Tori O'Callaghan CEO

Tori joined Springfield in September 2022, bringing over 18 years of experience supporting and empowering society’s most vulnerable. With extensive experience in the VAWG sector, she has managed a wide range of domestic abuse services across Greater Manchester, including IDVA provision, community outreach, and refuges. Since joining Springfield, Tori has successfully guided the charity through significant growth and change.

Clare Feeney-Johnson Community Services Manager

Clare has been our Community Services manager, managing the Community Support Team based in Stricklandgate House, since 2022. Clare is Safelives IDVA manager trained, providing specialist support to victims and survivors of domestic abuse. The community team’s work focuses on helping individuals understand their experiences, begin their recovery journeys, rebuild confidence, and establish healthy personal boundaries. Clare and her team support survivors to recover from trauma, be empowered to seek help and guidance when needed, and make informed choices in future relationships, including the use of Clare’s Law. Their overall aim is to enable survivors to move forward with increased safety, resilience, and self-awareness.

Kelly Jackson Refuge Manager

Kelly is our Refuge Manager, who has been with Springfield for almost 4 years. Kelly is a trained IDVA and supports all the survivors at refuge with her empathy, experience and knowledge. Kelly is a wonderful addition to the Springfield team and is committed to the growth and development of the charity and invaluable service Springfield provides.

Christmas Party

Christmas 2024 we hosted an amazing children’s party on 23rd December. Father Christmas arrived in his sleigh, Magic Mark entertained the children with his magic tricks and there was a doughnut stand giving away free hot sugary doughnuts! We need to thank Kendal and District Lions, Kendal Town Council, Suzanne and Trevor and their wedding guests for their generous donations – all of whom helped us to give the families a lovely morning.

The Financial Year April 2024 to March 2025 was one of continued growth in the activites of our now medium size Charity. Stricklandgate House continues to be our centre for Community Activities and general administrative support.

It is clear that we are having a major impact on the lives of the increasing number of clients who we serve.

Staff Development continues to be a major feature of our commitment to continual improvement, this is of a very specific focused and often accredited nature, but also by the informal shadowing and sharing of best practice among the team. Trustees see the development and welfare of our fantastic staff team as being fundamental to our success and we have made every effort to review and improve our conditions of serve for our employees.

Trustees met on 5 occasions over the year and the Chair and Vice Chair met regularly with the Senior Staff Team. In addition, Staff and Trustees had a very productive Strategy Day facilitated by a consultant to help finalise our review of our Mission, Values, Aims and Objectives. As a result, we were able to publish our Strategic Plan for the next 5 years.

The Leadership Team and Trustees were ably supported by our expert accountant who also attended Trustee meetings and engaged in our decisionmaking process. We are grateful for her excellent support, advice and challenge. During the year we added a third premises to our portfolio by renting, from a very generous local Trust a ‘Move on House’ to allow transition from the Refuge to private accommodation. Samworth House our first male accommodation as we anticipated has been extremely well used and appreciated by quite a number of clients. Last year we welcomed our first baby into the Women’s Refuge, since then we have had many other children of all ages in our care. Considerable improvements have also been made at the Refuge including electrical upgrading, decorating and new carpeting and other flooring. The Friends of Springfield headed up by our Vice Chair, Sue Tomlison has had another good year reaching further out into the communities of Kendal and well beyond. The end of this financial year allowed us to start or celebrations of our 110th anniversary which finds the Charity in a very strong financial position thanks to the generous support of supporters, funders and statutory authorities. Friends of Springfield Review

The Friends of Springfield (FOS) have continued to help Springfield with emergency accommodation and taxi fares. We have had some very generous donations of furniture and kitchen ware which have helped our residents who are moving on to their own homes. FoS also contributed to the Christmas Party where the children from the Community and Refuge with their mothers enjoyed a magician and a visit to see Santa on his Sleigh (in Stricklandgate House) and receive a present, the look on the children’s faces when they saw Santa was magical. FoS continue to buy small birthday and Christmas presents for all clients and residents. This year they also paid for the Christmas lunch at the Refuge and Samworth

House.

All this has been made possible by the generosity of donations throughout the year by FoS which makes such a significant difference to the running of the Charity. The Trustees are extremely grateful for the FoS for all their

support.

Financial Review

During the financial year of 2025 as noted above it was a year of growth and continuation of the charity work and delivery of services which was only possible due to the grants received and because of the continued hard work put in by our CEO, staff members and the trustees.

We are extremely grateful for all donations and support we have received from many local and national organisations as well as all the extra help provided by staff, volunteers and individuals. Income for the year exceeded £500k which is an amazing achievement. Income was higher than the previous financial year, due to an increase in the housing benefit, helped by Samworth House starting to take clients and the refuge being at full capacity for the majority of the year. The DASA contract with Westmorland and Furness Council also doubled compared to the previous year. Voluntary income was also higher which included a legacy and also some very generous donations from individuals and companies. Expenditure also increased compared to the previous financial year. The is predominantly due to staff salaries as staff numbers have increased, there were also some unforeseen refurbishment/maintenance costs at the refuge and inevitably an increase in staff and property overheads.

Springfield Domestic Abuse Support in South Lakeland has ended the financial year to 31 March 2025 with a cash asset of £104k. The cash funds are made up of an Unrestricted balance of £84k and Restricted balance of £20k.

A Word From Our CEO

2024–2025 has been another incredible year for Springfield.

Samworth House, our new male safe accommodation, welcomed its first residents in September 2024. Each of these men shared that, before coming to Springfield, they had not received the understanding or support they needed from other services, friends, or family. Many told us we were the first organisation that truly listened to them and believed their experiences. This reinforces just how vital this provision is.

Our community service has continued to grow, supporting an increasing number of people across our area. We also delivered a record number of awareness sessions to community groups, businesses, and partner organisations, helping to strengthen understanding and prevention efforts throughout the community.

Our refuge occupancy remained high at 95%, providing safe accommodation for 22 women and 10 children this year. The average stay was 152 days, reflecting the depth of support, safety, and stability we strive to offer.

This year we also received development support from the Lloyds Foundation, which enabled us to review our values, vision, and mission with the guidance of Alan Chapman. This process provided a valuable opportunity for us to come together and reassess the future direction of our charity.

As always, I am extremely proud of the entire Springfield team and the compassion, dedication, and professionalism they bring to our work every day. We are especially grateful to our supportive and passionate trustee board, who nurture not only the charity but our staff as well.

Finally, I would like to thank our supporters, funders, and partners for their continued commitment. Your dedication ensures Springfield can continue to provide life-changing support to survivors of domestic abuse.

Our Impact

252 people were referred into Springfield services in 2024-2025 - Referrals came from:

We provided one-off advice and support on 189 occasions to survivors and/or partner agencies, in addition to the clients we had open to us.

22 women and 10 children supported at refuge during 20242025; average stay: 152 days.

Our Impact

Samworth House received 18 referrals this year. While capacity limitations meant we could not accommodate 13 of these referrals, all were supported to access alternative safe accommodation. The average resident stay was 120 days.

A total of 72 women were referred to our refuge this year. Due to capacity constraints, we were unable to accommodate 59 of these referrals; however, all were assisted in securing alternative safe accommodation.
