# **Just-Ice Poynton Trustees’ Annual Report** **For the period 1st January 2024 - 31st December 2024** During 2024 we have been privileged to support eight individuals who have experienced modern slavery and human trafficking, including two young men who graduated from our two year employability programme during the year. It was a great encouragement to see them moving on to mainstream employment and continuing to rebuild their lives after extreme trauma. **Figure 1:** Just-Ice Poynton supported eight beneficiaries on our Employability Programme in the café. We are grateful to anti-slavery charities Hope for Justice, The Medaille Trust, Causeway and St John of God with whom we have continued to work closely for the referral of survivors to our employability programme and for the training of our staff and volunteers. “Just-Ice came in when I needed them the most. What they stand for is truly inspiring and makes me feel seen.” Lynne - modern slavery survivor **Figure 2:** Four beneficiaries completed their level 1 food hygiene course, equipping them for future roles in hospitality. One of the individuals passed his driving test shortly before graduating from our employability programme. In 2024 we were able to improve and formalise the training we offer to our beneficiaries by creating training modules including Baking, Front of House and Cleaning. Each individual now has their own training and development file which they work on weekly, together with one of the Café Managers or Assistant Managers who is their mentor or ‘buddy’. We record our beneficiaries’ achievements in the training and development file. We have also continued to roll out our aim of being a gentle Christian presence in the heart of our community with initiatives such as our weekly ‘Keep In Touch’ drop-in coffee morning which helps tackle loneliness and isolation. Some of our ‘Keep In Touch’ ladies. At the start of the year we spent around £13,000 improving our high street café building, including the installation of a ‘story wall’ inside the café where we have taken the opportunity of displaying some anonymised testimonials from some of our beneficiaries about their experience working at Just-Ice. This, linked with a more proactive marketing approach throughout the year and the development and training of a volunteer ‘Speaking Team’ to speak about our work at community groups, schools and churches, has led to increased awareness of our work locally. In turn this has boosted our fundraising impact, with the financial benefit of this likely to be evident in 2025 and beyond. ## “I am very happy working at Just-Ice. There are many new opportunities and I’ve made many friends.” Richard - modern slavery survivor Another physical improvement was the fitting of bi-fold doors to the front of the café which has enabled us to serve ice cream to passers by on the pavement ‘Continental style’ and to extend our selling period to Sunday afternoons when the main café is closed. We saw a considerable increase in salary costs in 2024 due to the employment of a record number of survivors of slavery (who are paid the National Living Wage whilst on our employability scheme) and because the day to day café work previously done on a voluntary basis by our Chair of Trustees and another Trustee was redirected to two part time employed Café Managers, giving our Chair space to lead the trustees in developing some of the other new initiatives mentioned in this report. The investment in these improvements – all of which are bearing fruit – as well as other factors such as poor spring and summer weather (and therefore relatively low ice cream demand) explain the very small deficit showing in our 2024 accounts. During 2024 we were able to grow our volunteer base to around 75 local people and introduce a more formal review procedure for volunteers to help them feel valued, supported and listened to. Our volunteers work in many areas including serving at the counter, baking, cleaning, driving, laundering our aprons, giving English tuition and providing IT support. We are grateful to Mrs Deborah Myers who stepped down as a Trustee during 2024 for family reasons but who was pivotal to the success of the project in its formative stages and early years. We are delighted that she continues to volunteer with us and we wish her well for the future. I would also like to thank our highly committed and hard working staff team, my fellow trustees, the Foundations and Trusts that have supported us financially, the churches, schools, community groups and individuals who have donated to us and fundraised for us and supported us in other ways and of course our service users for all the ways in which they teach and inspire us. ## **Joanne Rodman Chair of Trustees** ## Raising Awareness in 2024 **8** **Talks given to raise awareness of modern slavery and educate on spotting the signs. This resulted in 12 people signing up to our 25 for 25 Campaign generating enough to fund one survivor’s wages for 6 months.** **9** **Ice cream selling events with Harriet out in the community, which raised awareness and around £4,000 - enough to cover one survivor’s salary for half the year.** **12** **Private events and community groups hosted in the cafe which provided enough funds to pay an additional survivor for a year’s attendance on our Employability Programme.** ## Sales in 2024 ## **Between January - December 2024 we served:** **Including 486 family tubs. That’s 31,008 scoops of goodness that generated a profit of £55,000 to enable us to maintain the cafe as a supportive workplace.** **31,008 ice creams** **Including 8,977 cups of Blue Bear coffee. The profits on our purchase of this coffee went to the Blue Bear Foundation’s anti-slavery work overseas.** **11,415 hot drinks** **Including 703 soup & cheese scones and 280 quiches. These generated a profit of £12,000 which paid the annual salary and expenses of one beneficiary.** **4,217 lunches** **Including traybakes and sweet scones. The 3,112 income from these funded the wages of cakes another beneficiary.** **74 active volunteers** **Contributing 6,240 hours at a value of around £80,000. I report in respect of my examination of your charity's accounts as carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act. In carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act. ## **Independent examiner's statement** I have completed my examination. Accounting Policies** ## **1.1. Basis of Preparation of Financial Statements** The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention and in accordance with Financial Reporting Standard 102 section 1A Small Entities "The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland" and the Companies Act 2006. ## **1.2. Tangible Fixed Assets and Depreciation** Tangible fixed assets are measured at cost less accumulated depreciation and any accumulated impairment losses.
