Trustees Annual Report for the year ended 8 August 2021
Baby Bumps present their first annual report and financial statements as a Foundation CIO (charitable incorporated organisation) for the year ended 8 August 2021.
Reference and administrative information set out above forms part of this report. The financial statements comply with current statutory requirements, the charity's trust deed and the Statement of Recommended Practice - Accounting and Reporting by Charities: SORP applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with FRS 102.
Objectives and activities
The trustees have referred to the guidance contained in the Charity Commission's general guidance on public benefit when reviewing the charity's aims and objectives and in planning its future activities. In particular, the trustees consider how planned activities will contribute to the aims and objectives that have been set.
Purposes and aims
Baby Bumps is a charity dedicated to the relief of sickness of babies from unexpected problems in pregnancy. Our mission is to improve the timely detection and accurate identification of prenatal and perinatal conditions which, without intervention, may result in harm, still-birth or neonatal death.
Our strategic areas of work for this period were:

Research: Investigating ways to support the development of better (more practical, accurate and effective) equipment and techniques in fetal monitoring to further our mission, including working with research students in Universities

Current systems/Collaboration: Strategic collaborations and/or discussions about current systems, their limitations and potential improvements (e.g. training, updates)

Developments: Ongoing monitoring of developments in the field of fetal monitoring, such as novel use of techniques or equipment by new or existing organisations
About our funding-raising
No activities were undertaken and no monies were raised in this period. This was largely due to the Coronavirus pandemic, as high street banks suspended the process of opening a charity bank account. Without a physical account it is difficult to run and grow a charity, apply for grants, process expenditure or hold any meaningful events as physical cheques and cash cannot be processed.
Governance:
As a charity our governance relies on good communication between Trustees and we have continued to hold virtual meetings throughout the Covid pandemic.

Activities
Although the charity received no funds in this period, we explored ways to further our aims that did not require funds.
- Research: We wanted to work with research students in UK Universities to further our aims, as described above. One way to do this without funds was to provide potential areas of research and provide ongoing input and feedback research topics in the field of fetal monitoring and fetal biosignals.
The charity was formed and Trustees appointed at the end of October 2020, so was in a good position to engage with students in the academic year, October 2020 – June 2021. However, due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic there were intermittent closures and limited progress in research was made, but we were able to test out the processes involved, so that we would be in a better position for the following academic year.
- Current systems/Collaboration: We pursued some avenues of potential collaboration, led by Heena Dohdia.
We also held some internal discussions about the current use of Cardiotocography (CTG) and it seems apparent that current systems in the UK have limitations that could be improved through training (e.g. training or supporting local “champions”). However, we need more specific input on what training is needed and to engage with the Royal Colleges (e.g. RCOG) to avoid duplication. Myles Taylor will be our link to RCOG.
Helena Gardiner is a member of the Maternal Fetal Adverse Event Terminology (MFAET) steering group.
- Developments: We continue to monitor developments in the field through and one example was the development of fetal Doppler with enhanced analysis.
Plans for the future
In the academic year, October 2021 – June 2022, we intend to provide input and feedback for two projects in the field of fetal monitoring and fetal biosignals with communications and engineering students. Matt Thomas will be the main driver here.
One of our aims is to improve our understanding of the current state of the art and future research projects. Although, some of the big technology companies are pioneering health applications at a phenomenal pace, we think niche applications like fetal monitoring and fetal biosignals will continue to be neglected making them a valid topic for research.
