Governance, Objectives and Activities
Governing Document
Radio BGM (also known as “Radio BGM - Prince Philip Hospital Radio”) is registered with the Charity Commission as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation, governed by our Constitution.
Organisational Structure
The charity trustees shall manage the affairs of the CIO and may for that purpose exercise all the powers of the CIO. It is the duty of each charity trustee to exercise their powers and to perform their functions as a trustee of the CIO in the way they decide, in good faith, would be most likely to further the purposes of the CIO. It is also their duty to exercise such care and skill as is reasonable in the circumstances of performing those duties, whilst having regard to any special knowledge or experience that he or she has.
Recruitment and Appointment of Trustees
Every appointed trustee must be appointed by a resolution passed at a properly convened meeting of the charity trustees, or at the annual general meeting. In selecting individuals for appointment, the trustees must have regard to the skills, knowledge and experience needed for the effective administration of the CIO.
Charitable Objectives & Activities
The objectives of the CIO are:
-
1) the relief of sickness, poor health and old age amongst people living in Carmarthenshire by providing a local broadcasting service for hospitals, residential homes and/or similar institutions, and for patients receiving community care; and

2) the advancement of health and prevention or relief of sickness for the public benefit through the promotion of the benefits of living a healthy lifestyle, and the importance of maintaining good personal, mental and physical health by (mainly, but not exclusively) the means of broadcasting health education messages to people living in Carmarthenshire.
Our main activity, undertaken for the benefit of the public, is to provide a unique service of music, news and information to the patients and staff of the Prince Philip Hospital, Llanelli.
We achieve this by broadcasting across the hospital grounds, in public areas such as the Minor Injuries Unit and the hospital canteen. The service can also be received at hospital bedside listening units on Channel 5 and digitally, both within the hospital and outside of the hospital, on our website and through our smart-phone app. Additionally, smart speaker devices can also receive the service by asking them to “Play Radio BGM”.

Appendix A - Chairman’s Report
Trustees and fellow members,
In 2024 Radio BGM celebrated a milestone achievement of being on air for 50 years for many radio stations small and large this indeed an event that they have been unable to enjoy. However, Radio BGM celebrated this silver anniversary with style, and I was so proud to have played a part in the festivities both at the party and throughout the year at other events.
2024 was it’s fair to say dominated by one thing the SPF; the shared prosperity fund grant. Just over 47 thousand was allocated to Radio BGM in May 24 to refit studio 1 and develop an outside broadcast unit to allow us to attend community events.
Last year we attended over 8 events and made a huge impact taking the message to everyone that Radio BGM was not just for patients in hospital but open for business to the world and delighted that we have a number planned for this year again.
After many months of hard work procuring equipment and developing campaigns and complying with the enormous task of monthly round ups to the council we successfully managed to complete the paperwork and the project was duly signed off which brought huge relief to both myself and Karen, indeed special thanks must be extended to Karen for not only her diligent efforts throughout the grant period but also for loaning funds to help us with cash flow whilst we awaited the claims to be completed.
Studio 1 is well-nigh complete and big thanks to the Hospital estates carpenters and electricians and painters who helped refit the window from the old Swansea Sound Studios courtesy of EBM. As soon as the on-air lighting is completed, and the telephone connections re-established and the touch screen re commissioned for the studio switching then training can commence in the next few weeks.
Another big project which we embarked upon was the introduction of an FM transmitter which was kindly paid for by the League of Hospital Friends and the licence application cost was met from the SPF fund. A huge debt of gratitude to them for their continued support.
I am pleased to say that in conjunction with the Prince Philip Hospital Estates dept and Mike and Steff we have successfully completed the installation of the equipment into the server room and are currently running a test ident loop to check coverage.
It is hoped that the necessary checks will have been completed by Saturday June 8[th] and that our station output will be on air from 10 am on this day.

The new server installation has taken us a lot longer than anticipated due to the demands of the studio refit but I'm happy to say that we are now nearly complete and special thanks must be extended to Dan Scott who has been a great help in installing and getting it ready for broadcast.
Radio BGM has consistently won awards every year and 2025 has been no exception as we were blessed with a plethora of silverware and particularly proud to have been awarded a bronze for station of the year at this year's HBA awards night at Hinckley.
On the Subject of Awards I was delighted to be in attendance at the Llanelli Town Council 50[th] Anniversary and Community Awards evening earlier this year along with Greg to receive an award for our services to the arts in Llanelli. This was particularly special as it showed what an impact Radio BGM was having within the community, a big thanks to every one of our members who have worked so hard to make this a reality.
Onto other matters - doubt remains regarding the Llanelli Talking Newspaper as a positive line of communication has not been established, it is hoped that this can be achieved before the premises becomes unusable.
Update received this morning Robert Lloyd has a meeting scheduled for Fri with the Charity Commission after which he will update us with next steps.
2025/26 is already looking equally exciting as a visit from the HBA Wales and West on Sunday allowed us to forge new links with other hospital stations and hopefully a stronger support network. This event was a massive success and thanks to all who helped.
I have been privileged to have been at the helm of Radio BGM for many years, but this year must rank as the most incredible one in the history of the station.
A big thank you to Gareth and Nic, Karen and Alessandro and all our members and Trustees for the titanic team effort and I look forward to this next twelve months as we launch the fully digital sound of BGM.

Appendix B - Trustees’ Report
The trustees are pleased to report that Radio BGM is meeting all community targets, with the past year marked by progress and success. Our technical operations and facilities continue to improve, ensuring that we provide high-quality services to our audience. We have also expanded our programming to include more diverse and engaging content, catering to a wider range of interests and needs within the community.
We are also happy that Radio BGM’s Operational Leads have strengthened their partnership with Hywel Dda Health Board in various areas, fostering collaboration in health promotion and community outreach. This partnership has allowed us to deliver valuable health-related information and support to our listeners, enhancing their wellbeing. We hope this collaboration continues for many years, benefiting both organisations and the community as a whole. We look forward to further developing these relationships and exploring new opportunities for growth and impact.
Fundraising efforts have consistently provided the necessary funds for Radio BGM to maintain full operations. We would like to recognise the diligent work of our members in securing grants and donations from various partners this year. Through their tireless efforts, these teams have not only ensured that we can continue to broadcast quality content, but they have also enabled us to expand our services and outreach into the broader community. Their ability to build relationships with donors and grant providers has been instrumental in obtaining financial support. This year, their efforts secured a major grant which has resulted in significantly bolstered our production resources. These contributions are vital for the sustainability and growth of Radio BGM, allowing us to innovate and improve our offerings. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to every member involved in these efforts.
Congratulations to the organisation for winning several awards at this year’s National Hospital Radio Awards. The National Hospital Radio Awards celebrate excellence in broadcasting within hospital radio stations across the country, recognising outstanding contributions and engaging content that benefit patients and staff alike. Our volunteers received awards for Best Special Event (50th Anniversary Broadcast), Best Specialist Music Programme (BGM Meets Caroline), and the remarkable achievement of a Bronze Station of the Year Award. These awards are a testament to the hard work and dedication of our team.

The Best Special Event award for our 50th Anniversary Broadcast honours the creativity and effort put into commemorating our long history and service to the community. The Best Specialist Music Programme award highlights the unique appeal and quality of "BGM Meets Caroline", which has captivated listeners with its exceptional programming. Finally, the
Bronze Station of the Year Award acknowledges our consistent performance and commitment to delivering top-notch radio services. Winning these awards has been incredibly gratifying for everyone involved. Our volunteers are thrilled and motivated to continue providing high-quality broadcasts. This recognition not only validates our efforts but also inspires us to strive for even greater achievements in the future.
Radio BGM operates under sound governance and financial responsibility. The organisation’s policies, procedures, and risk registers are reviewed regularly. Trustees and the operations committee are developing comprehensive strategic and development plans. The board of trustees is composed of experienced professionals who bring diverse expertise to oversee the organisation's activities and compliance with legal and regulatory requirements. Financial audits are conducted regularly to maintain transparency and accountability in the management of funds. The strategic plans being developed focus on expanding the organisation's reach, improving community engagement, and enhancing the quality of services provided. Additionally, Radio BGM prioritises continuous improvement by incorporating feedback from stakeholders and staying informed about industry best practices.
The Trustees of Radio BGM would like to thank all our volunteers involved in providing a varied service of news, music, and information to the patients, families, and staff of the local NHS service. Their contributions are highly valued. We are honoured to be part of this organisation. Radio BGM has been instrumental in enhancing the hospital experience by offering a diverse range of programmes that cater to different tastes and preferences. From uplifting music tracks to keep spirits high, to timely news updates keeping everyone informed and live broadcasts from community events, our volunteers work tirelessly to ensure quality broadcasts. The dedication shown by each volunteer is commendable, with many going above and beyond to research interesting topics, curate playlists, and deliver engaging content.
Our volunteers also interact with listeners, taking requests and messages which add a personal touch to the service. This interaction fosters a sense of community within the hospital environment, bridging the gap between patients, their families, and healthcare providers.
