## October 2020 - March 2022 Annual Report & Accounts
This was a period of re-establishing our presence at the heart of Deptford Park, offering both safety and social opportunity to families and children. I would like to thank the whole trustee and volunteer team for going beyond the call of duty, even in this climate of uncertainty, believing that ‘together’ we would achieve our goals, namely:
For the public benefit to enhance the development and education of children, particularly but not exclusively, below statutory school age and to advance education, preserve and protect good health and provide leisure time facilities in the interests of social welfare for families in Greenwich, Lewisham and Southwark.
We delivered our services against the uncertainties of the pandemic and unfolding official guidelines for public meetings and service provision. As in the past, we offered vital support to children and families in the local community who experience multiple challenges, including those living with children with special needs, with very little support. But in these times our signposting and support was more important than ever! As families’ livelihoods and mental health have been so impacted by a year of Covid, our team (of both trustees and core volunteers) designed our holiday play-schemes and term-time schedule with this always in mind.
Our support enabled families to come out of a year of lockdowns and begin to safely engage with peers in their community, accessing learning and development opportunities. During term-time we opened for our pre-school stay-and-play with numbers restricted to twenty end-users per day for Covid safety. Young children and their older siblings, up to 11 years, were able to access additional activities in the school holidays. Evelyn Parents Forum acted as a Holiday Activities and Food provider for the London Borough of Lewisham Summer HAF Programme 2021.
Our activities this since October 20 have included provision of sports and dance coaching, and other gross motor skill development; art, craft and fine motor skill activities; sensory room; and opportunities to cook and bake as families. And all our activities provided opportunities for families to meet, interact, develop friendships and be a part of the community again.
We worked in partnership with statutory and community partners so families and children could access information, advice and additional support. I would like to thank our funders, recognising that their support has enabled us to deliver services which make a real difference to our families.

Summer giveaway bags prepped and ready to go July 21
## **FUNDED HOLIDAY SCHEMES**
16 days during July and August 2021, with 38 users registering to access HAF Free School Meal at Play Club. Capacity was strictly limited to 20 families each day, far fewer than attempted to access the scheme. Due to the restriction we provided 100 activity giveaway bags for “overflow” users to enjoy in the open space of Deptford Park.
3 days during October Half Term 2021 once again oversubscribed as restricted to 20 families each day.
3 Days February Half Term 2022 also oversubscribed as restricted to 20 families each day.
## **TERM-TIME STAY-AND-PLAY**
Doors opened Monday, Wednesday and Friday (working with volunteer availability and allowing for thorough cleaning between sessions).
## **HIGHLIGHTS OF 2020-22**

## **OUTCOMES:**
## **Advance education**
We provided access to a range of activities such as cooking, dance, drumming, weaving and team sports activities that aimed to develop fine and gross motor skills, social skills, arts appreciation and creative expression. Cooking activities additionally enhanced mathematical skills like number recognition while measuring and understanding comparative vocabulary (e.g. full / empty).
We also supported parents to access courses to enhance their parenting, budget better and make healthier choices. Additionally, by promoting and discussing local activities such as the Clean Air Campaign parents and volunteers engaged with important issues, learning new facts that impact life choices.

## **Protect good health**
The physical activities at Play Club gave children the opportunity to raise their heart rates, stretch/use their muscles and get some fresh air. Every session included music & movement or sports and provision of a healthy snack. Cooking activities always involved low-sugar recipes and promotion of balance wholesome nutrition. We also have posters around the Club explaining the impact of sugar on teeth, the balanced plate / food pyramid principles etc., and our volunteers are always willing to engage in conversations about recipes, reducing animal product consumption, low-cost-high-nutrition ingredients etc.,
## **Provide leisure**
Our sessions provided an opportunity to make new friends and enter new social groups. The peer-to-peer parenting support that is found at Play Club cannot be underestimated. Parents found rest and recuperation by bringing their children into such a supportive environment, while children had a lot of fun with new toys and new activities they probably couldn’t access at home.

## **Financial Review**
This period’s financial results for Evelyn Parents Forum show a minor loss of £138 in unrestricted funds. Bearing in mind how restricted our visitor numbers have been due to “living with Covid” this year, this is quite a success.
We spent all restricted funds for 2021-22 according to their required allocation. This included funds granted by (DCT) London Community Fund for a play worker, which we were limited to spend between June 2020 and June 2021! This meant we were able to open our doors three days a week from April 2021 with the staffing we needed to put in place the Covid safety measures necessary, and ensure our sessions met our goals. Additionally we received funding grants from SELCHP (£2,600). This grant helped pay bills and ensured our doors stayed open during term-time after our DCT Grant Funding had been exhausted. We were also awarded funding from the London Borough of Lewisham (£4,800) which was used to deliver our fantastic holiday play schemes this during the period, specifically partnering as a Holiday Activities and Food Provider in summer of 2021. To keep users safe we restricted numbers and maximised use of our fantastic undercover outdoor area. However, even with the ongoing user restrictions we raised over £3,600 through personal donations, daily stay-and-play fees and sales of hot drinks/snacks.
At the close of March 2022 the charity held just over £25K in bank account cash reserves. We hold reserves in order to ensure services will continue in future years, even as grant funding may become more challenging. The Evelyn Parents Forum aspires to take on a permanent employee in the next three years who will co-ordinate play services, but also have responsibility for fundraising. Our reserves will help us to afford the transition to this model. We have confidence for the future of Evelyn Parents Forum’s continued contribution to the betterment of children’s outcomes in Lewisham, Southwark and Greenwich.

Risk Management
In addition to the aforementioned risk of grant funding reductions in future, which we hope to mitigate with a dedicated staff member, the trustees are aware that safeguarding of young people is a particular concern as the nation adjusts to life post-lockdown. Some children and families experienced trauma and severe hardship during 2020, 2021 and may continue to do so. There will have been a significant mental health impact, which is only going to become clearer with the passage of time. The risk to the ongoing safety of our beneficiaries is still high and volunteers were reminded to stay alert and report concerns to Moira Kerrane, our safeguarding lead.

## **Structure, Governance and Management**
Evelyn Parents Forum is a CIO governed by a foundation model constitution. Trustees need to be nominated by a member of the existing board, and appointed by the board with a quorate vote. The trustee board are conscious that our Chair is also volunteering and on the board at the nearby 2000 Community Action Centre, with both roles taking a lot of energy and commitment. As such we are aware that additional trustees should be identified, to better share the burden of responsibility. Discussions to this end had begun at March 2022.
