This year, we opened an online-only bank account, which only accepts online payments, such as bank to bank transfers.
We also applied to several major high street banks to open a charity bank account and created an application to one of them that was still being processed as this report was written.

Trustees Annual Report for the year ended 8 August 2022
Baby Bumps present their second annual report and financial statements as a Foundation CIO (charitable incorporated organisation) for the year ended 8 August 2022.
Reference and administrative information set out above forms part of this report. The financial statements comply with current statutory requirements, the charity's trust deed and the Statement of Recommended Practice - Accounting and Reporting by Charities: SORP applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with FRS 102.
Objectives and activities
The trustees have referred to the guidance contained in the Charity Commission's general guidance on public benefit when reviewing the charity's aims and objectives and in planning its future activities. In particular, the trustees consider how planned activities will contribute to the aims and objectives that have been set.
Purposes and aims
Baby Bumps is a charity dedicated to the relief of sickness of babies from unexpected problems in pregnancy. Our mission is to improve the timely detection and accurate identification of prenatal and perinatal conditions which, without intervention, may result in harm, still-birth or neonatal death.
Our strategic areas of work for this period were:

About our fund-raising
No fund-raising activities were undertaken, so no monies were raised in this period. There was also no expenditure, so income and outgoings remain zero. Since we were not able to open a charity account with a major high street bank in this period, we focussed on activities that did not require funds.
Governance:
As a charity our governance relies on good communication between Trustees and we have continued to hold virtual meetings throughout the year, as well as meeting whenever practical.

Activities
Although the charity received no funds in this period, we continued to work in areas that did not require funds, or where tasks were performed without incurring cost.
• Research:
In the academic year, October 2021 – June 2022, we provided input and feedback for two projects in the field of fetal biosignals with communications and engineering students.
The first project looked at the system factors associated with the provision, especially the use of fast processors to develop the output. They managed to specify the appropriate use of the technology to provide a suitable platform.
The second was assessing sensor technology to measure the input signal for the system. A prototype was built and measurements taken, which indicated that this could be a potential sensor unit though only very limited testing was carried out.
Overall, both projects have improved our understanding of the current state of the art and certainly provoked some thoughts on next steps. Although, some of the big techology companies are pioneering health applications at a phenomenal pace, we think niche applications like fetal biosignals will continue to be a valid research topic.
• Current systems / Collaboration:
Dr Helena Gardiner is a member of the Maternal Fetal Adverse Event Terminology (MFAET) steering group. In Spring 2021, Dr Gardiner gave input into the writing of the MFAET guidelines to improve pregnancy trials and thus pave the way for novel therapies for women and babies. This was published in Autumn 2021.
MFAET is the first system to allow researchers and clinicians to systematically define and grade adverse events in pregnancy interventions using drugs or fetal therapy. It has been recently updated and aligned with MedDRA (Medical Dictionary for Regulatory Activities) and disseminated to their users group. It has also been presented to regulatory bodies such as FDA, MHRA who are keen for the terminology system to be adopted into clinical study protocols.
• Developments:
We continued to monitor developments in the field of fetal monitoring, including novel use of techniques or equipment and one area that we investigated was using fetal Doppler with enhanced analysis as a surrogate for fetal ECG. Overall, we felt that this method was limited but worth ongoing monitoring, especially as better computational techniques (“neural networks or artificial intelligence”) are likely to improve analysis.
Plans for the future
Currently, the charity’s research is done in collaboration with Universities, but does not support the students or department financially. In the future, we will assess whether we are able to provide financial support - for example, to facilitate the purchase of materials and consumables required for specific research in the field.
