Our current focus is Vizsla Inflammatory Polymyopathy (VIP) – and this has been the subject of an ongoing research project. In 2022 Manchester University confirmed that they will no longer be sponsoring and partially funding this work. The news was not surprising given the downward trend in research funding generally. Our priority now must be to safeguard and consolidate the work that has already been done and thereafter to engage alternative research interest. To this end we are in discussion with the Kennel Club Genetics Centre, at Cambridge University. The year also brought with it the opportunity to liaise with the Kennel Club on the subject of the UK Vizsla’s most significant health problems, both in terms of impact and prevalence. These discussions, jointly with the Breed Health coordinator, resulted in significant revision of the KC Vizsla Breed Health and Conservation Plan. The purpose of this project is to ensure that all health concerns for a breed are identified through evidence-based criteria, and that breeders are provided with useful information and resources to support them in making balanced breeding decisions that make health a priority. The revised Vizsla BHCP was published in early 2022 – and it clearly sets out the priorities and action to be taken both by the Breed Clubs and the Kennel Club in order that concerns can continue to be monitored and addressed.
