2023 Report and Accounts for the Parochial Church Council of St Michael and All Angels, Farnsfield. Aims and purposes St Michael and All Angels Parochial Church Council (PCC) has the responsibility of cooperating with the incumbent, the Reverend Chris Pearse, in promoting the ecclesiastical parish, the whole mission of the Church, pastoral, evangelistic, social and ecumenical. Objectives and Activities In line with our Growing Disciples Plan and our ' l O-in-l O, Vision (to see 'lO% of thepeople in Farusfield living as devotedfollowers ofJesu,s within JO years ') the PCC is committed to enabling as many people as possible to engage with our church, find encouragement and support, become part of our worshipping communities, and grow in their faith and discipleship to Jesus. The PCC maintains an overview of worship and mission throughout the parish and makes suggestions on how our services and ministries might best connect with the diverse community in which we are placed. Our gathered worship enables us to put faith into practice through prayer and Scripture, music and sacrainent and equips us to go out and share the Good News of Jesus with our community. When planning our activities for the year, we have consideration for the Charity Commission's guidance on public benefit and, in particular, the supplementary guidance on charities for the advancement of religion through: Worship and prayer; learning about the gospel; developing their knowledge and trust in Jesus. Provision of pastoral care for people living in the parish Mission and outreach work. To facilitate this work, it is important that we are good stewards of the financial and material resources that we have. ACHIEVEMENTS AND DEVELOPMENTS Worshi and Pra er The PCC is keen to offer a range of services and opportunities for prayer and worship during the week and over the course of the year that connect with our local community and equip us all to go deeper in our faith and discipleship to Jesus.
We have identified some key markers/values for our life together as a church: 'Praying, Sowing, Serving, Growing, and are working to embed these in to the culture of our church, s life and ministry. Our regular service pattern (established in September 2021) of two Sunday moming services (9.15am & 10.30am) has continued throughout 2023. These two services are intentionally different in style and aim to connect with different groups of people within our community. It has been wonderful to see both of these services flourish over this past year and to see many new people finding a home at St Michael's alongside our longstanding members. To keep a sense of togetherness we have enjoyed the occasional shared service too and our shared coffee times between the services each week are always a good time to get to know one another. Our 9.15am service has maintained its regular service pattern with Holy Communion services on the I ' & 3, Sundays of the month and Morning Praise th services on the 2. & 4 Sundays. The organist and choir's regular involvement in leading our sung worship has been hugely appreciated and greatly enhances our services. The 10.30am service is more informal in style and with children and young people's provision each week has been very popular with families. Over the last year this service has grown to around 55 adults and over 25 children most weeks and it, s been great to see the development of the worship team in recent months too. We have enjoyed special services at Easter, HaeSt, Remembrance and Christmas, as well as joint selvices with our Cluster, and special 'Remembering Service, for those who have lost loved ones in recent years. We enjoyed another Adult Baptism service in November 2023 (where 4 adults were baptised/renewed their baptism vows) and we have continued to enjoy hosting the end of term selvices for St Michael's School. Tuesday Moming Prayer on Zoom, Tuesday Prayer Group, and Bible Chat have continued weekly, providing encouragement and spiritual nourishment to those attending. And in addition to all this a new Midweek Communion service began in September 2023 meeting monthly on Wednesday mornings. This service has been hosted by our Visiting Team and has been very well received, providing another good opportunity for people to join in with the worship life of our church and enjoy friendship and fellowship. Whilst we were not able to Livestream any services in 2023, we have continued to upload Sunday talks and readings to our website which remains a good way to stay connected with those unable to attend seIces.
Our dedicated team of Licensed Lay Ministers & Clergy continue to do a great job leading and preaching week by week, and we are hugely grateful to the many amazing volunteers and team members who serve across a variety of areas to enable our services and worship to flourish. Connect our After-school Church continues to be well supported and with a return to meeting weekly from September 2023 we have seen the numbers grow and stabilise which has been encouraging (with around 30-40 children coming each time). We have a very dedicated team and it's been good to welcome visitors throughout the year from other churches around the diocese who are interested in setting up a similar schools-based worship. We've also enjoyed some exciting 'Connect Specials, throughout 2023 including a Good Friday Trail, a Summer Picnic, a Light Party, and a Nativity Trail. These have all been great fun and have enabled us to connect and share the message of God's love with yet more children and families within our local community. As well as our regular services, we enable our community to celebrate and thank God at the milestones of the journey through life. Through baptism we thank God for the gift of life; in marriage, public vows are exchanged with God's blessing; through funeral services friends and family express their grief and give thanks for the life that is now complete in this world, and commend the person into God's keeping. In 2023 we had 23 baptisms and 2 weddings. We also had 6 funerals in church, 4 funerals at local crematoria, and 9 burial of ashes in the churchyard. At present there are 90 parishioners on the church electoral roll. 8 names were added during the year and 2 were removed (either through death or because they moved away from the parish). Pastoral Care There continues to be a good network of inforn]al support within our church and village community, and in 2023 it was good to see St Michael's Visiting Team being fonnally established. This team exists to offer spiritual and pastoral care to those who are housebound, bereaved, or in need of support in our village and church community. Home communion is available for those who would appreciate it, or simply a visit, chat, or prayer. The Ark Coffee Morning continued to meet on Friday mornings throughout 2023 and continues to provide a welcoming place for people across our village to come and enjoy time together. Alongside this we have been working hard to develop Homegroup provision to enable our regular members to be encouraged and supported in faith throughout
the week, and we have also had the occasional 'Friendship and Fun, gathering (including a Shrove Tuesday 'Beetle Drive,) which have enabled people from across our congregations to meet, chat and enjoy time together. Mission and Evan elism As a PCC and Leadership Team we continue to work with the diocese on our Growing Disciples Plan which helps to shape and develop our missional direction as a church. The plan is renewed regularly as we work towards our overarching vision and seek God on the next steps together. At our recent PCC Away Day we sensed that 'deepening prayer, and 'growing leaders, could be two important areas to focus on in the coming months. We had a great Alpha Course at the start of 2023 which was well attended and enabled people who were newer to faith to explore the big questions of life together and go deeper in their understanding. The course was well received and it was a joy to see some of those who attended going on to be baptised/re-affirni their baptismal vows in November. Helping those in need is a core part of our Christian faith and witness and we seek to support our local community and those further afield in a number of ways. Our St Michael's Choir continues to provide a great opportunity to invite members of our village into our church and enjoy singing together and the two choir concerts in 2023 were a huge success and remain hugely popular village events. Our Tuesday Toddler group 'Shining Starsy has continued throughout 2023 enabling those with babies and toddlers to connect and build relationships with each other and with the church. St Michael's also remains heavily involved in the Foodbank effort across the village with a number of church members on the Foodbank team, and the Refugee Support Group (again led by members of our church) has also continued its important work of helping refugees in the local area to settle in. As a church we continue to support other Christian organisations and in 2023 it was a joy to be able to give financially to our 'Missional Giving Partners,. These include our CMS (Church Mission Society) Mission Partners, Rosie & Stu Bayford (who are based in North-Eastem Brazil), the Trussell Trust, Betel, and the Emmaus Project in Newark. The aim with these 'Mission Partners, is that alongside offering financial support we can develop meaningful relationships with them and offer prayerful and practical help too. Alongside this, the Charity Shop team choose a number of other charities and initiatives to
give to each year as well, and in 2023 charities such as Newark Women 's Refuge, John Eastwood Hospice, and the Disasters Emergency Committee were supported financially. Staffin & Volunteers One major development in 2023 was the wonderful addition of a Youth Minister and it has been a joy to welcome Grace Aldridge to the St Michaels Team and family. Youth ministry was an area that we, d sensed increasingly a desire to invest in and develop, and we feel very grateful for God's provision in this regard. Grace has already made a big impact, starting a new 'Younger Youth, group on Sunday mornings and a new action team ('the Awesome Actioneers,) as well as supporting the development of our l 0.30am Worship Team. More is planned for this coming year including a new evening youth group and youth band so watch this space! This new role has been supported initially through the diocese by some SDF 4 funding (Strategic Development Fund), though we will need to work together going fonvards to ensure the financial stability of this important role longer term. Throughout 2023 Andy Proffitt has continued his excellent work as our Children aF7d Families Minister. As well as overseeing the children's groups (O- I Is) at our 10.30am Sunday service, leading the runningF of Connect, and leading our Tuesday morning toddler group 'Shining Stars,, Andy continues to build on our strong connections with the school and has contributed widely to our mission and ministry as a church. Angela Main continues to bring much dedication and support in her role as our Operational Assistant at St Michael's. This role, alongside administrative tasks, includes assisting the vicar and PCC in the strategic and operational development of St Michael's Church. Charlie Matthews has continued in his role as our church organist, and we very much appreciate his contribution to our worship at St Michael's week by week (alongside Jackie Smith too of course as our choir leader). Alison Slinger continues to offer accounting support to the church Treasurer and PCC and we remain hugely thankful for her invaluable support and input. We of course remain reliant upon our many dedicated volunteers for our mission and ministy to flourish as a church. Chari Inspiration Charity Shop has gone Irom strength to strength in 2023 and continues to be a real blessing to both the village at large and to the church. We are very thankful to all those who volunteer their time and energy there and particular thanks go to Christine McGregor and Janet Boothroyd for all they do in leading the shop team and for all the dedication and hard work they put in. Deane nod Corinne Moore and Ian Boothroyd began the year as our Deanery Synod representatives but given her appointment as a Parish Councillor Corinne felt it necessary to resign from this role, and in July 2023 Judith Alcock was co-opted as Deanery Synod rep in Corinne's place (with Corinne being co-opted to PCC instead). Ian Boothroyd continues, as a General Synod Representative, to sit on both deanery and diocesan synod. This, along with Clergy Chapter and other points of contact with the diocesan team, provides the PCC with an important link between the parish and the wider work of our Deanery and Diocese. Financial Review The income from unrestricted planned giving increased by 18 % to £30,343, building on the 170/0 increase in 202? and the 15 % increase from 2021. Grant income of £23,832 is detailed in the notes to the accounts. The income from the Inspiration charity shop has continued to increase after reopening lollowing on from covid restrictions. The net proceeds in 2023 were £51,985. (£38,751 in 2022.) £98,980 was spent from unrestricted funds to provide the Christian ministry from St Michael and All Angels Church, including the contribution to the diocesan parish share that largely covers the stipends and housing costs for the clergy, alongside diocese support and training of new lay and ordained ministers. The net result for the year was an excess of receipts over payments of £9,106 on unrestricted funds. Adding bank and deposit balances brought fonvard at the beginning of the year, the balances carried fonvard at 31, December on unrestricted funds totalled £143,523, of which £45,000 has been set aside to meet the trading costs of the charity shop and is carried fonvard as a designated fund. The restricted funds of £65,214 are detailed in the accounts.
Reserves Polic It is a good PCC policy to try to maintain a balance on unrestricted funds that equates to at least three months, unrestricted payments. This is equivalent to £15,000. It is held to smooth out fluctuations in cash flow and to meet emergencies. The cash balance of £143,523 held on unrestricted (including designated) funds at the year end more than covers this requirement. Structure overnance and mana ement The Parochial Church Council is a cotyorate body established by the Church of England. The PCC operates under the Parochial Church Council Powers Measure. The method of appointment of PCC members is set out in the Church Representation Rules. At St Michael and All Angels, the membership of the PCC consists of the incumbent (our vicar), churchwardens, and niembers elected by those members of the congregation who are on the electoral roll of the church. The PCC members are responsible for making decisions on all matters of general concem and importance to the parish, including deciding how the funds of the PCC are to be spent in line with our mission and ministry objectives. Administrative information St Michael and All AngTels Church is situated in Famsfield, Nottinghamshire. It is part of the Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham within the Church of England. The PCC is a body cory)orate (PCC Powers Measure 1956, Church Representation Rules 2011 } and a charity registered with the Charity Commission with number 1192128.

Responsibilities and basis of report As the charity trustees of the Trust you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 20111'the Act'l. I report in respect of my examination of the Trust's accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under settion 14515llbl of the Act.
