THE CHERYL KING TRUST
Trustees Report
The Cheryl King Trust's alm is that no young person In Surrey should be prevented from
learning a musical instrument because their parents or guardians cannot afford It, or
through a lack of inspiration. This is achieved by providin8 bursaries for instrument or
singing lessons and grants for performance5 that inspire youn8 people to take up music
lessons.
The Charlty Is named after Cheryl Klng who played alto sax and piano and was a wonderful
musician and a very gifted and popular music teacher. She tragically passed away just
before Christmas 2014. The Trust was set up in her memory to provide financlal asslstance
for musical education for children and youn8 people.
The current focus of the trust is to provide fvnding or ctrfunding to enable chlldren and
youn8 people a8ed 18 and under to start or contlnue with indlvidual or group muslcal
instrument or singlng lessons who may not otherwise be able to do so.
It has been a very difficult year dueto the COVID pandemic which caused the cancellatlon of
most face-to-face lessons. Although many were able to revert to onllne Instructlon, for
some this was not Possible. In the period from 2 October 2020 up to 30 September 2021,
the trust has undertaken the following diarltable actlvtties:
During the year, the Trust had commitments to fund 22 youn8 people in association
with 5urrey Arts. 19 students were able to receNe Instruttion, amountln8 to a total
of £3,500 of support.
The Awards for Youn8 Muslclans {AYMI "Cheryl King Award": AYM have been
runnin8 their annual Awards pro8ramme for 18 years and to date have given Awards
to more than I,(X)O exceptlonal youn8 muslclans, many of whom have 8one on to
prestlglous music colleges and become professional musicians. Each year those In
need of financial support t¢)wards the next step In thelr muslcal pro8ression can
apply for the award and as well as provldlng financial assistance, AYM supports
Award winners by provldln8 advice, 8uidance and access to a range of music-makin&
mentorlng and performance opportunities throughout the Award year. We are
deli8hted to have supported two students with the AYM Cheryl King Award.
Support for the Future Talent Fled8llng Programme: Future Talent supports gifted
youn8 musicians up to age 18 from challen8in8 back8rounds who need 8uidance to
enable them to flourlsh on thelr musical journey. The Trust supported a bursary
towards the Fledglin8 Pro8rammin8for younger muslcians.
The trust had co-funded wlth Surrey Arts a visit from the National Youth Jazz
Orchestra to provide inspirational performances and workshop5 for local state
schoo15 in March. In the event the wstt had to be postponed because of the COVID
pandemic but It thls has now been rescheduled forjanuary and February 2022.
Future
The Trustees fomied the Cheryl King Trust lout of the former, unregistered Cheryl King
(Hlrstl Trust) In order to increase the number of chlldren and young people that could
benefit, knowing that the resource5 provided by the state are In decline. We belleve many

children in Surrey are unable to experience the joy of making music because of financial
disadvantage.
We all know the joy that listening to and making music brings to us. It's Particularly
Important for young people. Muslc tultlon from a young age Improves literacy. problem-
solving skills. confidence, resilience and creativty. Music is even more important given the
pressures all young people face today.
To this end we are increasing our fundraising activity and extending our partnerships so that
more children and young people can experience the life changing impact of music in their
lives.
We are delighted to be working with the National Youth Jazi Orchestra and Surrey Arts,
delivering some inspirational events at several Surrey Schools in early 2022. We are also
planning to double our 5pendinE in the coming year.
Reserves
The Trustees recognise their responsibility to retain sufficient reserves to ensure our
beneficiaries do not experience a sudden break in their funding. To thi5 end, the Trustees
plan to maintain a reserve equivalent to one yearfs funding commitments.
