A WORD FROM OUR TRUSTEES
This has been another successful fundraising year for Food Friends, and we are incredibly grateful to the local and national funders, trusts, businesses and individual supporters who continue to believe in our work.
FOOD FRIENDS 2024 - 2025
The trustees who are also directors of the charity for the purposes of the Companies Act 2006, present their report with the financial statements of the charity for the year ended 31 October 2025. The trustees have adopted the provisions of Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019).
This marks our fifth year as a registered charity, and another year of growth, resilience and meaningful impact for Food Friends. Over the past twelve months, we have continued to strengthen our meal-sharing initiative, expanding our reach across the Ashford, Swale, Canterbury and Medway districts to ensure even more people experiencing loneliness and isolation can benefit from the simple act of sharing food and friendship.
Our mission remains unchanged: to tackle social isolation and loneliness in communities through food and friendship, bringing the community together with every delicious bite.
Every meal shared creates an opportunity for connection, helping neighbours build lasting friendships and stronger, more connected communities.
We are proud to maintain our commissioned contract with Kent County Council, through the lead organisation IMAGO, who have supported the costs of our mealsharing initiative across the Canterbury, Swale and Ashford Districts. This partnership has been instrumental in enabling us to reach more people experiencing loneliness and isolation, providing Food Friends with a stable and sustainable income stream. As we move into 2026, uncertainty surrounding the future of this contract presents new challenges, but we are planning ahead with confidence, continuing to diversify our income and strengthen the charity's long-term sustainability.
We would also like to extend our sincere thanks to Macknade for selecting Food Friends as their charity of the year. It has been an incredible partnership, raising vital funds while introducing Food Friends to new audiences and helping spread awareness of our mission across the local community.
As a relatively young charity, we remain ambitious about what lies ahead. Our impact continues to be strengthened by the support of our volunteers, healthcare partners, local organisations and the communities we serve. Together, we are creating a movement where neighbours care for one another, one home-cooked meal at a time.
We send our heartfelt thanks to everyone who has supported Food Friends throughout the year. Our incredible volunteers continue to COOK, SHARE and CARE for their communities, giving their time, compassion and friendship to people who need it most. Their commitment is at the heart of everything we do.
This year we also said goodbye to Trustee Emily Lau, who stepped down from the Board. We would like to thank Emily for her valuable contribution and support during her time with Food Friends and wish her every success for the future.
Finally, we are delighted that Trustee Vanessa Hardy has taken on the role of Chair. Vanessa's leadership, experience and passion for our mission will help guide Food Friends through its next chapter as we continue to grow our reach and deepen our impact across Kent.

WHY OUR WORK MATTERS
At the same time as feeling less connected with others, people also feel less connected to their community.
Too many of us are feeling lonely, isolated and disconnected from our community.
Disconnection is accelerating at an alarming rate, stunting productivity, shortening lives and costing the UK £32 billion a year.
Loneliness and social isolation have serious health consequences. They can bring on strokes, heart attacks, anxiety, depression, and dementia - research even suggests that loneliness can be as harmful as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. The evidence is clear: tackling loneliness and isolation is essential for better health.
The public services that once kept our communities strong are stretched to breaking point by austerity and ongoing political and social turbulence. Meanwhile, shifts in work, lifestyle, and social patterns have frayed family ties and friendships, leaving many people feeling increasingly isolated and unsupported.
In the UK, loneliness and social isolation are on the rise with more people lacking meaningful interactions and conversations in their lives.
More than half of the UK feel distant from their neighbours.
In 2022 the campaign to end loneliness reported that approximately 7.1% of people (3.83 million) experience chronic loneliness, meaning they feel lonely often or always.
As a result, the UK scores worse than any other country in the EU when feelings of social isolation and neighbourhood belonging are combined.
Research undertaken by Age UK suggests that the number of over 50's experiencing loneliness is set to reach two million by 2026. This compares to 1.4 million in 2016/ 2017 – a 49% increase in 10 years.
To break the cycle, and end loneliness, we need bold, creative ideas that spark real connections and bring communities closer together.
OUR MODEL

Here at Food Friends, our vision is connected communities where everyone feels valued, visible, and supported. We believe that communities can grow stronger together - they just need a helping hand to break down the barriers that prevent them from connecting, sharing, and thriving together.
We achieve this through our home cooked meal sharing initiative which connects volunteers - who are looking to share extra portions of home cooked food - with a neighbour - who would benefit from a nutritious meal delivered with company and conversation. Bringing the community together with every delicious bite! Specifically we:
Identify people in the community who are lonely or isolated, predominantly through our established network of referral pathways, including: GP’s, Social Prescribers, Social Services, and local charities.
Connect those referred to us with a volunteer cook from their local community to deliver a home cooked meal, along with company and conversation, typically on a weekly basis. Often, doorstep chats develop into conversations over a cup of tea, and in time meaningful, sustainable friendships develop.
Identify the additional needs of food friends and facilitate access to relevant organisations and services such as: support groups and independence coordinators.
Ensure food friends are kept safe, referring concerns to social and health services when necessary.
Support food friends to meet others in their community through holding social dining events.

STORIES FROM OUR COMMUNITY
141 FOOD FRIENDSHIPS SUPPORTED
Chloe and Theo have been sharing meals with Joan for over a year now. What began as volunteering for Theo’s Duke of Edinburgh Award has grown into a meaningful and lasting friendship.

This video shares the story of Zoe and Joan, who were matched over a year ago. Since then, their weekly catch-ups have become a highlight of Zoe’s week and a source of genuine companionship for them both.

116 REFERRALS MADE TO HEALTH AND WELLBEING SERVICES TO KEEP OUR FOOD FRIENDS COMMUNITY WELL SUPPORTED
From referring a food friend to the Home Library Service for regular book deliveries, to connecting someone with the Frailty Team for further assessment, or contacting a GP practice when we have concerns about a food friend's wellbeing and they are unable to seek support independently, we help people access the wider support they need. By working closely with local health and community services, we ensure people are not only receiving food and friendship, but are also connected to the right help at the right time.

Our community lunches
Over the past 12 months, we held two community lunches, with our last welcoming a staggering 130 members of the Food Friends community. These special gatherings provided valuable opportunities to celebrate friendships formed through the initiative and to strengthen connections within our community. Many Food Friends do not usually leave their homes, but felt confident to do so with the support of their volunteer. One Food Friend told us:
"I didn’t think I would manage to come today, but felt determined to enjoy being surrounded by friendly people which so lifted my spirits. The lunch was amazing - you make such a difference to someone housebound like me. A thousand thanks!”

FOOD FRIENDS DEVELOPMENT - MEDWAY
ANNA AND SHIRLEY
We began building our Food Friends community in Medway at the end of 2024. Just under 12 months on, we are nearing our target of 20 initial matches, with a current waiting list of 25 food friends across Medway, highlighting the strong demand for our initiative.
Over the next 12 months, we aim to double the size of our community, supporting 40 matches by the end of 2026. This expansion will allow us to reach more people experiencing loneliness and isolation, strengthening social connections and building a more connected, resilient community.
JOHN AND KELLY
Kelly has been cooking for John for the past five months.
John struggles to leave his home and has few local connections - preparing meals is very difficult for him. Before being matched with Kelly, he relied mainly on microwave meals and peanut butter sandwiches.
John told us: “I really appreciate Kelly’s kindness - she’s a good egg! She has been incredibly helpful to me, as it’s very difficult for me to get out and around anywhere. I particularly enjoy the fresh vegetables, roast dinners and carrot cake. We have good chats about all sorts of things.”
Kelly shared: “Volunteering with Food Friends is a really easy way to do something good for your community - I really enjoy it.” Beyond meal-sharing, Kelly has supported John to access different health services, helped in tricky situations when he needed support, and visited him in hospital.
Anna has been cooking for Shirley for the past six months. Shirley has experienced a lot of loss and feels incredibly lonely. She isn’t able to leave her home and has a very small appetite.
Shirley told us: “My volunteer Anna is so incredibly sweet and lovely. I just can’t believe that Food Friends is free - it’s such a fantastic thing. Anna visits every Monday with something delicious, and we sit and eat together. It makes me focus on eating properly, and Anna really listens to me. She’s very special.”
Anna shared: “I really enjoy my visits to Shirley. Sharing a meal is simple, but it makes a real difference. I make Shirley eat her vegetables, but her favourite is when I bring homemade scones!”

VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCE
FOOD FRIENDS - FUTURE PLANS
Our growing volunteer network is central to the success and sustainability of Food Friends. Over the past 12 months, we have invested in our volunteers through a programme of training and shared learning, including dementia awareness, suicide prevention, loss and bereavement, food hygiene, and practical workshops. We are committed to valuing our volunteers, investing in their support, and listening carefully to their feedback. The following survey results highlight the experiences of our volunteers and help inform how we continue to strengthen and develop our initiative.
71% of volunteers said that they feel a strong sense of connection or belonging to their community because of their volunteering experience with us.
79% of volunteers feel that their food friendship has developed beyond the food.
As the map shows, Food Friends is currently active across the Swale, Ashford, and Canterbury districts, as well as Medway. Over the next 12 months, we will focus on strengthening and growing our network within these areas, while exploring opportunities to develop in new communities.
We are already receiving enquiries from volunteers and professionals across the county and beyond, interested in bringing Food Friends to their local area - reflecting the growing recognition of the value of our work. As an ambitious small charity, we have the experience, resources, and proven model to scale successfully. By expanding thoughtfully and sustainably, we aim to reach more people, tackle loneliness and isolation, and help communities build meaningful connections and ongoing support networks.

Independent examiner's report to the trustees of Food Friends UK ('the Company') I report to the charity trustees on my examination of the accounts of the Company for the year ended 31 October 2025.
Responsibilities and basis of report
As the charity's trustees of the Company (and also its directors for the purposes of company law) you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Companies Act 2006 ('the 2006 Act').
Having satisfied myself that the accounts of the Company are not required to be audited under Part 16 of the 2006 Act and are eligible for independent examination, I report in respect of my examination of your charity's accounts as carried out under Section 145 of the Charities Act 2011 ('the 2011 Act'). In carrying out my examination I have followed the Directions given by the Charity Commission under Section 145(5) (b) of the 2011 Act.
Independent examiner's statement
I have completed my examination. I confirm that no matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe:
- accounting records were not kept in respect of the Company as required by Section 386 of the 2006 Act; or
2. the accounts do not accord with those records; or

the accounts do not comply with the accounting requirements of Section 396 of the 2006 Act other than any requirement that the accounts give a true and fair view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination; or

Basis of preparing the financial statements

The financial statements of the charitable company, which is a public benefit entity under FRS 102, have been prepared in accordance with the Charities SORP (FRS 102) 'Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019)', Financial Reporting Standard 102 'The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland' and the Companies Act 2006. The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention.
Income

All income is recognised in the Statement of Financial Activities once the charity has entitlement to the funds, it is probable that the income will be received and the amount can be measured reliably.
Expenditure
Liabilities are recognised as expenditure as soon as there is a legal or constructive obligation committing the charity to that expenditure, it is probable that a transfer of economic benefits will be required in settlement and the amount of the obligation can be measured reliably. Expenditure is accounted for on an accruals basis and has been classified under headings that aggregate all cost related to the category. Where costs cannot be directly attributed to particular headings they have been allocated to activities on a basis consistent with the use of resources.
Tangible fixed assets
Depreciation is provided at the following annual rates in order to write off each asset over its estimated useful life.
Taxation
The charity is exempt from corporation tax on its charitable activities.
Fund accounting
Unrestricted funds can be used in accordance with the charitable objectives at the discretion of the trustees.
Restricted funds can only be used for particular restricted purposes within the objects of the charity. Restrictions arise when specified by the donor or when funds are raised for particular restricted purposes. Further explanation of the nature and purpose of each fund is included in the notes to the financial statements.
Pension costs and other post-retirement benefits
The charitable company operates a defined contribution pension scheme.
Contributions payable to the charitable company's pension scheme are charged to the Statement of Financial Activities in the period to which they relate.

Funds received from Kent Reliance Provident Society Community Fund and The Crown Charitable Foundation to fund additional management time to give us capacity to continue to scale our initiative and improve our impact monitoring framework.
Phillip and Connie Phillips Foundation Grant received to fund additional staffing time along with core costs to ensure we can continue to scale our home cooked meal sharing initiative.
