## **Introduction**
Woking Youth is a dedicated youth charity committed to making a positive impact on the lives of young people in the community of Woking. This report serves as a comprehensive overview of the charitable activities undertaken by Woking Youth during the past year, highlighting our mission, accomplishments, and the transformative effect of our youth-focused initiatives.
## **Who We Are and What We Do**
Founded in 2020 by two local youth workers who recognised the growing need for universal, free, and accessible youth work in Woking, Woking Youth has been steadfast in its commitment to empowering young people. We firmly believe in the profound and positive impact that sustained youth support can have on shaping the future of the next generation. Through the provision of safe spaces and purposeful activities, coupled with the guidance of positive role models, we strive to encourage, engage, and empower young people, regardless of their circumstances.
Our mission is clear—to identify and address the needs of the youth in Woking. At the core of our approach is a dedication to placing young people at the heart of everything we do, valuing their knowledge, ideas, and skills as integral components in shaping our practices and services. Central to our philosophy is a passionate commitment to championing and celebrating the successes of every young person we meet.
Collaboration is a cornerstone of our strategy. We actively partner with local agencies, working collectively to provide the best platform for young people to access the support they require. By engaging with the wider community, we advocate on behalf of young people, fostering an environment where their achievements are not only recognized but celebrated.

As we reflect on the past year, we express our gratitude to all those who have contributed to the success of Woking Youth. Together, we continue to make a meaningful difference in the lives of young people, fostering a future where they can thrive, grow, and achieve their fullest potential.
## **The Need**
As we engage with young people in our weekly sessions, the need for youth work becomes increasingly evident. Each interaction delves into a range of issues affecting their lives— such as mental health struggles, identity, poverty, social media, isolation, and educational challenges. These conversations reveal the profound impact on daily lives, emphasising the resilience required by some to stay afloat. Witnessing these struggles reinforces our belief in the positive impact of early intervention. Through our efforts, we've had the privilege of assisting numerous young people in confidently confronting these challenges, mitigating adverse effects. Despite these successes, there is still significant work to be done in this critical area, and the demand for our services continues to grow.
The stark statistics on the well-being of children and young people in Woking underscore the pressing need for dedicated youth work initiatives. One in eight children in Woking living in relative poverty highlights the economic challenges, with 24.4% belonging to absolute lowincome families and 18% experiencing overcrowding.
There is a growing need for mental health support; nationally, one in nine children had a probable mental health disorder before the pandemic, surging to one in six in 2020, a number that continues to increase[1] . This escalation is troubling, associated with a decreased likelihood for young people to feel safe at school or have supportive friends. The urgency is emphasised by a 39% increase in under 18s being referred for NHS mental health treatment in 2023[2] . Furthermore, online bullying affects one in eight 11 to 16-year-old social media users[3] , illustrating that challenges extend beyond physical spaces to online spaces too.
In Surrey, there has been a significant surge in referrals for Emotional Wellbeing and Mental Health services, escalating from around 1400 referrals per month in December 2020 to a heightened range of 1800 to 2000 per month from March 2021 through June 2021. These services are facing unprecedented strain, evident in the extended wait time for support, averaging 64 days[4] . In stark juxtaposition, our doors are open two nights a week, offering open access support with absolutely no waiting list. Here, young people aged 11-19 find a safe haven without the need to fulfil any criteria. Importantly, our support encompasses a broad scope, and it is long-term, extending for as long as young people need it. In a landscape where alternatives are limited, this distinctive feature accentuates our commitment to promptly and inclusively addressing the needs of the youth in Woking.

Given these challenging statistics, the need for comprehensive and accessible youth work in Woking is imperative. Initiatives offering long-term, free-to-access, and universal support are crucial to address the multifaceted issues faced by the youth, fostering an environment where they can navigate challenges and develop into resilient, empowered individuals. Woking Youths’ commitment to championing and celebrating young people's successes takes on renewed significance, emphasising the vital role that youth work plays in shaping a brighter future for Woking's youth.
Compared to the previous year, the current one signifies notable growth and organisational development for us. We successfully launched two distinct youth drop-ins in Woking, strategically located in areas identified as having significant needs. Our accomplishments include securing grants, enhancing our local standing among various stakeholders, including parents, other services and, most importantly, the youth population.
The establishment of the **Knaphill drop-in** was made possible through collaborative efforts. The County Council provided the venue at no cost, the Borough Council committed to covering salaries and certain governance expenses for a year, and the Knaphill Residents Association allocated a budget for resources. These drop-in sessions, driven by discussions with the youth expressing their needs, have proven highly successful, particularly in reaching and engaging with some of the most isolated young people in our communities, including those who are homeschooled and those with additional needs.
Building on the success of Knaphill, we initiated the **Lakeview drop-in** , funded by the Community Foundation for Surrey and the High Sheriff Youth Awards. Despite similar needs on paper, the self-selecting nature of drop-ins led to a distinct cohort, initially comprising young Muslim males and later expanding to older youth from the estate. This has resulted in dynamic sessions fostering strong and meaningful relationships among groups of young people who may not typically interact. While it's early days for this group, we anticipate continued growth throughout 2023.
However, amidst our successes, the year has not been without challenges. Initial struggles with the intricacies of running payroll led to delays in staff payments, causing temporary disruptions as we worked diligently to ensure all necessary procedures were in place. Additionally, disappointments were faced in the winter of 2022 when talks with the local authority over multi-year funding for a youth work team, due to commence in September 2023, did not materialise as expected. This setback was particularly impactful as our dedicated staff are currently juggling other jobs alongside their commitments to the charity. Despite the unforeseen challenges, the council demonstrated unwavering and commendable support throughout the process. The anticipated funding would have significantly alleviated this strain, enabling our team to dedicate their full attention to the charity, embark on new projects, and refine our operations. Regrettably, changes in the council's financial situation made the proposed multi-year funding an impossibility. However, in a testament to their recognition of the crucial importance of our work, the council proactively granted us a substantial one-off, unrestricted sum, ensuring the continuation of our efforts through the following year.
Looking ahead, our focus includes both sustaining and expanding our current initiatives. Discussions with Metropolitan Thames Valley Housing for a potential new club serving the Kingsmoor Estate are underway. Additionally, collaboration with other members of the

Reaching our Communities Youth stream aims to develop a comprehensive joint bid for all youth work in Woking.
While facing challenges, we are in an advantageous position, confident in our ability to maintain current operations and eager to focus on future endeavours. Both our team and I embrace the upcoming opportunities with enthusiasm.

There are child protection and safeguarding policies in place for staff, volunteers, and trustees all of whom must have a Current disclosure and Barring Check. These are renewed in line with statutory requirements. All trustees give their time voluntarily and receive no renumeration or other benefits.
## **Activities**
The objects of Woking Youth are:
1. To provide support, help and resource for young people between the ages of 11-25 living in the Borough of Woking, by providing advice and assistance and organising programmes of physical, educational, and other activities as a means of:
- a. Advancing in life and helping young people by developing their skills, capacities, and capabilities to enable them to participate in society as independent, mature, and responsible individuals.
- b. Advancing education.
- c. Providing recreational and leisure time activity in the interests of social welfare for people living in the area of benefit who have need by reason of their youth, age, infirmity or disability, poverty, or social and economic circumstances with a view to improving the conditions of life of such persons.
In the past year, our charity set ambitious goals and achieved remarkable milestones:
1. Successfully securing funding for and launching the Knaphill Youth Club marked a pivotal achievement, creating a safe space for local youth.
2. Increased funding expanded our services into a second area- Lakeview, allowing us to provide meaningful support to a growing number of young individuals in the community.
3. Diligent efforts to secure additional funding fortified our financial reserves, ensuring better sustainability.
Throughout the year, our dedication of the past couple of years translated into tangible results as we reached **113 young individuals** through our drop- in services and an additional **68 young people** during detached sessions. This number not only reflects the success of our initiatives but also reflects the growing relevance and influence of our charity within the community. As we reflect on the past year, we take pride in these accomplishments and look forward to continued growth and success in our mission to support the youth in Woking.
## **Knaphill Youth Drop-in**
Following the successful acquisition of funding for the Knaphill Youth Drop-in (with thanks to the Knaphill Residents Association and Woking Borough Council), we eagerly anticipated the use of the Woking Youth Arts Centre building. However, during the interim, we seized the opportunity to initiate a detached youth work session, venturing into the local area. This approach allowed us to engage with numerous young individuals, discussing the challenges

they faced, their perceptions of the local environment, and their desires for a youth centre and our role as youth workers.
Through these meaningful conversations, we not only gained valuable insights from the young people but also compiled an area profile. This comprehensive document outlined where we had met young people, the demographic of who we had met, issues we had discussed and identified any evidence of crime or anti-social behaviour. This served as a foundation to tailor our program to the specific needs highlighted during this exploratory phase.
The official launch of the youth club on July 23[rd] 2022, was a culmination of our efforts. We had the pleasure of reconnecting with many young people we had encountered in the community, as well as meeting new faces. This process not only marked the realisation of our project but also underscored the importance of community engagement and the invaluable role it played in shaping a youth centred safe space.
The Drop-in operates every Monday evening from 7:15 to 9:15 pm. Throughout this reporting period, we dedicated 74 hours to delivering support. Engaging in detached youth work, we connected with approximately 54 young individuals, fostering meaningful interactions and discussions. Furthermore, the Woking Youth Arts Centre hosted 39 young people during the drop-in sessions.
## **Lakeview Youth Drop- In**
In 2020, our commitment to meeting the evolving needs of young people in Woking led us to conduct a comprehensive needs assessment. This assessment highlighted Lakeview as another high-need area, prompting us to replicate our successful delivery model after the successful launch of the Knaphill Youth Club. With gratitude to the High Sheriff Youth Awards and the Community Foundation for Surrey, we secured the necessary funding and embarked on the journey of establishing our second youth drop-in in the Lakeview community.
Building on the success of our detached work in Knaphill, we extended the same approach to Lakeview. This intentional effort aimed to deepen our understanding of the area, forge connections with the local youth, and identify specific needs within the community. Subsequently, armed with insights garnered from this detached work, we launched the youth drop-in at the Lakeview Community Centre.
Scheduled weekly on Wednesdays from 6:30 to 8:30 pm, this session has become a vital community fixture. Throughout the reporting period, we dedicated 38 hours to providing support. **13 young individuals** actively participated in the youth drop-in, while an additional **14 young people** were engaged through the detached work carried out in the community. This multifaceted approach allowed us to create a more detailed and responsive support system tailored to the needs of the Lakeview area. The ongoing success of these initiatives underscores our commitment to fostering positive change and empowerment among the youth across Woking.
## **Let’s talk event: Youth engagement in Woking!**
In November 2022, Surrey County Council reached out to us, inviting our participation in an event held at Woking High School focused on youth engagement in the community. Over the course of a day, we engaged with 60 students in insightful discussions, delving into the needs they identified and the existing services available to assist them. It became evident that a significant gap existed between the issues these young people faced and the available services.

Collaborating closely with the students, we embarked on a creative journey to design ideas that would bridge this gap. The brilliance of their collective brainstorming sessions was truly remarkable, with each student contributing innovative ideas. Interestingly, despite the diverse perspectives, the final ideas across all groups converged on a common theme – the need for one or multiple easily accessible safe spaces. These spaces, envisioned by the students, would offer various activities, facilitated by attentive adults trained to provide support in a manner comfortable and responsive to the young people's needs at that moment.
A shared vision emerged, highlighting the importance of these spaces being free, open yearround, and accessible, particularly during after-school hours, evenings, and weekends. The consensus among the students was that confidentiality, beyond safeguarding concerns, should be paramount, and attendees should have a significant say in how these spaces were operated. Additionally, the students stressed the importance of these spaces being available for those already receiving social care or targeted one-to-one services. The rationale was clear – these safe spaces could serve as a complementary and supportive environment, facilitating the realisation of the students' other innovative ideas. The collective wisdom of these young minds reflects the need to create inclusive, accessible, and confidential safe spaces for young people.
These ideas were then presented to the public at Woking Library, from Saturday 27[th] May until Saturday 3[rd] June. The exhibition was well attended by members of the public, with 37 actively engaging with the interactive elements and QR codes throughout the exposition.
## **Reaching our Communities Woking**
Our ongoing collaboration with ROC Woking remains important to us, as we actively participate in this collective of diverse individuals and existing community groups within Woking. Together, we explore innovative avenues for collaboration, pooling resources for the greater good of the community. Our commitment extends to consistent involvement in the Youth Work committee, where we contribute to discussions and strategic planning.
An exciting milestone was reached as we played a key role in organizing the inaugural Youth Practitioners Forum, featuring Leigh Middleton, the chair of the National Youth Agency, as a distinguished guest speaker. This forum served as a platform for insightful discussions, sharing expertise, and fostering a stronger network among youth practitioners in Woking.
Furthermore, we actively contributed to the inception of a comprehensive joint bid involving multiple youth organisations across Woking. This ambitious initiative, set to be finalised in 2024, reflects our collective commitment to elevating youth services and creating a more impactful and interconnected support system for the youth in our community.
## **Youth Practitioners Woking**
At the core of our methodology lies a collaborative approach to youth work. By cultivating partnerships with local agencies, we enhance our capacity to provide comprehensive and impactful support to the young individuals under our care. In alignment with this ethos, we continue to actively participate as members of the Youth Practitioners Group in Woking. Designed to convene on a quarterly basis, this group serves as an informal platform for professionals working with young people in Woking to discuss identified needs, exchange ideas, and collectively enhance our efforts to offer the most effective support possible to the youth in our community.

## **Fundraising**
Over the course of this year, our endeavours to secure funding have proven successful, resulting in significant financial support for both the Knaphill and Lakeview projects.
Despite our continued efforts to secure more significant funding from the local council, which has consistently shown strong support, external challenges hindered the realisation of this objective. However, financial support was provided to ensure the continued delivery of our services over the following year.
As previously mentioned, we are actively involved in a collaborative endeavour to submit a multi-organisation bid, with the goal of obtaining a more substantial funding allocation to enhance our charity's financial stability. Our application to Knaphill Co-op to become one of their local causes was approved successfully. We are set to receive funds in late 2023, determined by the number of Co-op members who select our cause and make in-store purchases. Furthermore, we've been fortunate to receive contributions through personal giving, providing an additional boost to our financial resources and sustaining the continuation of our initiatives.
## **Safeguarding**
At the core of our efforts, safeguarding is not only a paramount commitment but also an ongoing, dynamic activity deeply woven into our mission. We prioritise the continual refinement and updating of staff training to ensure our team stays well-equipped with the latest knowledge and best practices in safeguarding. This proactive involvement highlights our dedication to maintaining a vigilant and responsive safeguarding culture within our charity. By regarding safeguarding as an ever-present and integral element of our daily activities, we enhance our ability to cultivate a secure, nurturing environment where the wellbeing of every young individual takes precedence. This dedication ensures that safeguarding is not merely a policy but a vital and actively embraced aspect embedded in the very fabric of our work.
## **Future Work**
The trajectory of our future work is characterised by a holistic and forward-thinking approach. Our commitment to the community remains steadfast as we prioritise the continuation of our current services, ensuring the sustained provision of essential support and resources to the youth we serve. Simultaneously, recognising the pressing needs in Kingfield, identified as an area of high need, we are embarking on an expansion initiative. This strategic move aims to extend our reach to this community, fostering positive change and empowerment among young individuals in an area where support is particularly crucial.
As a pivotal component of our growth strategy, we are gearing up for a significant leap with a multi-organisation bid. This entails the establishment of a dedicated local youth work team, working collaboratively to craft a joint bid that will secure the resources needed to amplify our impact. This ambitious endeavour aligns with our commitment to evolving and adapting to the changing landscape of youth services, ensuring that our provision is not only sustained but expanded to meet the ever-growing demand.

Recognising that our ability to reach and support more young individuals hinges on community engagement, we are placing a heightened emphasis on volunteer recruitment. The indispensable role of volunteers in augmenting our services cannot be overstated, and their contributions will be pivotal in supporting our growing numbers across all areas.
Additionally, to foster a culture of collective responsibility and engagement, we are diligently working on the development of an individual giving strategy. This initiative aims to inspire and involve community members in contributing personally to our mission, creating a network of supporters.
In essence, our future work is a dynamic blend of continuity, expansion, collaboration, community engagement, and strategic initiatives designed to continue to uplift the youth we serve.

This past year has marked a significant triumph for our charity, as we experienced success across key areas that surpassed our goals set for the year. Our dedication to making a positive impact on the lives of young individuals has been realised through the accomplishments we've achieved. Throughout the year, we had the privilege of connecting with inspiring young people who not only achieved remarkable feats but also demonstrated unwavering resilience in overcoming the challenges they faced. We take immense pride in the collective growth of our charity and, moreover, in the individual achievements of each young person we've had the honour to work with. ## **Henry**
This year we encountered a heartwarming success story in our mission to create spaces for all young individuals. The case of Henry, a boy with additional needs exemplifies the charity’s flexible approach to accommodating diverse needs within a youth club setting.
Henry faced challenges in integrating into mainstream social activities due to his additional needs. His father sought a supportive environment where Henry could interact with peers outside his specialist school, emphasizing the importance of social inclusion for his son's overall well-being.
Woking Youth’s approach proved to be the perfect solution. The charity’s commitment to flexibility in its approach allowed for tailored support to meet Henry's unique needs. Recognising the significance of acceptance from peers, the club actively engaged Henry's fellow teenagers, fostering an environment where inclusivity was not just encouraged but celebrated.
The flexible approach of Woking Youth Club involved personalised assistance for Henry, ensuring he felt comfortable and supported during club activities. In parallel, the charity facilitated awareness conversations with other club members, promoting understanding and acceptance of diversity.

Henry not only integrated into the youth drop in but thrived in the inclusive atmosphere. The acceptance from his peers played a pivotal role in his successful integration into the main group. The positive experience for both Henry and his father highlighted the impact of Woking Youth Club's commitment to providing safe and happy spaces for all young individuals, irrespective of their unique needs.
## **Chloe**
Chloe, a young individual with unmet needs, crossed paths with Woking Youth during an outreach event. Eager to share her story, it became evident that Chloe faced challenges that required support. Recognising the opportunity to make a difference in her life, we gave her information about our youth clubs and how she could access more support with us.
Chloe's participation in the youth club provided a platform for a deeper exploration of her needs. It became apparent that she had experienced distressing incidents, and her coping mechanisms were underdeveloped. We worked collaboratively to address Chloe's concerns, particularly focusing on managing anger issues that were hindering her progress.
Chloe's commitment to her personal growth was evident as she diligently worked to confront and overcome the challenges she faced. The club provided tailored coping strategies, offering a constructive outlet for her emotions. By addressing the root causes of her anger, Chloe gained the ability to reflect more openly on other underlying issues, fostering a positive environment for personal development.
Engaging in open conversations, the club discussed Chloe's aspirations for the future and identified stepping stones to help her achieve her goals. This holistic approach involved not only addressing immediate challenges but also planning for a more promising future. Discussions about education and career pathways contributed to Chloe's sense of purpose and direction.
Over the course of the year, Chloe made remarkable progress. The intervention strategies, coping mechanisms, and the supportive environment of Woking Youth played a crucial role in her journey.
## **Homeschooled young people**
Throughout the past year, Woking Youth has met a significant number of homeschooled individuals seeking social integration opportunities. This case study explores the positive impact of the youth club in providing a space for these young learners to connect with their peers, mitigating potential isolation associated with alternative education.
Woking Youth identified a growing need among homeschooled individuals for social engagement. Attending conventional schools was not an option for these young people, and the youth drop-in emerged as a good platform to address their unique requirements.
Woking Youth drop-ins became a good place for homeschooled youth, providing them with an opportunity to interact with peers in a supportive and inclusive environment. The club's activities were designed to encourage socialisation, collaboration, and the development of interpersonal skills, contributing to a sense of belonging for these individuals.
The Woking Youth team also gained invaluable insights into alternative education methods and homeschooling processes. Engaging with the families allowed the club to broaden its

The integration of homeschooled individuals into Woking Youth drop-ins proved to be a resounding success. The youth experienced a reduction in potential isolation, establishing connections with their peers. Simultaneously, the club expanded its understanding of alternative education, creating a more informed and inclusive space for all participants.
