Objectives and Activities

Summary of the purposes of the charity as set out in its governing document	Para 1.17	To promote, for the benefit of the inhabitants of Rutland and the surrounding area, the provision of an outdoor park facility based upon the remains of the Oakham Canal for recreation or other leisure time occupation of individuals who have need of such facilities by reason of their youth, age, infirmity or disablement, financial hardship or social and economic circumstances or the public at large in the interests of social welfare and with the object of improving the condition of life of the said inhabitants.

Para 1.17 and 1.19	The Oakham Canal Green Corridor Project has continued to work with landowners and the local authority to formalise and improve access to the canal corridor between the Springfield housing estate and the Oakham Enterprise Park. The Project is receiving full support from Rutland County Council.

Achievements and Performance

Para 1.20	The Oakham Canal Green Corridor Project was successful in reaching agreement with the Trustees of St. John and St. Anne to acquire permissive public access rights to previously informal footpaths which had developed along the western banks of the canal. Together with a range of organisations and local volunteers the Project has carried out extensive works to cut back overgrown vegetation, widening footpaths throughout the canal corridor. We have installed new access steps at the northern end of the project area, providing improved public access.

Financial Review

There is no set timescale for completing all of the work that we would like to do. Funds will be raised for each separate project or even each stage of a project. We will not spend money on projects (or project stages) unless we have already secured the funding for the project (or stage). Funding largely takes the form of grant income and donations received.

Local environmental company Ecology Resources has kindly supported The Oakham Canal Green Corridor Project carrying out a number of surveys to identify plant and animal species. Their work will help us to form long term maintenance strategies which will enhance existing habitats and diversity.

The Project supported the national Great Big Green Week with a work party creating habitat piles from previously cut and fallen branches.

The Project site was visited by the Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust and the Environment Agency who are fully supportive of the Project’s environmental aims.

The Trustees have engaged widely in the community. Students from Oakham School helped design our logo and generate fundraising ideas. They also attended a work party cutting back vegetation to improve public access. Melton Round Table and soldiers from the Royal Logistic Corps supported the construction of new access steps.

The Project Manager ran a series of guided walks over the summer months, and provided a talk to a local Brownie group• generating over £250 in donations. The Project has recruitod a number of volunteer Rangers who will be active along the canal corridor trimming vègetstion. engaging wlth th8 public, and reporting Issues. Thè Oakham Canal Green Corridor Project website and Facebook page have been Instrumental in engaging with the local community and have g8nerated a considerable amount of interest in ourwork. Our growing list of supporters and community volunteers initiated the sèarch for a Volunteer Manager and the Project welcomes new Trustee Paul Cundy who has agreed to take on thls role. Tho Project has been featured on local radlo (Rutland and Stamford Sound and 102 Th8 Eye) and our work has been filmed for an episodè of the BBC'S Escapo to the Country. Ourwork has been supported by a grant of £3,350 from the Healthy Rutland Grant Schème as well a corporate donation from Trivandi Limited whose staff ralsèd £4,778, the latter (In part) being used to purchase tools and equipment to support our ongoing maintonan¢o a¢tivitio$. Our work has made the footpaths along the canal corridor more accessible to the goneral public and wa hava angaged the local communlty In malntalnlng and uslng thls beautiful green space.
