The objects of the charity (‘the objects’) are:
- (1) To advance the education of and to raise awareness among the

- **charity set out in its** cancers in the United Kingdom and in particular, but not
- **governing document** exclusively, the subtype Renal Medullary Carcinoma (RMC).
- (2) To raise funds in order to advance research into renal cancers (as in (1) above) and to provide equipment and treatment for the

same for sufferers of such medical conditions residing permanently or temporarily in the United Kingdom through the provision of financial assistance, support, and practical advice as the trustees see fit from time to time.
- (3) To relieve the sickness and preserve the health of people suffering from renal cancers (as in (1) above) and improve and extend the quality of life of people living with renal cancers (as in (1) above) who are permanently or temporarily in the United Kingdom and to support the families of such people in the event of hardship as the trustees see fit from time to time.
- (4) To provide and assist in the provision of facilities not normally provided by the statutory authorities as the trustees see fit from time to time in order to support and promote the health and rehabilitation of firefighters across the United Kingdom.
The Ricky Casey Trust was newly formed in 2020. We are the only charity in the UK to represent rare renal cancers with a particular focus on RMC (Renal Medullary Carcinoma), this type of cancer has links to the sickle cell trait.
Below is a summary of our main charitable activities during the specified reporting period:
## **Changes to Charity Personnel:**
We are pleased to welcome the addition of a new patron - Jamie JonesBuchanan MBE. Jamie is a former professional player with Leeds Rhinos Rugby club. He is currently the club’s first Director of Culture, Diversity, and Inclusivity, and we feel that he is a great asset to the Trust. As Jamie also carries the Haemoglobin C trait, he feels that the charity is sending out a really important message and he is driven to become part of the voice for change and patient support.
## **Education / Networking Activities**

As part of our collaboration with the Chris CJ Johnson Foundation (see fundraising activities below), Nicola Casey has introduced a UK patient with RMC to the wider support network. This is the home for virtual peerto-peer support groups for RMC, and has guest speakers to provide answers, advocacy, education, support, and navigation to empower people living with RMC. The patient has found this to be a great source of help to speak with other RMC sufferers.
We have strengthened our connections with Dr Pavlos Msaouel at MD Anderson, Texas. Dr Msaouel is a Physician-Scientist and Oncologist and is dedicated to research surrounding RMC. A video meeting was arranged between him and the trustees to discuss the research and treatments in the USA, and he has offered to continue to share his knowledge and experience in RMC with physicians in the UK.
Nicola Casey and trustee Tom Waddell have raised awareness through T.V interviews with Granada Reports. The patient that is being supported was also involved in the interview wanting to share his story and experience living with RMC and wanting to thank the trust for their support. Nicola Casey offers and continues to give personal support when needed.
More awareness has been raised through the local newspapers.

A meeting took place with Nicola Casey and trustee Grace Widdall with the Centre Head at the local Maggies’s Centre to discuss our information leaflets being displayed. This was agreed.
Nicola Casey and trustee Tom Waddell were invited to a local business (Leads2Trade) to introduce the charity and its work to the employees. A video was shown which was followed by a Q&A session. This business has since been supporting the charity through a range of fundraising activities.
Nicola Casey and trustee Grace Widdall were invited to a local primary school in Oldham. The school had taken an interest in the charity and the children wanted to meet with us. The school delivered an educational talk regarding the charity.
As part of Kidney Cancer Awareness month in March 2023, and in collaboration with our annual ‘Keepin’ it Renal’ event, we contacted Oldham Metropolitan Borough Council (OMBC) and a local lighting events company to discuss lighting some of the well-known buildings in Oldham, orange. This was made possible and sponsored by the lighting company.
Nicola Casey has also made some new connections with OMBC, one being Councillor Amanda Chadderton who is the leader of Oldham Council. From these connections Nicola was invited to take part in a video interview with Councillor Amanda Chadderton for World Cancer Day in raising awareness of rare cancers and early diagnosis. A discussion took place about how the local council could help raise the charity’s profile going forward and to make some connections within the health sector.
## **Fundraising Activities:**
The Virtual Walk that was developed in collaboration with the Chris CJ Johnson Foundation in Houston Texas continues to be our annual ‘Keepin it Renal’ event. Our 2023 virtual walk began on 6[th] March which is Ricky Casey’s birthday and ran throughout the month of March which is also kidney cancer awareness month. People set themselves their own challenges throughout the month and the final day ended this year with a beer walk. This was a great success and raised much needed funds. A new t-shirt was designed and printed for this event with a QR code printed on the t-shirt thereby adding another way to collect donations. We also received sponsorship from local businesses and advertised them on our t-shirts.
Our 2023 Annual Charity Ball was held on Saturday 11[th] March at a larger venue than previous years. This was again a great success with full capacity of 220 attendees. We secured and received 3 sponsorships for the event from Taurus Security for the second year along with C&C Healthcare and Beautiful Productions. The evening was hosted for the second year by professional MC Alan Keegan (the voice of Old Trafford and EA Sports FIFA). Various fundraising activities were conducted during the evening including a raffle and charity auction. This annual event forms one of our key recurrent fundraising opportunities as a charity.
We have had more individuals this year wanting to get involved with the charity in taking on their own personal challenges and raising more funds and awareness in doing so:

- A family fun day was organized at the local football club along with Bands, DJ, Food van, Ice cream van, children’s bouncy castles and face painting. The local firefighters attended allowing children to sit on the engine. A raffle and auction took place.
- A Charity football match took place and Manchester Football League attended and presented us with a cheque.
Trustee Lee McAlister and a friend set and completed approximately over a 200 mile walk over 9 days starting at Springhead Football club finishing on Wembley Way London. They had various people joining them at different legs to encourage and support. A support vehicle was donated for the full event for safety of the walkers. A new t-shirt was designed for this event and sponsorship with provision of footwear, clothing and accommodation was provided by Berghaus, Regatta, The Hilton Hotel Group and others. The event route was provided by Leeds Beckett University courtesy of our patron Kevin Sinfield who was at the start of the challenge to show support. The event was covered by the Daily Mirror, Daily Star newspapers and the local paper. We also had videos of support from one of our supported RMC patients, as well as sporting legends Kevin Sinfield, Barrie McDermott, Kyle Hogg, D’mani Mellor and Jack Grealish. The Charity was nominated for the North West Residential Property Awards gala dinner to be the events charity of the evening. The Charity had to produce a short video for the 900 guests who then donated very generously. This was attended by Nicola Casey and trustee Grace Widdall.
In December 2022 we continued with our virtual Christmas card.
## **Patient / Carer Support Activities:**
We are pleased that our website is now clearly visible and working as we have had our second UK contact who has recently been diagnosed with RMC. We are now able to provide support and assist with our main objectives. The contact has already found the charity to be a great source of help.
## **Administrative Activities:**
Nicola Casey and trustee Grace Widdall have attended video training sessions to create a new fundraising platform to help with the smooth running of events such as the ‘Keepin’ it Renal’ event and any future fundraising events. **Summary:**
As summarised above the charity has carried out a wide range of activities towards its purpose of public benefit. We can also confirm that The Ricky Casey Trust trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the charity commission on public benefit.
