from immigration to employment, social isolation, debt and family welfare and many more. We worked with people from 32 different countries of birth and 12 different ethnicities.
We have enabled individuals to secure housing; access domestic abuse services; obtain food, clothing, beds and hygiene products; challenge discrimination at work; manage their finances; access benefits and healthcare and to secure employment and immigration status.
We have worked with and provided interpreters for people who speak many different languages from Tamil to Russian, Hungarian to Bengali – a total of 23 through the year. We use professional interpreters for all our advocacy.

Unfortunately, many agencies including some statutory services do not adopt this policy and we have continued to challenge agencies that fail to provide interpretation.
We have focused on improving the wellbeing of our beneficiaries supporting them to connect, to be active and to learn. We have delivered over 80 English Language activities, skills and knowledge sessions in 4 market towns, developed a walking group, a ‘meet and do’ group and numerous other wellbeing activities that have involved around 60 people.
Our wider community work focuses on celebrating diversity, changing attitudes and challenging discrimination. We have worked with over 200 young people in schools, engaged with professionals through 40 different organisations and we have delivered around 50 wider community events within Northern Devon.
With Covid we have been unable to deliver as many face to face activities as we would have liked but we have looked for other ways to engage and carry on our work and have held over 7,000 online engagements.
Our diversity training has been provided to partner agencies and professional organisations attended by 40+ individuals.
Finally, our wider community engagement has seen us lead or take part in activities focused on Black History Month, Hate Crime Awareness, LGBT+ History Month, International Women’s Day, Pride events and many more individually focused occasions that have promoted awareness and inspired positive conversations around the diversity of our rural area.
The Trustees of Sunrise Diversity have considered all the projects undertaken and we are satisfied that the charitable benefits are within the purposes defined in our governing document. In so doing, we are satisfied that the activities fall within the Charities Commission’s definition of public benefit.
## **Financial Performance**
Sunrise Diversity closed the year with £1,768 of unrestricted funds and a deficit of £46,317 of restricted funds. The deficit is due to the timing of funding received from the National Lottery Community Fund (NLCF). In September 2021 the grant of £121,016 was received from NLCF to cover a 2-year funded period to the end of March 2023.
Total income from grants, donations and other charitable activities was £150,310. Expenditure on charitable activities over the period was £194,806. Reserves of both restricted and unrestricted funds at the end of the financial period were £79,434.

## **Reserves Policy**
The trustees of Sunrise Diversity recognise that it is incumbent upon the Board to ensure that in the event of the charity having to close, there are sufficient funds to meet its liabilities in respect of redundancy costs, salaries, and other overheads. At the financial year end total unrestricted reserves stood at £66,274. Reserves are based on six months running costs and this reserve is slightly under our target of £72,000.
## **Funds in deficit** – nil
The Trustees are satisfied that Sunrise Diversity is a going concern as at the date of this report and has sufficient funds to maintain its activities for the foreseeable future.
## **Structure, Governance and Management**
Sunrise Diversity is a charitable company without share capital. It was registered with the Charity Commission on 11 Nov 2020, previously working as a CIC, which was registered on 26 March 201. Its governing document is a memorandum and articles of association. It has a Board of six Trustees also known as Directors and members of the company. It has a paid CEO, one full time staff member and seven part time paid staff including three caseworkers. There are an average of 6 volunteers. Trustees meet every 4-6 weeks and the CEO attends the meetings to report on activities.
General Meetings are held annually with no more than 15 months between the meetings. No business can be transacted at any general meeting unless it is quorate, and this is one third of the members/trustees/directors or two whichever is greater. At each AGM one third of the directors must retire, by rotation with those longest in office first. Appointment may be by ordinary resolution at any point by recommendation and approval of the current directors or at an AGM. Sunrise Diversity openly advertises Trustee vacancies on its website and appeals for Trustee applicants via its network of associated agencies and contacts.

## **Basis of independent examiner's report**
My examination was carried out in accordance with the general directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a 'true and fair view' and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.
## **Independent examiner's statement**
In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention:
- (1) which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements:
- to keep accounting records in accordance with section 386 of the Companies Act 2006; and
- to prepare accounts with accord with the accounting records, comply with the accounting requirements of section 396 of the Companies Act 2006 and the methods and principles of the Statement of Recommended Practice: Accounting and Reporting by Charities have not been met; or
- (2) to which, in my opinion, attention whould be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

## **1 Accounting Policies**
## **Statement of Compliance**
The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2015) - (Charities SORP (FRS 102)), the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) and the Charities Act 2011.
The Charity meets the definition of a public benefit entity under FRS 102. Assets and liabilities are initially recognised at historical cost or transaction value unless otherwise stated in the relevant accounting policy note(s).
## **Going Concern**
The trustees consider that there are no material uncertainties about the charity's ability to continue as a going concern nor any significant areas of uncertainty that affect the carrying value of assets held by the charity.
## **Income**
All income is recognised once the charity has entitlement to the income, it is probable that the income will be received and the amount of the income receivable can be measured reliably.
## **Resources Expended**
All expenditure is recognised once there is a legal or constructive obligation to that expenditure, it is probable settlement is required and the amount can be measured reliably. All costs are allocated to the applicable expenditure heading that aggregate similar costs to that category. Where costs cannot be directly attributed to particular headings they have been allocated on a basis consistent with the use of resources, with central staff costs allocated on the basis of time spent, and depreciation charges allocated on the portion of the asset’s use. Other support costs are allocated based on the spread of staff costs.
## **Charitable Activities**
Charitable expenditure comprises those costs incurred by the charity in the delivery of its activities and services for its beneficiaries. It includes both costs that can be allocated directly to such activities and those costs of an indirect nature necessary to support them.
## **Support Costs**
Support costs include central functions and have been allocated to activity cost categories on a basis consistent with the use of resources, for example, allocating property costs by floor areas, or per capita, staff costs by the time spent and other costs by their usage.
## **Governance costs**
These include the costs attributable to the charity’s compliance with constitutional and statutory requirements, including audit, strategic management and trustees' meetings and reimbursed expenses.
## **Tangible Fixed Assets**
Individual fixed assets are initially recorded at cost.
Depreciation is calculated so as to write off the cost of valuation of an asset, less its residual value, over the useful economic life of that asset as follows:

## **Trade debtors**
Trade debtors are amounts due from customers for services performed in the ordinary course of business. Trade debtors are recognised initially at the transaction price. They are subsequently measured at amortised cost using the effective interest method, less provision for impairment. A provision for the impairment of trade debtors is established when there is objective evidence that the Charity will not be able to collect all amounts due according to the original terms of the receivables.
## **Cash and Cash Equivalent**
Cash and cash equivalents comprise cash on hand and call deposits, and other short-term highly liquid investments that are readily convertible to a known amount of cash and are subject to an insignificant risk of change in value.

## **Trade Creditors**
Trade creditors are obligations to pay for goods or services that have been acquired in the ordinary course of business from suppliers. Accounts payable are classified as current liabilities if the charity does not have an unconditional right, at the end of the reporting period, to defer settlement of the creditor for at least twelve months after the reporting date.
## **Funds**
Unrestricted income funds are general funds that are available for use at the trustees' discretion in furtherance of the objectives of the charity.
Designated funds are unrestricted funds set aside for specific purposes at the discretion of the trustees.
Restricted income funds are those donated for use in a particular area or for specific purposes, the use of which is restricted to that area or purpose.
