Objectives & Activities
Summary of the purposes of the charity as set out in its governing document Para 1.17
For the public benefit, the relief and assistance of people in need in the Cheshire and South Manchester area who are survivors of modern slavery by supplying them with employment, training and education with a view to helping them become independent and meet their own needs.
Summary of the main activities in relation to those purposes for the public benefit, in particular, the activities, projects or services identified in the accounts.
During 2023 we were able to open our ice cream café for six days each week, thus providing a workplace and training environment for the survivors of modern slavery and human trafficking who we support. We also conducted a successful trial by opening for take away ice cream only (as opposed to the full sit-in café experience) on a Sunday afternoon and decided to introduce this as a regular feature during the spring and summer in future years to provide an extra income stream to help finance the cost of delivering our work.
Our mobile ice cream service continued throughout 2023 with Harriet (our ice cream trike named after anti-slavery activist Harriet Tubman) attending 25 ice cream selling events in the community. As well as raising extra income this proved an effective means of raising awareness of the issue of modern slavery.
During the year trustees and staff members visited 22 schools, churches and community groups to speak about our work and raise the profile of modern slavery as a current, urgent and growing issue. We also hosted 18 visits to the café by schools and community groups to enable people to hear about the Just-Ice vision and learn to spot the signs of modern slavery and human trafficking.
In the summer we took part in the Poynton Arts Festival, opening the café for a children’s art competition as another way of engaging the public with our work.
At the end of 2023 we undertook some refurbishment in the café including the creation of a ‘story wall’ which we feel makes our work more public in a sensitive and appropriate way.
Our managers have taken part this year in trauma-informed care training and been able to implement what they have learnt in the way they relate to our beneficiaries. We also established a monthly wellbeing group for our staff, facilitated by a volunteer family therapist who has led us in talking about our day to day work and finding strategies to overcome issues and problems so we can relate better to the beneficiaries we seek to serve.

Contribution made by volunteers
We have been privileged to work with over fifty regular volunteers during the year. Our volunteers are organised into four teams serving both our café and our mobile ice cream service and are a valuable part of our community. The charity has benefitted greatly from the input of our volunteers and our beneficiaries’ experience has been enriched by all that the volunteers bring to the Just-Ice community.
We estimate that the total number of volunteer hours during 2023 has averaged around 122 hours per week or 6,250 per year. Late in 2023 we introduced a volunteer review system in order to gather feedback, formally thank our volunteers for their help and audit skills that may be available but not yet deployed!
We also organised three social events specifically for our volunteers as a way of thanking them for their support and providing opportunities to cement friendships and a sense of community.
Achievements and Performance
Summary of the main achievements of the charity, identifying the difference the charity’s work has made to the circumstances of its beneficiaries and any wider benefits to society as a whole.
In 2023 we saw our first beneficiary, a young man who had been held in domestic servitude and manual labour exploitation here in the UK, ‘fly the nest’ and move on from our employability programme to live and study independently in the community. His progress was a cause for celebration and prompted us to be proactive in keeping in touch with our ‘graduates’ which we do by occasional video/telephone calls and by inviting them to our social events.
We continued to work closely with Hope for Justice and The Medaille Trust to receive referrals of five other vulnerable young people who had been rescued from modern slavery and were ready to engage with sympathetic employment in a ‘halfway house’ workplace such as Just-Ice, in order to prepare for eventual mainstream employment.
In the second half of 2023 we formed links with Causeway (formerly City Hearts), another large anti-trafficking charity, and received our first referral from them of a young man from Sudan who had been held in slavery in the Middle East.
These beneficiaries have been welcomed into our warm and caring community as Café Assistants where they have had opportunities to learn hospitality skills such as baking, food preparation, front of house, cleaning etc. as well as ‘soft skills’ including teamwork, communication and leadership.
It has been a joy to see these individuals blossom! On arrival in the café they were mostly withdrawn, sullen and suspicious, reluctant to form relationships and unable to trust. Over time they have relaxed, begun to engage and before long even smile! It has been particularly rewarding to hear two of our longest serving Café Assistants speak warmly and enthusiastically about the café community being their family and the café being a wonderful place to be!
During the year our beneficiaries have undertaken formal training such as Food Hygiene Awareness, Food Hygiene Level 1 and Allergen Awareness, as well as progressing through our in-house employability training programme at their own pace. They have also taken part in social events such as our Christmas party and summer afternoon tea and have had many opportunities to engage with the public when we have hosted community events such as the monthly Poynton Networking Lunch and the weekly ‘drop-in’ coffee morning, as well as serving the public during normal opening hours.

Independent Examiner's Report to the trustees of Just-Ice Poynton
I report to the charity trustees on my examination of the accounts of Just-Ice Poynton for the year ended 31 December 2023
Responsibilities and basis of report
As the trustees of the charity, you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 ('The 2011 Act').
I report in respect of my examination of your charity's accounts as carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act. In carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.
Independent examiner's statement
I have completed my examination. I can confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination which give me cause to believe that, in any material aspect:

accounting records were not kept in accordance with section 130 of the 2011 Act; or
-
the accounts did not accord with those records; or
• the accounts did not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a 'true and fair' view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination; or
- the accounts have not been prepared in accordance with the Charities SORP (FRS 102).
I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

1. Accounting Policies
1.1. Basis of Preparation of Financial Statements
The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention and in accordance with Financial Reporting Standard 102 section 1A Small Entities "The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland" and the Companies Act 2006.
1.2. Tangible Fixed Assets and Depreciation
Tangible fixed assets are measured at cost less accumulated depreciation and any accumulated impairment losses. Depreciation is provided at rates calculated to write off the cost of the fixed assets, less their estimated residual value, over their expected useful lives on the following bases:
