The established pattern has continued with three meetings per month. The first meeting of the month at the Village Hall has gained popularity, especially with new members, who have enjoyed the opportunity to “try their hand on a lathe” before committing to the purchase of their own machine and the associated tools. The workshop nights with members sharing their activities on line with fellow members remains popular as do the Interactive Remote Demonstrations (IRD) by turners from around the world. IRDs have enabled members to see demonstrators who would otherwise be unable to visit the Club.
Training sessions have continued with the four days held in April, June, September and November being fully subscribed. All levels of ability were catered for and the events were open to all with no requirement to join the Association before attendance. Several attendees have subsequently become members having had their appetite for woodturning whetted by our team of “in house” instructors.
In March the Association attended the Midlands Woodworking Show at Newark where it had a stand on which work was exhibited and several members were able to show their turning and associated skills to the public. The exhibits generated a lot of interest from visitors and the members staffing the stand were kept busy for the two days of the show.
Further purchases were made during the year to ensure that each of the four lathes were quipped with a full range of ancillary equipment. Each lathe now has available to the operator a face shield, safety spectacles, smock, a 4 jaw chuck, ancillary lighting, a six piece turning tool set and a “Cam Vac” dust extractor. We have endeavoured to source timber for training sessions and sale through the shop from local sustainable sources and continue to supply turning ancillaries from local suppliers.
On the financial front we have moved to a cash free environment. With the lack of banking facilities locally, card and online payments have proved far more acceptable that was first anticipated. We have ended the year in a robust situation having sold much of our “excess” stock to reduce our holding
in accord with our accountants advice. Despite rising costs we have been able to maintain our subscription levels for the coming year.
