H&DMS Summary Report 2024
Like the previous four years we have had a busy twelve months
improving and adding to our Shed complex, giving us more room, and
enabling us to set up more facilities.
By Christmas last year we had completed the conversion of the 'Royal
Landau, carriage to a 'Santas Sleigh. Wheels and superstructure removed,
new sides fitted and painted red, detachable skis fitted, beautifully decked
out with Christmas presents at the back, and mounted on six heavy duty
swivel wheels to manoeuvre and handed over to the Hunstanton Town
Council.
We have had many requests over the past twelve months from other
charities and businesses.
The Union Church asked for their Large Notice Board to be refurbished, it
had wood, Perspex replaced and repainted then reinstalled. Following this
they requested that the smaller noti board be repaired but was declared
unrepairable. So. a new noti board constructed, modified as requested,
painted, and installed.
They have since requested another noti board same as the last one for
the south side of the church. Due to our other commitments this has not
been made yet. Also requested were three chicken wire grids to keep
debris and ducks falling into basement areas, these were made and
installed.
Recently they requested a suggestion box which was duly made with oak
wood with green baize, by John and Jim.
The school requested could we assist again this year with making the
props for the school play. This year the play was 'Bugsy Malone, our expert
tea and coffee drinkers constructed all the required items for the play. the
set being so large the school could not accommodate it on their premises,
telephones. fire hydrant, boxing ring, tommy guns. bar, library, scenery flats
etc., were caringly made and transported to the Town hall, each night was
a sell-out. The Shed was commended for the contribution of the props.
Also, at Easter we were requested to paint the large dining area walls and
skirting boards during the summer holidays, and paint, fill and modify
staircase to dining room. Our experienced team of painters Martin, Peter,
and Paul. Completed this task.
Natural England approached us to see rf we could make some new signs
for the Norfolk Coast to display the local habitat birds, seals etc.. They
required fifteen large signs with two and four 3" or 4" legs 1500 - 1800mm
long posts. These were made with tanalised wood and marine ply for
durability. Our tea and Coff drinkers Derek, Roger. and Mark completed
these and Roger made two deliveries of the finished signs to Brancaster
with his horse box.
Hunstanton in Bloom gave us many requests who were preparing for the
Sixtieth Anniversary of Britain in Bloom, apart from repairing the odd socks
caterpillar made last year which is placed in the esplanade gardens. They
requested slugs, snails, and butterflies made in pallet wood about three feet
in size painted white with a black outline of the mollusc and insects. These
were mounted in the Sensory Gardens for the children to paint in colours of
their choi.
Following this was a request for an eight-foot front of a 1960's VW
Campervan made in wood and painted in blue and white with a Britsin in
Bloom 60 Number plate, the windows and liqhts were cut out and the VW
front mounted flat on stilts was installed in the Town Hall flower Bed. Flower
plants were placed in and around the VW cut out by the rotary club.
In addition to this we were asked at short noti to make the thirteen-
presentation bowls for the awards rernonY of Anglia in Bloom. the original
tree cut offs were unsuccessful as was the second delivery. The bowls split
overnight drying out. John found some seasoned strips of wood, glued, and
damped two sets of four pleS together. These were cut up into the
required thirteen bowls and made by Jim. some were produced in his
workshop at home due to time parameters.
These were warmly received and appreciated by recipients.
This year Hunstanton in Bloom included our premises in the Judges Walk
round of the town. although we have a wildflower garden and a series of
flower beds, bird box and bug box we were not exactly in pristine
presentation mode due to our building program of the new model shed.
Nevertheless, the Judges were impressed with the complex and our
conlributions to the town and presented us with a recognition award, which
is displayed in our quiet room.
We were invited to the Hunstanton in Bloom wrap up tea paty to hear the
Judges summary of the town's efforts. Paul, Jim, and l attended this
function.
Our efforts contributed to Hunstsnton reIving the highest award Gold,
award for best Coastal Town.
In March one our members married again, we clubbed together and sent
Norman and Verity a wedding gift. In the meantime. Norman has seriously
damaged himself walking the dog in the woods and tripping over. It is taking
several months for his recovery back to rude health. we look forward to
seeing him in the new year.
Also, in March the UK Men's Shed association erected a shed at Portcullis
House in the Pala of Westminster to raise awareness of men's wellbeing
and the Men's Shed Movement. All the UK sheds names were on display
for the MPS to view, a considerable amount of MP'S viewed the shed and
shed locations, our local MP James Wild did not know there was a men's
shed in Hunstanton. His PA contacted us and arranged a visit to our
complex on the 4th of April this year, he spent a few hours here with us
talking to many members, and a lot of you We in the group photo.
He enjoyed his visit and was impressed by our complex, which he
commented on in his ltter account, this was noted by the Chief Executive
of the national CITB at Bircham Newton.
There they have a division called the Construtionarium which has been in
operation over twenty years, fimis send their employees there for team
building, they form groups who are tasked with constructing a London
landmark in one fifth scale size. They are given five working days Monday
to Friday to complete in all weathers outside.
The Chief Executive Julia Stevens contacted us to ask if we would like to
visit the site and view a landmark near completion on a Thursday. Two
groups from our shed visited during June and July; the landmark being
constructed was the 'Shard.' This was interesting and informative on a cold
drizzly day" we were in full Health & Safety gear which kept us partially dry.
We chatted to the team who were building and finished with a hot cup of
coffee before departing. Julia Stevens mentioned to us at the end of the
season the wood used during the year is available for us to pick up for use
in the shed.
Last year we had a visit from the Long Sutton Men's shed. we said as soon
as we had a gap we would reciprocate. We visited their Shed in July this
year, they had a huge complex of three buildings. with many members and
a junior section for under eighteens. They had a lot of overheads for
telephone, heating, and electricity etc., It is always interesting to see other
sheds as they are all different to suit their members, also giving us ideas
we may incorporate into our shed.
In September Roger, Paul, and I visited Wayland Men's Shed for this years
'mardle' we met up with sixteen of the thirty sheds leaders in Norfolk. The
Wayland Shed is in a sports complex who have use of some huge rooms to
accommodate their eighty members, over fifty members attend only for tea
and banter, the rest meet in a small workshop which they hope they can
expand, we noted there quiet and efficient extraction system for these
machines which we may install similar in our workshop. We also had a
presentation on combatting loneliness and discussion, followed by an
enjoyable BBQ to finish the day.
The Hunstanton and District Festival of Arts requested again this year to
affix another set of ninety painted tiles by the children of the town to the wall
situated on the north promenade undemeath the day chalets. This we
completed on two rare sunny days. There are two of the nine panels left
which are blank. no doubt next year we will be asked to fill these panels.
Last year we were donated a considerable amount of metsl work
equipment with nowhere to instsll and use. This equipment is stored and
covered up in the main workshop to protect it from the sawdust. We spoke
to the Headmaster of the School to get approval to build another workshop
on our allotted site. which was approved. The project was costed up and
required about £8000.00 pounds with a further £2000.00 for additional
equipment and material. We applied for a £10,000.00 grant for this project
from the National Lottery in January this year, which was successful, and
the grant made available to us from March this year.
The new Model shop built by our industrious tea and coffee drinkers is
nearing completion, when the electrics installation is complete the
equipment and benches can be installed, this will help de clutter our main
workshop. Giving us a little more room to enjoy ourselves.
During the year we have had new members join but sadly one of our
trustees Bob Gillett passed away Saturday 27th April 2024, Bob fastidious in
his work contributions for the shed, we made a montage of Bobs exploits in
an album and gave it to Margaret his wrfe, who had constantly supplied us
with homemade cookies. asked for more pictures of our evening lebratiOn
of Bobs lrfe we had at the United ServIS Club to add to the Album, this
was done. Since Margaret has moved to be nearer her daughter. Rest in
pea Bob.
