Objectives and Activities, Achievements and Performance
The objects of the charity are:
The prevention or relief of poverty in Beira and/or other areas in Mozambique by providing: grants, items and services to individuals in need and/or charities, or other organisations working to prevent or relieve poverty.
The organisation carries out its purposes by making grants to help individuals in need, either directly where the individuals need is verifiable by the trustees (for instance, providing individual medical expenses), or to trusted individuals or organisations who have demonstrated honesty and capability to manage grants for the good of the poor.
Charitable activities in 2021
Each month a list of needs is created by the local team of volunteers in Beira (see photo), and those needs which can be funded are agreed. 1 John 3:1718 Beira then sends the money. At the end of each month a report is received confirming how the funds were used, and providing photographs of the work, ensuring accountability.
The charity currently supports around seventy of the poorest people with food and fuel. We have built more than ten houses for those whose homes were demolished, and repaired many more. We support nursing students, apprentices, and those doing short term courses (IT, electrician, baking). We have provided business loans to around ten
people. We have provided nearly a hundred fuel efficient stoves and planted over fifty trees.

Meeting immediate needs
The local team are passionate to improve the chances for the poor. At the most immediate level this involves providing food, fuel and medication for those who simply have no income. Blankets have been given to help keep warm at night in winter. Mosquito nets have been given out too.

Materials and where necessary labour are provided for repairing houses, adding cyclone protection measures and building new houses where homes have been destroyed. Innovative and environmentally friendly approaches to construction are being investigated, such as using waste plastic bottles as building material.

Education and training, and earning a living
In addition, the project is able to make grants for school fees and uniforms, and for training and apprenticeships. These often cost less than £50 each but give the beneficiary a future.
Small start-up business loans are made to pay for initial stock or in one case to buy a small cart to transport goods. Again these loans are often less than £50, and the recipients pay back as they can so that funds can be used for future loans.
Environmental projects that help the community
The team have worked with a local potter to design and manufacture efficient cooking stoves which not only save the user money by needing less charcoal, but also reduce CO2 emissions. These cost under £3 each and are sold to those who can afford them or given freely to those who cannot.

Some tree planting has been carried out, with a first batch of fifty five trees being planted costing a little over £1 each. The local team are engaging pastors to encourage their members to plant trees.

Charitable spend overview
As we can see from the description above, some project activities are ongoing (Subsistence support: food provision and medical expenses) and others are ‘development’ (Improved housing, water and sanitation, training courses and education, environmental).

As the description and chart above show, activities that are funded are for the public benefit. The charity is run by volunteers and there are not charitable expenses in UK. The item labelled ‘wages and transport’ are the proportion allocated by our partner organisation in Beira, Associacao Esperanca Aos Vulneravies.
Structure, Governance and Management
The charity’s governing document is a deed of trust. It is a charitable trust.
Trustees must be appointed by a resolution of the trustees passed at a special. In selecting individuals for appointment as trustees, the trustees have regard to the skills, knowledge and experience needed for the effective administration of the charity.

I report in respect of my examination of the Trusf s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying OLrt my examination, I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act. Independent I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have examlner's statement come to my attention in connection with the examination which gives me cause to believe that in, any material respect.. the accounting records were not kept in accorfance with 5ec*ion 130 ofthe Charities Act., or the accounts did not accord with the ac£ounting records; or the a(wunts did not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the fom and content of aca)unts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the attounts give a 'true and fairf view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.
