Trustee selection methods - (eg. appointed by, elected by) ## **Additional governance issues (Optional information)** You **may choose** to include additional information, where relevant, about: - policies and procedures adopted for the induction and training of trustees; - the charity’s organisational structure and any wider network with which the charity works; - relationship with any related parties; - trustees’ consideration of major risks and the system and procedures to manage them. ## **Section C Objectives and activities** **Summary of the objects of the charity set out in its governing document** The objects of the charity (‘the objects’) are: - (1) To advance the education of and to raise awareness among the general public and healthcare professionals in fighting all renal cancers in the United Kingdom and in particular, but not exclusively, the subtype Renal Medullary Carcinoma (RMC). - (2) To raise funds in order to advance research into renal cancers (as in (1) above) and to provide equipment and treatment for the March **2012** **TAR** 2 same for sufferers of such medical conditions residing permanently or temporarily in the United Kingdom through the provision of financial assistance, support, and practical advice as the trustees see fit from time to time. - (3) To relieve the sickness and preserve the health of people suffering from renal cancers (as in (1) above) and improve and extend the quality of life of people living with renal cancers (as in (1) above) who are permanently or temporarily in the United Kingdom and to support the families of such people in the event of hardship as the trustees see fit from time to time. - (4) To provide and assist in the provision of facilities not normally provided by the statutory authorities as the trustees see fit from time to time in order to support and promote the health and rehabilitation of firefighters across the United Kingdom. ## **D** The Ricky Casey Trust was founded in 2020. We are the only charity in the UK to represent rare renal cancers with a particular focus on RMC (Renal Medullary Carcinoma), this type of cancer has links to the sickle cell trait. Below is a summary of our main charitable activities during the specified reporting period: ## **Changes to Charity Personnel:** We have received the resignation of one of our trustees due to personal and work commitments. We will be looking to replace him as soon as possible. ## **Education / Networking Activities** As part of our collaboration with the Chris CJ Johnson Foundation (see fundraising activities below), Nicola Casey has introduced another UK patient with RMC to the wider support network. This is the home for virtual peer-to-peer support groups for RMC, and has guest speakers to provide answers, advocacy, education, support, and navigation to empower people living with RMC. The patient has found this to be a great source of help to speak with other RMC sufferers. Dr Msaouel, a Physician-Scientist and Oncologist at the MD Anderson Centre in Houston Texas is dedicated to research surrounding RMC and continues to share his knowledge and experience in RMC with physicians in the UK. Nicola Casey (CEO & Founder) was invited to do an interview on Granada Reports with Becky Morris, daughter of the late news reporter Tony Morris who died from a rare renal cancer. Becky was running in memory of her dad at the London Colour Obstacle Rush and wanted to raise awareness and funds for the Ricky Casey Trust. Following this, through the interview the charity was contacted by a member of the public whose husband had signs and symptoms and requested support. Through previous events, a meeting took place with the Health & Care Leader for Oldham and we were connected with various Health Care professionals across Greater Manchester leading to a meeting with the Clinical Lead for Urology. We attended an AnswerCancer conference where we met with Salford March **2012** **TAR** 3 CVS who advised us to apply for potential funding to help with our upcoming awareness events in the community. Two of the trustees completed the grant application which was successful which enabled us to provide leaflets for presentations for 2 events. One was at our local football ground, Oldham Athletic FC as we had been chosen for their dedicated Charity Spotlight Event and the other was at a Black Man Health Awareness evening which encouraged some of those who were not aware of their status to be tested. We have also attended other local support groups and raised awareness. We also met with the CEO of the Sickle Cell Care Manchester and the Lead Nurse Practitioner of the Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia Centre Manchester who were very keen to collaborate in joining forces and raising awareness of the connection with Sickle Cell and RMC. Through this connection we were invited to be part of the North West Sickle Cell Patient Event. We met other organisations who were interested in The Ricky Casey Trust holding an awareness event within their organisation. We were invited to bid for a donation from another local charity (Saddleworth Round Table) in which we were successful and this helped cover the cost of providing charity t-shirts for our other upcoming events. The Ricky Casey Trust is currently in the process of contributing to a GP training module (Gateway C) highlighting signs and symptoms of RMC, Nicola Casey has shared Ricky Casey’s journey and treatment as part of this module. Tom Waddell our trustee and Oncologist at the Christie Hospital was interviewed and key points was summarised to help to improve investigations after a patient’s first presentation to a GP and hopefully reduce missed or misdiagnosed cases in general practice. Nicola Casey our CEO & founder was nominated as one of Inspirational Women of Oldham. ## **Fundraising Activities:** The Virtual Walk that was developed in collaboration with the Chris CJ Johnson Foundation in Houston Texas continues to be our annual ‘Keepin it Renal’ event. Our 2024 virtual walk began on 6[th] March which is Ricky Casey’s birthday and ran throughout the month of March which is also kidney cancer awareness month. People set themselves their own challenges throughout the month. On 23[rd] March our trustee Lee MacAllister and friend Glyn Billington led a group to walk from Blackpool FC to Springhead FC in Oldham. This was a 54 mile walk that was completed in 22 hours and was to commerate Ricky’s 54[th] birthday. They were also supported by a local cycle team and some of other trustees joined at various points in the walk. This was a huge success and raised much needed funds. The event was documented by RAM Films. A new t-shirt was designed and printed for this event with a QR code printed on the t-shirt thereby adding another way to collect donations. Our Annual Charity Ball was held on Saturday 9[th] March 2024. This was again a great success with full capacity of 200 attendees. We secured and received 3 sponsorships for the event. The evening was hosted by professional MC Alan Keegan (the voice of Old Trafford and EA Sports FIFA). Various fundraising activities were conducted during the evening including a raffle and charity auction. This annual event forms one of our key recurrent fundraising opportunities as a charity. March **2012** **TAR** 4 We have had more individuals this year wanting to get involved with the charity in taking on their own personal challenges and raising more funds and awareness in doing so: - Marathon in Perth Australia - Ultra marathons, half marathons and 10k runs - 54 mile walk - Charity evening including comedy night and tapas evening - Vintage Car Auction and profit divided between The Ricky Casey Trust and 2 other local charities - Virtual Cycle rides - 3 Peaks & Snowden - Tough Mudder - Charity Football Match - Xmas Santa Dash In December 2023 we continued with our virtual Christmas card. ## **Patient / Carer Support Activities:** We are able to provide support and assist with our main objectives. ## **Administrative Activities:** TEXT RICKY platform set up ## **Summary:** As summarised above the charity has carried out a wide range of activities towards its purpose of public benefit.
