H&DMS Summary Report 2025
This our fifth year continues to be busy, having completed the Model
Shop last year, at the beginning of November I was able to secure after
a lot of research and help a very good quality second hand Metal Lathe.
which I found on the 'Gumtree' web site, a Myford Super Seven B, at
£2000.00 this included ten boxes of additional tools and adaptors for this
lathe, so at 4am on a cold November Monday moming, Ray and I went
in Ray's Van to Bristol on an eight hour round trip to pick up and load
lathe into his Van. The members who unloaded and assembled the
Lathe agreed we had found a litue used bargain lathe. this was funded
from the National Lottery Grant of £10000.00 I had secured earlier in the
year for the build of the Model Shop and equipment. Also. a metal
bandsaw was purchased this enhanced the model shop and gave us
good scope for future projects.
On the 23rd of November 2024 disaster struck. a large tree had been
blown down onto the top of our Shed by stonn 'Bertie' This put us out of
action for nearly six months. The roof had collapsed, broken many
Purlins, and bent one of the main support frames. Only a year and a half
previously we had sealed and painted the outside for longevity.
The Insurance took the longest to secure repair, but we did get all
necessary parts to repair Shed in advance ready for when we had the go
ahead from the Insuran brokers.
This did not deter us. and we continued on with what facilities we had
useable-, it was restrtcted in space and some members attended less
during this period.
They have a good working relationship with the building Companies in
Hunstanton building houses and flats etc. 'Bennetts' have been next to
us for some time and had been providing Pallets, excess timber, gloves,
and goggles. It was agreed when they had nearly completed that Estate,
they would give us all the unused intemal wood left over at end of build.
This they did and a large quantity of useful sizes of intemal wood was
duly collected with trailers by our willing team of tea and coffee drinkers
and stored under DPM in front of the quiet room.
'Bennetts' have moved to a new building estate in Snettisham and will
continue to supply us with excess materials etc. when available.
'Lovells' also had completed their build. and again we were offered a
selection of timbers. we selected a quantity of ten-foot x 8-inch x 3-inch
posts, these became particularly useful for replacing some of our Pur1ins
for repairs. Eight of the Purlins were required 3-inch x >inch, two Purlins
were cut from each plank. Ready for eventual repairs to Shed.
Hunstanton in Bloom made a request for us to make a mock-up of the
front of a Railway Engine 'The Fenman, to celebrate 200 years of the
Railways. Caringly made Kllth mindfulness of detail by Mark. Derek, and
Jim. This was to be plad in the Town Hall raised flower bed with
accompanying signage. Also. refurbishment of the odd socks caterpillar
for children to paint in the Esplanade Gardens, and additional Wooden
Slugs and Snails for the Sensory Garden again for children to paint. The
rotary club added the flowers later.
The heritage ntre requested refurbishment of the buffers at the Coal
Shed on the old railway bed. made by Derek B.
In addition, we were again asked to produ 14 presentation bowls for
the awards ceremony of Anglia in Bloom this year, we were prepared but
had to rush as we could not start production till the Shed was repaired.
These were made by Jim b. and Roger.
Again. this year Hunstanton in Bloom included our premises in the
Judges Walk round the town. We were commended as they were
impressed with our set up.
Culminating in Hunstanton receiving the Gold Award from Anglin in
Bloom committee.
Hunstanton Festival of Arts requested again this year for another set of
90 painted tiles by local school children. to be fixed to one of the
remaining two panels undemeath the day Chalets on the North
Promenade wall. This was completed by our established tea and coffee
drinkers Martin and Roger at the end of June.
For the last panel there was not enough tiles painted to install, to
complete this the local Artist Kate Dunbar invited volunteers from the
town to come and have a go on painting the remaining 40 tiles. Two of
our members Mark and Jim W attended and painted four tiles. They
received recognition of their skills coming first in all comers. This plaque
is displayed in the Quiet Room. The complete panel of tiles were
completed late in the year and will be fitted to the North promenade wall
next year.
During March we finally got the go ahead from the Insuran to rebuild
our Shed. This was done with gusto and enthusiasm by our industrious
members. The main support was straightened and welded at top for
strength. Purlins previously cut were replacing broken ones, the roof
panels carefully manoeuvred into place and fixed with bolt screws into
the Purlins. Once outside sheeting had been done the inside could be
insulated. rewired as essary and panelled up this took a few weeks
to complete before the intemal walls could be painted again. The outside
metal panels could not be painted for a further six months.
They decided to use this opportunity whilst rebuilding the Nissen Hut to
improve working conditions, two more benches were commissioned by
John L. with the original three benches tumed flat against the wall. This
gave us more working Spa to work around benches and achieve more
Spa so more members could work at the same time.
Also. a third wood lathe was added. with all the main equipment fitted to
one side of shed the bandsaw and wood processor put on lockable
rollers meant that now a new extraction system could be fitted. This was
funded from our car boot sales. l obtained consent from the Headmaster
of the School to assemble extraction unit outside beside the Nissen Hut.
this gave us more working space with a quieter environment. The noisy
extractor originally attached to wood pro$Or will be offered to other
sheds or disposed of.
We were asked by the Divisional Commander of the Scouts and Guides
to make two Victorian games. ball in the buckets and a photo booth this
had three dogs drawn on with the heads cut out by Mark these were
made by Roger and Jim. Delivered to their Clubhouse in Jimmy's Field.
August came and time to paint the repaired Nissen hut as six months
had passed, they had the new paint and corrugated rollers in stock
ready. The Nissen hut was painted in two halves length ways the garden
side first and two sessions later the drive side. When we first painted and
refurbished the Nissen Hut all the members took part some paintj'ng
some moving stones and deaning up or holding the ladders while the
energetic ones were painting. It was disappointing this year even after
asking everybody to help very few would even consider help with the
painting. The bulk of the painting was ably done by Martin. the others of
you who did assist thank you for your efforts.
The School made their usual request for some painting during the tem
breaks, During the spring half term we painted the first-floor corridor, and
in the Summer break we painted the second-floor larger corridor, these
were painted by Martin. Roger, Derek, Paul, Mark J, Mark R and Myself.
Again, this year we ran the Car Boots for the School. this year was
handicapped by the weather, rain. and cold winds so consequently
besides our best efforts it was a poor year for us.
We achieved only £1499.05 for the Shed and £4493.77 for the School
making the Total for the year £5992.82. Each year the Car Boots are
getting smaller. In our first year we achieved a total of £9708.67. There is
more competition these days plus the weather did not help this year. Let
us hope for a better year in 2026.
The Hunstanton Heritage Society requested hardwood mountings for
two presentation glass awards, these were ably cut. polished, and glued
to the glass by Louis.
The Town Council requested an EEf generator and Fireplace for the
Indoor Winter Wonderland Hub. which is in the basement of the Town
Hall. and opens to the public on the 30th of November These have been
caringly made by Mart(. Derek. Roger, Jim, and Dave.
This has not been an easy year for us. first it was the tree blown down
onto Shed. then Roy Wame and Myself have had major open heart
surgery, also wives and partners of our members with serious illnesses,
sadly Chris Hudds partner has passed away. rest in pea, Christine.
