RETIRED GREYHOUNDS SOUTH LAKES LIMITED TRUSTEES' REPORT for the year ended 31 March 2023

The Trustees, who are also directors of the Charity for the purposes of the Companies Act 1985, are pleased to present their Report and the Financial Statements for the year ended 31 March 2023. The trustees have adopted the provisions of the Statement of Recommended Practice (SORP) "Accounting and Reporting by Charities" (FRS102) in preparing the annual report and financial statements of the Charity.

Objectives

The Charity is a charitable company limited by guarantee and was incorporated on 28 April 2020. It is governed by a Memorandum and Articles of Association. The Company was registered as a charity on 13 October 2020.

The Charity's objectives are the fostering, adoption, homing and public awareness of ex-racing greyhounds that have retired from racing due to age, injury or inability. It achieves these objectives by providing veterinary attention and treatment for greyhounds that require it; providing sanctuary for abandoned, unwanted or retired greyhounds; providing sanctuary for those greyhounds with medical or behavioural issues; arranging careful and responsible homing of greyhounds; arranging and supporting foster homes for greyhounds; plus the advancement of education of the general public in matters relating to greyhounds as family pets.

The Trustees have considered the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit and, to achieve this, encourage and give careful consideration to its objectives. The Charity relies on grants and donations to cover its operating costs.

The strategies employed to achieve the Charity’s aims and objectives in the last year are set out in the Review of Activities below.

Review of Activities & Financial Information

Since the Charity was formed, Jenny and Stuart Stott have continued their previous activity of fostering and homing retired greyhounds which they started doing in 2004 under the auspices of other greyhound homing charities. In the period under review, 56 (2022: 72) new dogs arrived prior to 31/03/23 and 56 (2022: 69) were homed. Unfortunately, 1 (2022: 1) passed away through serious illness and 0 (2022: 2) were put into long-term supported care. 5 (2022: 5) remained on 31/03/23 who were still looking for homes and 1 dog remains in long term foster care.

The results of the Charity's activities are contained in the attached financial statements.

Income Generation

In the year to 31/03/22, a grant was received of £2,300 towards the cost of CCTV equipment. In 2020/21, an animal ambulance worth £16,750 was donated to the Charity by two of the Trustees. Both of these grants have been treated as restricted grants. Unrestricted grants totalling £15,925 (2022: £10,082) came from donations, collection tins, a legacy and a memorial trust. £17.896 (2022: £18,570) was received for adoption, homing and transfers of ownership charges. Bond transfers from the Greyhound Board of Great Britain totalled £16,900 (2022: £22,400). Sales of merchandise and receipts from various fundraising activities totalled £19,648 (2022: £16,650). Therefore, including £18 (2022: £10) received in interest and cashback, a total of £70,677 (2022: £70,012) was received towards the Charity's activities.

Resources Expended & Services

The cost of merchandise sold and fundraising activities was £8,572 (2022: £7,281). The largest cost incurred was £26,454 (2022: £26,223) for various veterinary treatments. Kennelling and fostering cost the Charity £14,650 (2022: £12,483). Some dogs were received which had not been bonded. Therefore to receive the full bond funding grant from the GBGB £1,100 (2022: £2,600) was paid to GBGB for bonds on these dogs. Support and Governance cost the Charity £12,622 (2022: £13,056).

Reserves

The Charity made a surplus of income over expenditure of £1,839 (2022: £1,911) which is carried forward for future charitable activity.

RETIRED GREYHOUNDS SOUTH LAKES LIMITED NOTES TO THE ACCOUNTS for the year ended 31 March 2023

  1. Statement of Accounting Policies

  2. Retired Greyhounds South Lakes Limited is a charitable company limited by guarantee in England and has no share capital. In the event of the Charity being wound up, the liability in respect of the guarantee is limited to £1 per member of the Charity. The address of the registered office is given in the Charity information on page 1 of these financial statements. The nature of the Charity’s operations and principal activities are given in the Trustees Report.

The Charity constitutes a public benefit entity as defined by FRS102. The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS102) (effective 1 January 2015) - Charities SORP (FRS102), the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS102) and the Companies Act 2006. The Charity has adapted the Companies Act formats to reflect the special nature of the Charity’s activities.

The financial statements are prepared on a going concern basis under the historical cost convention. The financial statements are presented in sterling which is the functional currency of the Charity and rounded to the nearest £.

The principle accounting policies adopted in the preparation of the financial statements are set out below. These policies have been consistently applied to all financial periods presented unless otherwise stated.

a) Fund Accounting

Unrestricted funds are funds which are available for use at the discretion of the trustees in furtherance of the general objectives of the Charity and which have not been designated for other purposes.

Restricted funds are funds which are to be used in accordance with specific restrictions imposed by donors or which have been raised by the Charity for particular purposes. The cost of raising and administering such funds are charged against the specific fund. The aim and use of each restricted fund is set out in the notes to the financial statements.

b) Income

All incoming resources are included in the SOFA when the Charity is legally entitled to the income and the amount can be quantified with reasonable accuracy. For legacies, entitlement is the earlier of the Charity being notified of an impending distribution or the legacy being received.

For donations to be recognised the Charity will have been notified of the amounts and the settlement date in writing. If there are conditions attached to the donation and this requires a level of performance before entitlement can be obtained then income is deferred until those conditions are fully met or the fulfilment of those conditions is within the control of the Charity and it is probable that they

c) Expenditure

All expenditure is accounted for on an accruals basis and has been classified under headings that aggregate all costs related to the category. Where costs cannot be directly attributed to particular headings they have been allocated to activities on a basis consistent with use of the resources.

d) Use of Volunteers

The Charity relies on volunteers who carry out a wide range of work free of charge apart from the costs of training and reimbursement of travel expenses. The donated services of volunteers in the course of undertaking the charitable and income generating activities is not recognised within the Statement of Financial Activities as it is impractical to place a value on these services.

  1. Transactions with Trustees and Connected Persons

Trustees are not remunerated. No travel expenses were paid to Trustees in the accounting period

In 2020/21 two of the Trustees, S A & J E Stott, donated an animal ambulance (which they had used previously in their greyhound rescue activity) to the Charity. The value of the gift was £16,750.

Two of the Trustees, S A & J E Stott, were credited with £9,808 (2022: £8,036) towards fostering costs in their home. The charge for fostering was approved by the other Trustees and Management Committee without the attendance or vote of Mr & Mrs Stott. However £14,123 (2022: £9,276) of these costs and other expenses paid for by them, had not been paid to them at the period end. Therefore it is included in creditors. The creditor owing was paid within 12 months of the period end.
