April 2023 - March 2024 Annual Report & Accounts The primary focus of the Trustee Board this financial year has been to reopen Deptford Park Play Club with a sustainable business model, after a period of recovery and resetting from the loss of Moira Kerranes the year before. At a high level, this plan involved the recruitment of new trustees, producing job role specifications and recruiting staff, and ensuring the Play Club was compliant and fit for purpose after a period of disuse. The board was keenly aware that we needed to get back to delivering on our charitable objectives, which are: For the public benefit to enhance the development and education of children, particularly but not exclusively, below statutory school age and to advance education, preserve and protect good health and provide leisure time facilities in the interests of social welfare for families in Greenwich, Lewisham and Southwark. With this goal in mind the first goal of the charity board was the recruitment of additional trustees. We were delighted to have Claire Russell and Laurentina Risch making a valuable contribution to the board from the beginning of the year, and Arezu Isats joined a couple of months later in June. This put our board onto a much stronger footing for key decisions moving forward. The board spent numerous months researching and developing the policies and processes that were needed to step into becoming employers. Additionally the local trustees volunteered relentlessly to empty the Play Club of accumulated equipment that was no longer fit for purpose (toys, spare clothes etc.,). Reusable items that Club didn’t need were sold at a fundraising Table Top Sale on October 15[th] , where the plan to recruit and reopen was advertised to the community. The Play Club was thoroughly deep cleaned. In December we welcomed our two new staff members to the team: Alev Carty and Kelly Butler. They spent the first month completing relevant training, promoting and preparing the Club, which reopened on 10[th] January 2024. It had been a long journey but we were all so pleased to finally welcome families once again into the wonderful space that is now colloquially known as “Moira’s Place.” Holiday play schemes were immediately launched again in February half-term and Easter holidays, and were very well received! It is with great pride that I report the return of Evelyn Parents Forum services to the community around Deptford Park in 2024. This is the beginning of a significant new chapter of sustainable service delivery and community engagement in our area, with a passion, as always to enhance the lives of children and their families in terms of health, development, and good fun! Amanda Hibbs Treasurer Evelyn Parent Forum 2022-23 Report & Accounts 1 ## Achievements and Performance In the three months that Deptford Park Play Club was fully functional this year, we can report it business as usual, delivering on all our objectives: ## Advance education We provided access to a range of activities such as painting, weaving, balancing, climbing, and team sports activities that aimed to develop fine and gross motor skills, social skills, arts appreciation and creative expression. ## Protect good health Every session includes music & movement or sports and provision of a healthy snack. ## Provide leisure Our sessions provided an opportunity to make new friends and enter new social groups. The peer-to-peer parenting support that is found at Play Club cannot be underestimated. Parents found rest and recuperation by bringing their children into such a supportive environment, while children had a lot of fun with new toys and new activities they probably couldn’t access at home. ## Financial Review This period’s financial results for Evelyn Parents Forum show a gain of £13,750 in restricted funding from the NCIL grant by LBL Lewisham, and an additional gain of £1205 in unrestricted funds. The Deptford Park Play Club was only open on an ad-hoc / hire basis from April through to December of 2023. Even with these arrangements the club hire and stay-and-play fees brought in £582. Whilst our outgoings for the year far exceeded our unrestricted income (being £5,740) this was due to a number of key expenses relating to bringing the Play Club back to an appropriate level of maintenance, safety and security. The fire alarm required an overhaul, for example. At the close of March 2024 the charity held just under £21K in bank account cash reserves, (plus almost £27K remaining restricted NCIL grant monies). We hold reserves in order to ensure services will continue in future years, even as grant funding may become more challenging. Our new staff team will take on some fundraising duties moving into the new financial year, however, our reserves help us to afford the transition to this model. We have confidence for the future of Evelyn Parents Forum’s continued contribution to the betterment of children’s outcomes in Lewisham, Southwark and Greenwich. Our treasurer is Mrs Amanda Hibbs, who prepared the accounts. ## Risk Management There is, of course, a risk of grant funding reductions in future, which we hope to mitigate with our staff team and a larger board of trustees, so more able to seek out and apply for funds, as well as promote the Play Club as a stay-and-play and hire venue. The trustees are also aware that safeguarding of young people is an ongoing concern. This year our most frequent volunteers and new staff members were enhanced DBS checked, which supports the Evelyn Parents Forum dedication to safety. It is worth noting that our stay-and-play setting is focused on peer-to-peer adult support to improve parenting/carer’s engagement with and support of their child(ren)s healthy development. Our staff lead activities that engage parents in working with their children rather than instructing children directly wherever possible.
