The objectives of the CIO are:

  1. to further or benefit the residents of Lindale and Newtonin-Cartmel and the neighbourhood, without distinctions of sex, sexual orientation, race or of political, religious or other opinions by associating together the said residents and the local authorities, voluntary and other organisations in a common effort to advance educations and to provide facilities in the interest of social welfare for recreation and leisure time occupation with the objective of improving the conditions of life for the residents.

Summary of the objects of the charity set out in its governing document

  1. to benefit the public, to advance education in particular to advance learning and knowledge of the heritage of the Cartmel peninsula (in particular but not exclusively its industrial and social history), and to promote learning and knowledge of the buildings of historic merit in Lindale (in particular but not exclusively by the preservation of St Paul Lindale the former parish Church of Lindale). In furtherance of these objectives but not otherwise, the Trustees shall have power to establish or secure the establishment of a community centre and to maintain or manage or cooperate with any statutory authority in the maintenance and management of such a centre for activates promoted by the Charity in furtherance of the above objectives.

The team of trustees met regularly and hosted initial fundraising activity before Covid 19 halted further planned events. We have had success with four small grant applications (Cumbria County Council, South Lakeland District Council, Sport England and Hadfield Trust) and a great first local crowdfunding event. The Summary of the main Hadfrield Trust grant is dependent on the lease of the church activities undertaken for building. the public benefit in relation to these objects We have referred to the guidance contained in the Charity (include within this Commission’s general guidance on public benefit when section the statutory reviewing our aims and objectives and in planning our future declaration that trustees activities. have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit)

Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year

We have undertaken a detailed damp and decay survey with Hutton and Rostron Surveyors to understand the condition of the building and the scope of all necessary repairs. Their report is available for review on the website.

Our local architect, Mike Darwell of John Coward Associates of Cartmel has completed the first draft of our design concept plans for the building.

We continue to liaise with the Carlisle Diocese regarding the details of the lease and responsibility for repairs. The draft scheme for the project went to public consultation and was approved by the Church Commissioners
