VCOD Marching Band is run on a weekly basis by the Bandmaster, assisted by the musical director, senior instructors, including music tuition for members learning a new instrument. The band is governed by a management committee / trustees.

The management committee / trustees currently consist of 7 Trustees, some of which have a role on the committee, and all have connections to the band and the Bandmaster.

Our committee consists of Bandmaster, Secretary, Chairman, Vice Chairman, Treasurer, Musical Director, Safeguarding Officer, Quartermaster/Uniform and 3 sections Leads.

All management / trustees can be elected on an annual basis and are eligible for re-election. The Bandmaster to be elected on a tri annual bases and is eligible for re-election in 2024.

Objectives and Activities

At all times VCOD aim to maintain the highest possible standards of musical and visual presentation, to promote and enhance the public image of the band.

To enhance and develop the musical, education, enjoyment and other relevant skills of the members any age, by encouraging individuals to reach their full potential within the band.

We strive towards equal opportunities. No member, potential member or guest shall receive an unfair or less favourable treatment on the grounds of gender, race, colour, creed, nationality, ethnic origin, age, disability, religious beliefs and activity, appearance, political affiliation, and sexual orientation.

Conduct the finances of the band on a non-profit making basis, generating sufficient income from performances and members subscriptions, to meet operating costs of travel expenses and make provisions for future purchases, music, repair, and replacement of band instruments and equipment.

Achievements and Performance

2023 proved the growing popularity of our band, with another full year of performances, being invited to some new events, along with many traditional engagements that all members look forward to. The hard work of all members continued at weekly practices to ensure we were ready to perform to our full protentional, continually growing with some returning members and some new of all ages, which is fantastic to see.

The busy season began early May, with performing and volunteering all in one weekend. Ensuring to give back to the public by helping at a local Folk Fest with Car parking duties.

The summer season soon became upon us, sadly a few carnivals cancelled due to the typical British weather, but we had great opportunity in many events to show our musical talent, commitment and hard work. We were presented with 1[st] Place at Newport Carnival Spirit or the Carnival Awards and returning to Swanage and Shaftesbury Carnivals we were very honoured to win the Musicianship Cup, by the Shaftesbury Carnival Committee.

In October we were invited to Wellington Barracks, to join some of the Grenadier Guards, we were lucky to be able to watch the changing of the guard, participate in classroom workshops, marching practice along with listening to some of the Guards their stories and trying on some uniform, a fantastic opportunity for us all.

We continue to be members of The Royal British Legion and a privilege to offer our services with helping to sell poppies and memorabilia at our local Asda store on the run up to The Royal British Legion Remembrance Parade & Service, which we were as always very honoured to be part of, along with Armed Forces Day.

Rewarded from our hard work during the year we celebrated with a members fun day held at Corf Camp, kayaking, archery, fun, games, BBQ with family and friends joining in.

Our yearly presentation evening took place celebrating 31 years of Vectis Corps of Drums. All members along with their families celebrating our achievements and hard work. It was very well supported and well-deserved awards presented to members, along with a disco, and buffet.

Ending a very busy, successful year with a Christmas party.

Financial Review

2023 has been another successful year,

With performances and fund-raising events, Carnivals, local shows, Armed Forces Day, Remembrance Parade, fun day and presentation.

We had 3 mainland trips this year which we subsidised the cost of the ferries from the Isle of Wight, along with the Coach hire.

With the growing band, uniform, and instruments are a high priority, the purchase of new wind instruments - piccolo, clarinets and drums were in place.

We were lucky to win the Asda Green tokens event and receive £500. We received a donation of £937.61 from a local Cowes British Legion band who unfortunately ended.
