The year has been s18nificant for the club as our Head Prgfe55ional of 25 years declded to retire with 3 mvnths
noticè and we had to urgently advertise and secure a replacement. This process was mobili5ed quickly and
e￿lIent successor was found in Darren Long who, wlth help from his club (Manchester T&RC) started promptly,
leaving us with only a two month gap. Thanks BO to our Assistant Profe55itsnal, Uoyd Pettiford, for brldging the gap
very ably.
Despite this interruptiort, court bookings for the year have been heatthy wf(h a welcome strengthenlng over last

Increasing utilisation, especially at weekends. A weekend membèrship category has been introduced to encoura8É

TRUSTEES, REPORT (INCLUDING DIREcfoRS' REPORT AND STRATEGIC REPORT) (CONTINUED)
FOR THE YEAR EhTDED31 DECEM8ER2024
Membership over the past year and through annual renewal in January has suffered with playing rnembership
ducing by I to 155 and Friends of the Court dropping by 6. The latter has been tsrgély due to deaths but both
have been affetted by the rising cost of living. Thi5 ha5 driven some to leave when playing less regularly or when
members of other clubs as well. Finding new members is a constant challenge and continue5 to be 100% through
existing member introdurtions. Increasing awareness of the gah)e through open days and creating the table tennis
lea8ue tearn has been positive but with little real effett.
The game of real tennis reoulres both physical and mental lstrategyl input and provides a longer playing life than
most other racket game5. We are pleased to 5UPPOrt many player5 Of retirement a8e, with over 25% being over 65
years of age.
The expanslon of the sportlng elements Into table tennis in the prior year ha5 proved worthwhile. with an
enthusiastic group of players competing In the 10¢31 lèague and achieving a mid-placed result. In February 2025.
the Space used for table tennis wa5 cleared to revert back to American Squash Tennis and an unofficial world
championship of this game was held for the first time in 10 years, w￿h the officlal world champion (from 19951
travelling from the USA to compete. The club boasts the only tt*urt In the world in regular use and are proud to
preseThe the court and game.
The historic building around the court continued to provide challenges. Roof leakage Into the Professional's
apartment durin8 siorms and repairs to window fTrmes and glazing havè been the focus of this year. We continue
to work on defining the longer term programme of building woyks to keep water out and heat in, usin8 the rèsults
of the buildlng survey done in 2021. A consultant has been engaged to specify this complex pro8ramme and then
secure 5uitsble contractor5 through a competitivè tender process in what continues to be a difficLsIt construrtion
supply chain situation.
Fundraislng for the buildlng programme u)ntlnues in parallel through events and grants. We have early promises
and havè won the opportunity to host the World Championship Doubles in April 2026, through which we hope to
attract sponsorship as well as revenue from ticket sales. Other fundraising events during thè tournament such as
an amateur compÈtltion, another Squash Tennis world champlonship, and a gala dinner are planned. A5 always.
volunteers from the membershlp do the work to deliverthese events and we are rellant on their eff(*ts.
As well as fundraising for exceptional expendlture. we have carried out a Inowl annual review of regular revenue
through subscriptions and court fees. These have been raised broadly in line with the inflationary effects seen In
our operatlonal costs. In addition, Gift Aid Continues to provide a valuable sour¢e of revenue.
Promotion of our ancient game as an excellent way of keeplng healthy is Central to our mission. We contlnue to
run a junior developmènt programme (with financial support from the Dedanists Foundation and building a list of
c. 25 junior players) and explo￿ ways to engage more with the local community to encourage awareness and
participation. Table tennis home matches have increased footFall of the unaware and we opened for the Heritage
Open Days again this year, increaslng to four days access where host volunteers introduce members of the public
to the game and its history.
