large business and industry estate,
Community Scrapstore was able to
substantially increase the number of
businesses that donated their re-usable
waste products to us. In turn, this led to
more variety in the scrap resources held
in our warehouse and more families and
community groups took out
membership as they recognised that we
were offering low-cost resources that
suited their particular needs. The
trustees increased the Scrapstore
Manager’s hours to a full-time role,
enabling the store to be open an

additional day per week. We provided affordable resources to over 100 local schools, nurseries and community groups, as well as over 300 families. Community Scrapstore played a leading role in increasing public awareness of environmental impacts and climate change by working with the organisers of North Somerset’s Climate Carnival, particularly by hosting ‘Make’ sessions where local community groups and individuals were able to select resources and make clothes and costumes from repurposed materials. The resulting fashion parade through the town attracted much praise. Our work in promoting the environmental benefits of reuse was boosted when Weston-super-Mare hosted the See Monster (a repurposed North Sea gas rig), as part of the national Unboxed arts festival. We provided resources that were used for educational purposes and ran a kitemaking day for families, which saw around 500 children making kites and flying them on the beach.

I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts for Community Scrapstore North Somerset (“the charity”) for the year ended 30 June 2023.

Responsibilities and basis of report

As the charity trustees of the charity you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (“the 2011 Act”).

I report in respect of my examination of the charity’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act.

Independent examiner’s statement

I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:

  1. accounting records were not kept in respect of the charity as required by section 130 of the 2011 Act; or 2. the accounts do not comply with these records

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
