This circuit is one of nine in the Bristol Methodist District, which also covers most of Gloucestershire and part of both Wiltshire and Somerset. The minister appointed to Horfield has oversight of three other Methodist churches in the Circuit as well as Horfield, so about seventy percent of our acts of worship are led by one of his ordained colleagues or by a Methodist Local (lay) Preacher. We acknowledge the contribution that each of them makes to our core activity of Christian worship. ## **Year under review** The merger with nearby Bishopston Methodist Church, while maintaining a presence on both sites, has continued to face minor difficulties as processes and policies are streamlined. However, it is pleasing to note that individuals have become more involved in activities in the ‘other’ premises, such attending coffee mornings and participating in the outreach immediately before Christmas of singing carols from the steps of the building in a thriving high street environment. Community and outreach activities continue with Messy Church, Little Fishes (our toddler group), Film Club and coffee mornings. While there is no shortage of ideas for expanding community and outreach activities there are limitations as to what can be achieved with the volunteer-power available. There are fewer people willing to take on roles/responsibilities within the church and those who already do are fully committed. Regular worship activities are in full swing. The main Sunday morning act of worship at Horfield is hybrid, in person and online via the Zoom platform. Online congregants are invited to participate in acts of worship, for example by prerecording readings. Junior Church for children continues and the young peoples’ group, for those aged 11-18, re-started on a monthly basis. The church continues to be ecologically aware, and representatives from other Methodist churches in the area are part of the eco group, giving an opportunity to share best practice. The church offsets its emissions annually, has themed fund-raising events for eco projects and ensures that there are regular church services which focus on the environment and the climate crisis. The church has undertaken when serving food/drinks at any time to have a vegan/veggie option, a non-cow milk option and to use organic products from local outlets when possible and has become a Fairtrade Church. Junior Church children are aware of climate change and participated in the Climate Coalition’s initiative to make and give green hearts to the adult congregation in recognition of climate change. The congregation is very diverse and we are proud of offering a warm welcome to all comers. We are seeing new people attending which is testament to the welcome and demonstrates the ideals of the Inclusive Church movement which we joined in 2022. Once again, Horfield was faced with unexpected repairs, this time to a leaking roof. During investigations into this it became apparent that the ventilation tower was beyond repair and that taking no action would result in a serious health and safety issue in the near future. The ventilation tower was removed. We applied for grant funding towards the costs of this work and were fortunate to be awarded funds from both the Benefact Trust and The National Churches Trust. Maintaining ageing buildings, on both sites, after many years of basic repairs only is likely to continue to bring challenging decisions about prioritising expenditure. The church updated its Mission Statement in 2022. It was discussed at the annual Church Meeting to ensure wide communication. Discussion groups focussed on one area of Worship, Learning & Caring, Evangelism and Service and provided feedback, while the online group considered how the online experience could be improved.
