Objertives and Activities Governing Document Radio BGM (also known as "Radio BGM Prince Philip Hospital Radio-l is registered with the Charity Commission a5 a Charitable Incorporated Organisation. govemed by our Constitution. Organisational Structure The charity trustees shall manage the affairs of the CIO and may for that purpose exercise all the powers of the CIO. It IS the duty of each charity trustee to exercise their powers and to perform their functions as a trustee of the CIO in the way they decide, in good faith, would be most likely to further the purposes of the CIO. It is also their duty to exercise such care and skill as is reasonable in the circumstances of performing those duties. whilst having regard to any special knowledge or experience that he or She has. Recruitment and Appointment of Trustees Every appointed trustee must be appointed by a resolution passed at a properly convened meeting of the charity trustees, or at the annual general meeting. Charitable Objertives & Artivitie5 The objectives of the CIO are- 11 the relief of sickness. poor health and old age amongst people living in Carmarthenshire by providing a local broadc3Sting service for hospitals. residential homes and/or similar institutions. and for patients receiving community care.. and 21 the advancement of health and prevention or relief of sickness for the public benefit through the promotion of the benefits of living a healthy lifestyle, and the importance of maintaining good personal. mental and physical health by {mainly, but not exclusively) the means of broadcasting health education messages to people living in Carmarthenshire. Our main activity, undertaken for the benefi't of the public, is to provide a unique service of music, news and information to the patients and staff of the Prince Philip Hospltal, Llanelli. We achieve this by broadcasting across the hospital grounds, in public areas such as the Minor Injuries Unit and the hospital canteen. The service can also be received at hospital bedside listening units on Channel 5 and digitally, both within the h05Pltal and outside of the hospital, on our website and through our Smart-phone app. Additionally, smart speaker devices can also receive the seNice by asking them to ~Play Radio BGM-. Once again it has been an enormous pleasure and an honour to be the Chair of such a wonderful charity. This last year has been possibly one of the busiest on record, but retrospectively it Is evident Radio BGM has grown and established itself as both a recognised and trusted brand both locally and further afield. March 2023 was a particularly difficult time for us all as we said goodnight to our dear friend Andrew, who played such a key role in helping develop our studio infrastructure. His legacy will live on both in our hearts. and in the work he did to develop our IT network. A plaque to honour him was placed outside Studio 2, and unveiled by his widow Marie. daughter Joanne, son Joshua and sister Vera earlier this year. Despite holding back the grief, our focus of attention was to ensure that the studios continued to work and that arby essential repairs or maintenance was carried out. Thi5 was achieved and all the equipment continued to function as normal. I would like to pay special thanks to Mr Fred Andrews for his invaluable asslstance with some of the technical challenges we faced during this time. Radio BGM is nothing without the volunteers who give their time. A successful recruitment campaign in 2023 resulted in welcoming Greg. Paul and Steff to our on-air line up - and they now form an integral part of our live broadcast schedule. A big thank you must go to our Trustees and to all our committee members. Our annual Christmas Carol Concert continued to form part of our broadcasts, and last year we relayed the seNice as part of our broadcasts on Christmas Day. The 2024 HBA Awards were certainly a memorable occasion as Radio BGM was fortunate to receive another award. News of the awards travelled far and wide, and we quickly became the subject of media attention on both S4C and BBC Radio Cymru as interest in our setvice flourished conveniently in time with Volunteers Week, which also brought our colleagues at Radio Bronglais some well-deserved attention. The Monday night'sioe Cymraeg Like-over continues to be a popular show on BGM. Pride in the Summer of .23 was a great success. and we all had a lot of fijn (despite the torrential rainll. It didn't dampen anyone's sprits, and it proved a great community event. The Reverend Eldorb Philips, prograrnme continues to form an appointment to listen to for many regular listeners - a bi9 thanks to Laura foi her work on the show. The members voted overwhelminglyto support us and kindly donated £IOOO to our funds- which we greatly appreciated - and will shortly be purchasing a piece of equipment in due course. Equipment donations were also made available to us- as the Swansea Sound Studios were sadly decommissioned in December, the bulky nature of much of the donations meant that we had to store it - firstly, in my house! _ then later it was moved to Hywel Dda's stores in Bynea. Thanks to Bauer Media for their generous donations, and to Mark Jones of'Bzams' for transportation and some storage of the woodwork. The latter part of the year was proving to be a challenging time. as we wrestled with the uncertainty of Pentre Awel and our inclusion in what was to be a landmark project. A substantial Shared Prosperity Fund grant application was carefully prepared and Submitted to the Council. Sadly, however, in the interirn period Hywel Dda changed the size of their proposed occupancy which meant they were unable to support our inclusion. Delays in the build and the uncertainty of an official opening date then all contributed to make it impossible for the SPF grant to support our application - so it was decided not to continue. Radio BGM was not to beaten, and Carmarthenshire County Council suggested that we re- apply for consideration in the fourth and final round of the Shared Prosperity Fund - which meant spending Christmas and the first week of the New Year hastily reworking the original plan to suit a redevelopment of the Studi05 at Prince Philip and focu5 on community events. Our Christmas broadcasts this year saw Steve Moore ICEO of the Health Board) getting behind the mic and playing his Christmas favourites, with dedications and shout-outs to staff working over Christmas. It was particularly poignant, as later Steve was to leave his post to take up the post of CEO in Devon NHS Trust. As a leaving present, he ensured that the promised air conditioning unit was f itted in Studio l - to everyone's delightl making this studio a comfortable area to work in and invite guests. As 2023 made wayforthe New Year, we marked this auspicious occasion by linking up with Rotary Club members Mike and Julia, who were in New Zealand as part of a fact-finding visit and a Rotary International exchange. As they shared their memories of a special New Years Eve with us, we raised a glass as we were about to welcome an exciting year,. quite possibly one of the most eventful and memorable in the history of the station. It's fair to say that we had some initial concerns that we would not be able to sell enough tickets - but as the date drew closer, we were pleasantly surprised. The whole event was extremely well supported from a range of people and organisations. Not only did we strengthen our financial position, but we also introduced Radio BGM to people who had never had any previous contact with us. A big thank you is due to the Diplomat for their generosity, and to all our raffle prize providers. Sincere condolences and a big thank you to Nicholas Heath for his most generous donation in lieu of flowers in memory of his dear mam. Finally, to celebrate the actual birthday weekend. we marked the event with several programmes designed to embrace the music and events of 1974- including a special programme about the history of the station. a number of musical tribute shows, and a special 'Six of the Best, _ presented by myself and Huw Thomas IDirector of Finance at Hywel Ddal. Throughout the run up to the big birthday, I had pondered how we could make the occasion of our 50th Anniversary significant and rewarding for some of our long serving members. The distant memory of a chance meeting with the Lord Lieutenant of Dyfed, in which we discussed Royal Garden parties, seemed the answer: and after a well-planned request to Miss Edwards, we received invites to a royal 'Garden Part¢ in May 2024.. which will inevitably be one of the subjects in next yearfs Chairman's Report! As we move into Easter, we were given news that we had been successful in our re-application of the SPF Grant - which is where this report concludes - but all I can say, is watch out 2024125... Report We, the trustees, are happy to report the ongoing work of Radio BGM is meeting all our community tsrgets. We feel that the past year has been successful and progressive for Radio BGM, and our technical opelations and facilities continue to grow from strength to strength as we enter our half-centennial year. We hope that the next year will be Just as successful and exciting. We are pleased that Radio BGM'S Operational Leads have continued to build a closer partnership working with Hywel Dda Health Board in a variety of areas. The trustees hope that this great partnership with Hywel Dda and hospital staff continue5 for many years to come. The fundraising teams have continued to provide the funds need by Radio BGM to continue to operate at a full seNice. We would like to acknowledge the hard work of many of our members in Securing grants and donations from many of our partners this year. including a £1000 donation from Rotary Llanelli and an exciting new grant in partnership with the UK Government Shared Prosperity Fund. We look fO￿ard to sharing the results of these efforts in the next Trustees. Report We would like to congratulate the organisation on winning another Bronze award at this year's National Hospital Radio Awards for our mobile app. We would also like to celebrate the efforts of our volunteers involved in many successful campaigns this year- including broadcasting from Llanelli Pride (which we anticipate will become an annual event),. the 50 Anniversary Gala event,. and receiving invites from the Lord Lieutenant of Carmarthenshire to Buckingham Palace garden parties this Spring. The trustees are disappointed that the Proposed opportunity to be a part of the Pentre Awel project did not come to fruition, due to circumstances beyond our control. We believe that Radio BGM is operating with good govemance and with financial responsibility at all levels of the organisation. An annual review of the organisation's policies, procedures & risk registers has been completed. A detailed strategic plan is to be developed by the Trustees. Finally, we, the Trustees of Radio BGM, would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to all our volunteers involved in providing a varied se￿iCe of news. music. and information to the patients, families and staff of the local NHS service.
