Northampto Town of Sanctuary Yh Page 6 Trustees Annual Report We began the year with good news from the lottery. We secured five years fvnding for full-time Coordinator for NTOS and funding for a Community Kitchen. We advertised, interviewed, appointed and had our first full-time worker in place by January 81h This took pressu off the volunteers, who have been carrying the organisation for the last nine years, for which they were very grateful. We moved to cheaper offices with Volunlary Action Northamptonshire {VIN), in the middle of town and conts'nued our search for premises to tum into a Refugee Centre. Our partnership with VIN has grown and they kindly hosted some of our meetings and our advice sessions. The British Red Cross has continued to provide monthly, free advi sessions on immigrats'on and asylum matters. They also take cases where there is no recourse to public funds (NRPFS). Demand for Ihis service grows year on year. We find the British Red Cross realty valuable as they support individuals and households with many related issues and support them over time. Our Sel¢e to the Mmunity takes pressure off council services and gives them an estimated saving of £100,000 a year. The estimate is provided by a council officer working with refugees, asylum seekers. and NRPFS. Our volunteer ESOL teacher Liz left for pastu n. We thank her very much for her commitment and dedication. We were lucky to find a replacement. John Round took up the challenge, using both the community space at the Grosvenor Centre and the library. He has between 5 and 8 students for each weekly session. This worker left us in September and Zeke. our youth worker, stepped up with our Trustee Jamal to fill the gap. Zeke was appointed as our full-time worker and started in January 2025. Funding from Northampton Community Foundation helped us set up KeepFit4Women, a women's yoga session for refugee groups. This was an integration project for refugee women to come together with other local women. We equipped the dass with yoga mats and other materials. Our annual Refugee Week was disrupted when the General Election was called. This meant we had to rearrange the event we host at very short notice. This was done. We thank New Life Church in Spring Boroughs, for accommodats'ng us at short notice. ••r Northampto Town of Sanctuary Ytyjh Page 6 We were pleased to partner Delapré Abbey with an evening of poetry and talk with the Syrian Kurdish poet Amir Darwish. With Leam2Live (L2L), our youth group. we look for the development of leadership skills and give opportunities for young people to engage wth local groups and events. Young people look part in the EKI event as stewards. They played an important role in the Spring Boroughs Fesbval, again as stewards. They also took part in the Youth Summit, which is an annual youth led, youth conferen. Three young people participated in the emerging leaders course with NAYC. The 2024 Summer of Unrest following the tragic incident in Stockport. impacted our work. Although there was no unrest In our county, we were on red alert over August. We took ten young people to the John Lowther Centre for a self<atered weekend residential. Two volunteers accompanied our trustee, Jarnal. The young people enjoyed the experience and the feedback demonstrated once again that residentials are an important part of building teams and meeting needs. The L2L youth group meets on a Friday night, 48 weeks of the year. We close for 4 weeks over Christmas. However. we celebrated Christmas with our young people with Safe Haven donating each young person with a gift bag. Visitors to the group in 2024 included Neighbourhood Police, the Fire and Rescue Serlice. United Africa, Mark Dean from Free2Talk, and many more. Volunteers play a huge role with Northampton Town of Sanctuary. We provide an induction forthem, we offer training in First Aid, Child Protection, and Kitchen Hygiene. Everyone has an Enhan¢ed DBS Check. We are happy that our partnership with the University of Northampton continues, and they encourage students to volunteer with us. Special mention must be made of Aideen Fogaty. Aideen is a founder member of NTOS and a weekly volunteer at L2L. She bakes cakes andlor makes salad for the youth every week. And has been doing so for the last nine years. As we close thi5 year, we were able to recruit 14 new volunteer staff with varied responsibilib'es and strengths in project managemenc events coordinating, and markeb'ng. NTOS is proud of the work we do supportb'ng asylum seekers, refugees, unaccompanied children.
