Chair’s Report by Nicola Clegg for period Nov 2023 – end Oct 2024
To start off this financial year the BAVG website was relaunched. A new refreshed and improved website was developed to aid navigation to the relevant key focus areas. The remit of the group had changed since it was launched in 2020 and the refresh meant it was now better suited to the group's needs, especially as the site now had more regular visitors.
To help support local events, the group offered marshalling support for the Remembrance Day parade held annually in the village. In addition to marshalls to help the event run smoothly due to various road closures, first aid cover was also provided as several volunteers had been first aid trained by the BAVG.
For the second year running the BAVG ran a Community Carol Concert provided for residents in the run up to Christmas. With the support of many volunteers the event was sold out and raised a staggering £800 via a raffle and tombola which was then donated to the Salvation Army for its Christmas appeal.
The BAVG was invited to attend a community marketplace event in February 2024 alongside other local support services. This provided a great opportunity to promote all the work and services the group offers to a wider audience and gain more volunteers and interest in the services provided.
A dedicated and now established BAVG allotment team continued to develop and evolve its offering to the community. A second allotment plot was established to provide more opportunities and local groups now regularly enjoy visiting a children's play area which was created with a lot of hard work including support and funding from local businesses. The gardening groups continue to provide support to the village and even created a herb garden in the centre in an existing bed providing not only a focal point but herbs for the locals to help themselves too.
The local MP for Leicestershire South, Alberto Costa, visited the coffee morning group with the county councillor in March to understand more about the work done locally. The group has continued the relationship with them and both now regularly provide content and advice in the bi-monthly newsletter.
The BAVG took on the running of a previously run luncheon club at Thomas Estley Community College from April onwards. The club was relaunched offering a lunch served at the school for up to 24 residents on a weekly basis with a bus collection service too. This proved very popular from the start and continues to grow.
Working with one of the villages local pubs, the White Horse, a senior special lunch was also created to offer a monthly special meal with bingo for residents. This has been very well attended each month with an ever-growing number joining.
The BAVG continues to run 8 regular groups including a coffee morning now averaging 65 people a week, 3 x kurling groups, boccia group, knit and natter and art groups and a dementia coffee afternoon. The ongoing support from volunteers continues to make this happen along with other local support services including the Parish Council.
