Chair’s Report by Nicola Clegg for period Nov 2024 – end Oct 2025
At the beginning of this financial year, the BAVG were proud winners of the Voluntary & Community Group of the Year award at the Harborough District Community Awards. The judges were particularly impressed with the fact the charity is fully run by volunteers. A fantastic accomplishment for all the volunteers who make this possible.
Then followed a busy December, which included a well-attended lunch at the local White Horse pub and a festive luncheon for the residents from the now popular weekly luncheon club at the local school Thomas Estley. Our local crafting group also achieved a “specially commended” for their entry into the local Christmas tree festival.
To end the year and for the third year running the BAVG ran a Community Carol Concert provided for residents in the run up to Christmas. With the support of many volunteers the event was sold out and raised over £800 via a raffle and tombola which was then donated to the Salvation Army for its Christmas appeal.
On the 17[th] March the group celebrated its 5[th] anniversary since it was founded. The aim of the group was to support the wellbeing of vulnerable or isolated individuals during covid, and this continues to be the same but with the addition of creating local social community groups. All our volunteers were invited to a celebration evening at a local pub to be thanked for their contribution and acknowledge the milestone achieved.
To celebrate eighty years since VE Day, the group hosted an event at the village hall. 100 residents joined together to enjoy food, music and live entertainment courtesy of a local concert band. Local groups, including the Local Women’s Institute helped support the event, and the BAVG are very grateful for its ongoing local support and connections.
The BAVG continues to run 8 regular groups including a coffee morning which averages 65 people a week, 2 x kurling groups, knit and natter and art groups and a dementia coffee afternoon. The community allotment continues to thrive and a group of gardeners continue to help tend some communal areas in the village, along with dedicated litter pickers who are out whatever the season. The ongoing support from volunteers continues to make this happen along with other local support services including the Parish Council.
