Laws applicable to charities in England and Wales require the Trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year which give a true and fair view of the Charity’s financial activities during the year and of its position at the end of the year. In preparing those financial statements, the Trustees are required to:

- select suitable accounting policies and apply them consistently;

- make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent;

- prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume that the charity will continue in operation

The Trustees are responsible for keeping proper accounting records which disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the charity which enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with the Charities Act 2011. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charity and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities.

## **Review of the past year**

Since being granted its Charter in 1980 the Lions Club of Woodley & Earley has continued to support the needy, both within our community and globally under the umbrella of Lions International.

As we return to normal this year, following the Global Pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2, so our fund-raising and social events have been reinstated. Our ever-popular Firework event in November remains our biggest fundraiser. Although income was down after last year’s record return following 2 years of postponements, we still managed to generate £21,430 after expenses (£32,703 in 2021) enabling us to make sizable grants to the Laurel Park Charitable Foundation, Thames Vale Vultures and the Air Cadets without whose help, and the many friends of Lions who participated, the event could not take place.

We were able to collect door to door again last year during our December visits to homes in Woodley and Earley with the Santa sleigh, including our numerous static appearances. We generated a record sum of £7,348 after expenses in 2022 (£4,668 in 2021) which was shared equally between the Woodley and Earley Foodbanks. Our thanks to Select Car Leasing who supplied the towing vehicle and allowed us to collect outside the Select Car Leasing Stadium (Reading FC) as part of their family fun day.

The return of our Annual Charter Night after a 2-year absence was a great success and was enjoyed by 72 guests, a very good turnout given the size of our club. Coupled with our popular “pub of the month”, a bowls night and walking tour of Reading, we are gradually increasing our social activities. The Club’s terms of reference state that a Business Meeting is held monthly to consider business and minutes from the sub committees, principally the community service team which researches requests for support from individuals and other organisations locally. Last year we distributed £29,844 to worthy causes (£11,503 in 2021).

We continue to support the Woodley Town Centre Partnership both at the Christmas Lights switch on with the Remembrance Tree of Light, while distributing mulled wine (sponsored by the club for the first time in 2022), mince pies and song sheets and at the Christmas Extravaganza. Our annual quiz was again postponed to 2023 although we did manage to take our human fruit machine to the Winnersh Fete and support the Laurel Park Fun Day where he held a recruitment drive. Although 9 expressions of interest were shown we failed to add to our membership which ended the year at an all-time low of just 11. However, on the plus side we have established a growing number of “Friends of Lions” and supporters.

This report and the financial statements were approved by the Trustees on .

**THE LIONS CLUB OF WOODLEY & EARLEY** Trustees’ Annual Report and unaudited financial statements for the year ended 31 December 2022

## **Independent Examiner’s Report to the Trustees of the Lions Club of Woodley & Earley**

I report on the accounts of the club for the year ended 31 December 2022, which are set out on pages 6 to 9.

## **Respective Responsibilities of the Trustees and Independent Examiner.**

As described on page 3, the Trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts, and you consider that the audit requirement of s144 of the Charities Act 2011 (the Act) does not apply. It is my responsibility to state, on the basis of procedures specified in the General Directions given by the Charity Commissioners under s145(5)(b) of the Act, whether particular matters have come to my attention.

## **Basis of Independent Examiner’s Report**

My examination was carried out in accordance with the General Directions given by the Charity Commissioners. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and the seeking of explanations from you of any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and, consequently, I do not express an audit opinion on the view given by the accounts.

## **Independent Examiner’s Statement**

In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention:

1. which gives me reasonable cause to believe that, in any material respect, the requirements:

   - to keep accounting records in accordance with s130 of the Act; and

   - to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and to comply with the accounting requirements of the Act

have not been met; or

2. to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
