MISSION STATEMENT To relieve the charitable needs of children aged 0-17 who have germ cell cancer and other forms of cancer.

Structure, Governance and Management

The Charity was constituted by Trust Deed on 21 September 2020 and registered with the Charity Commission under Charity Number 1191761.

There are no employees and the Trustees carry out the administration.

Public Benefit, Charitable Objectives, Aims and Policy

The objects of the charity are:

  1. To relieve the charitable needs of children aged 0-17 who have germ cell cancer and other forms of cancer by:

a) Supplying gifts and items to those children and where appropriate their siblings;

b) Raising awareness of childhood cancer and working with other registered children's charities to do the same;

c) Providing grants to pay or contribute towards a holiday for such children and their immediate families.

  1. To preserve and protect the physical health of children who have germ cell cancer and other forms of cancer by providing grants for research into childhood cancer and in particular, germ cell cancer.

Reporting Serious Incidents

The Trustees can confirm that there have been no 'serious incidents' to report in the year ended 5 April 2022 as defined by the Charity Commission in their Guidance for Trustees issued 1 March 2012 and as updated 3 May 2018.

Objectives

The general objectives of the charity, as set out in the Trust Deed, have been applied by the Trustees, in order to support Cancer Charities and individuals with cancer. This is achieved by making grants to Cancer Charities and individuals, purchasing gifts and items for children with germ cell cancer and other forms of cancer and fundraising events in order to raise awareness of childhood cancer. Aoife's Bubbles made the following grants to Charities and individuals during the period ended 5 April 2022:

Activities undertaken for the public benefit

We are extremely proud to have an extremely well established working relationship with the Institute of Cancer Research. We welcomed an invitation to visit the research labs in April 2022 to view the work the researchers are undertaking in regards to the E-SMART childhood cancer trials.

Aoife’s Bubbles Charity has successfully benefitted the public through the past year by:

Proudly hosting regular awareness stands and distributing GCT & childhood cancer awareness information, being the UK’s only childhood cancer charity to raise awareness of GCT in children.

Funding respite trips in the UK for children in cancer treatment and their families, ensuring that all trips are covid safe.

Supplying birthday gifts to children at Great Ormond Street Hospital while having their treatment as an inpatient on their birthdays.

The trustees always act in accordance with the Charities Act 2011, to undertake due diligence to the Charities Comission general guidance on public benefit. The objectives and activities to achieve this are always the forefront of Aoife’s Bubbles Charity trustees delivery GCT and childhood cancer awareness, providing acts of joy and respite to children and their families affected by childhood cancer and having provisions to support GCT research.

Moving forward, the trustees aim to keep running costs to a minimum to enable funds raised to be spent on supporting children across the UK with a cancer diagnosis and to continue, raising lifesaving childhood cancer awareness.

Payments are made direct to the various Establishments and all applications have to be proposed by the Establishments.

Achievements and performance

Aoife’s Bubbles Charity are extremely proud of the achievements throughout the year ended 5 April 2022.

We have been able to send birthday packages to children having their cancer treatments as inpatients at Great Ormond Street Hospital. We chose to send these packages to Great Ormond Street Hospital as Aoife passed away on the oncology wards here. We are aware that they are re-fitting their playrooms and felt the resources were put to best use there at this time. Moving forward the Trustees would like to start focusing their attention to a more local level.

Throughout the year we were keen to ensure that children in the community were not forgotten and we are pleased to have sent packages, vouchers and character visits to children’s homes to spread acts of joy.

We are proud to have provided respite vouchers for families to book breaks and days out at their own leisure, and in their own safe bubbles when considering the contraindications of travelling with covid and children in treatment.

Post Covid the Trustees believe that a safe way to educate the wider public on symptom awareness is to use social media platforms to spread GCT awareness, as well as awareness of all forms of childhood cancer and found our reach to be particularly informative and useful.

Bubbles is our Charity's mascot and she is Aoife’s miniature pony, Bubbles. Bubbles is now the therapy pony for the charity and we are pleased to be able to take her to children’s hospices to make site visits for children in end of life care because of their cancers.

We believe at Aoife’s Bubbles, in ensuring we have face to face awareness drives and our annual charity ball is key to this. We were able to host over 230 people, and provide each person with information leaflets on childhood cancer and further details on our Charity's aims. We also hosted 3 tables of bereaved parents of children with cancer and 2 families of children in active treatment.

Moving forward to maintain our effectiveness, we would like to establish links within the local hospital settings on a national level to ensure every child in local settings can make contact with Aoife’s Bubbles Charity. Through this they will be able to apply for respite breaks and care packages while in a local hospital.

Financial Review

In summary in 2021/22: Expenditure on Grants totalled £6,750 (2021:£13,750). Voluntary Income was £71,487 (2021: £58,145), consisting wholly of donations received. Total funds carried forward were £13,368 as at 5 April 2022 (2021: £13,025), consisting wholly of a cash balance at Barclays Bank Plc.

Fundraising has largely supported the awareness drive which we would like to carry forward into the year ended 5 April 2023. We are also working closely with consultants and clinical nurse specialists at Great Ormond Street Hospital to produce germ cell cancer specific training to be introduced in to the medical community as well as the general population.

Moving forward we would like to connect with businesses around the UK to equally fundraise with them and obtain corporate donations. We also wish to work mutually with businesses to raise the profile of childhood cancer, specifically GCT in children.

I report on the accounts of the charity for the year ended 5 April 2022 which are set out on pages 8 to 12.

Respective Responsibilities of Trustees and Examiner

The charity's trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity’s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144 of the Charities Act 2011 (“the Charities Act”) and that an independent examination is needed.

My examination was carried out in accordance with the General Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts and seeking explanations from you as Trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and, consequently, I do not express an opinion as to whether the accounts present a "true and fair" view. This report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.

1 BASIS OF PREPARATION

Basis of accounting

The accounts are prepared under the historical cost convention, modified to include the revaluation of Investments, in accordance with the Charities Act 2011.

2 ACCOUNTING POLICIES

a) Recognition of incoming resources

All incoming resources are included in the statement of financial activities when the charity is entitled to the income and the amount can be quantified with reasonable accuracy.

b) Donations

Donations are only included in the SOFA when the charity has unconditional entitlement to the resources.

Expenditure and Liabilities

c) Liability recognition

Liabilities are recognised as soon as there is a legal or constructive obligation committing the charity to pay out resources.

d) Charitable expenditure

Charitable expenditure comprises those costs incurred by the charity in the delivery of its activities and services for its beneficiaries. It includes both costs that can be allocated directly to such activities and those costs of an indirect nature necessary to support them.

e) Governance costs

Governance costs relate to the costs of the preparation and examination of statutory accounts, the costs of trustees meetings and cost of any legal advice to trustees on governance or constitutional matters.

f) Fund Accounting

General funds are unrestricted funds which are available for use at the discretion of the trustees in furtherance of the general objectives of the charity and which have not been designated for other purposes.

5 DETAILS OF CERTAIN ITEMS OF EXPENDITURE

a Trustees' remuneration, expenses and indemnity insurance

Eilish Flanagan, one of the trustees, received remuneration for secretarial services during the period ended 5 April 2022. This is detailed above in the support costs allocated to charitable activities.

No insurance was purchased to indemnify the Trustees against any default on their part.

The charity had no employed persons during the year and therefore no employee earned £60,000 p.a. or more.
